Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) said on Wednesday it would not hire temporary workers this holiday season for the second straight year but will offer extra hours to its existing employees.
Wal-Mart said it would increase the number of what it called “holiday helpers” in stores this season to enhance customer service by getting shoppers checked out faster, having more registers available and adding another layer of shopping support for customers in lines that may have forgotten items. The “holiday helpers” are part of its regular workforce, the company said.
Wal-Mart said the extra hours offered will help staff traditional roles such as cashiers and shelf stockers, and personal shoppers and new jobs like pick up associates for its online operations.

Thats going to be a hit. They usually hire around 100k seasonal workers.

Just another symptom of an economy that is NOT recovering as well (if at all) as some would have you believe.... right along with retail giants closing their doors. Normally, at least around Christmas time, there would be plenty of "new" jobs for folks. Three months short of a year and we still have few new job openings compared to pre-Obama/pre-Dem recession years.

This must mean Target will actually reduce the number of workers based upon the direction that company is heading.

An employee I know at my local Walmart Neighborhood Market told me that Walmart will stop honoring competitor ads at the end of this year. Has anyone else heard this ?
Last month our local Kroger stopped giving a senior discount.

Last month our local Kroger stopped giving a senior discount.
I don't have either store near me, but I noticed that my local supermarket chain is getting very stingy with its Fuelperks program. This chain has a virtual monopoly on supermarkets around where I live, so naturally, I'm in one of its stores frequently. Used to be I could earn $2 off a gallon of gas. Now I'm lucky if I get maybe 40 cents. And gasoline here is expensive.

Lots of grocery competition here in the Dallas area. But in spite of even more competitors like Aldi moving into this area, prices have increased while incentives to buy are cut.
I suspect Kroger's fuel rewards may be next in line to be cut.

Mrs. Liberty tells me Fry's (the local name for the Kroger chain) is still giving out the senior discount, as of two days ago.... :shrug:
Might be a regional decision?

Maybe their full time workers can actually work 40 hours over the holidays.
