Poll: 61 Percent Think Debt-Ceiling Raise Should Be Accompanied by Spending Cuts

While President Obama has insisted that he will not negotiate with Republicans in a looming fight over increasing the debt ceiling, a new Bloomberg poll finds that a strong majority of respondents disagree with that position. Sixty-one percent say that it is “right to require spending cuts when the debt ceiling is raised even if it risks default.” That view was shared by almost three-quarters of Republicans, two-thirds of independents, and a plurality of Democrats.

Respondents laid the blame for dysfunction in Washington equally on Democrats  and Republicans, with 40 percent faulting the GOP and 38 percent blaming Obama and his congressional allies. That’s a nine-percentage point increase in those blaming the president and congressional Democrats since February.

The poll also found that nearly two-thirds would rather see sequester cuts replaced with targeted spending cuts.
