The White House announced, early Wednesday, that the afternoon’s press briefing would be held off-camera. When Press Secretary Sean Spicer took the podium, it became clear why.
It was because, had the briefing been on camera, he would have actually had to say the following words with a straight face:
“The President and a small group of people knew exactly what he meant.”
That line from Spicer was in reference to the Tweet heard ’round the world — the now-deleted dispatch from late Tuesday night in which President Donald Trump wrote, “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.”

IT'A A RUSSIAN CODE!!!! OPEN YOUR EYES, SHEEPLE!!!!
Poor Spicey.
-
To this day, I don't know what Trump was thinking when he picked this guy.
It would have been so easy to laugh and make a joke about it. Instead Spicer had to come up with a clumsy lie, making him look like the junpy, humorless stiff that he is.

At least pretend to be in on the joke or something.
When I was watching the baseball game between the Twins and the Tigers last night there was a spectator holding up a sign that said "Covfefe the Tigers".

You'd be humorless too if you had to put up with people like you every day....lol. Tough job but somebody has to do it. Nobody wants to.

Yeah, That was awkward, and weird. He could have just said, "Come on guys, is that really what you want to talk about? Do you really have time to obsess over a misprint?"
Instead, he tried to turn it into some kind of "secret code" - oooooh. Very juvenile.
-

It wasn't a misprint. It was a typo. Everyone makes them. The difference is... when Trump makes one it's BREAKING NEUZ!!!! *****rollingeyes*****
-

@XenaLee
Yeah, you're right, I'm going to call things as I see them, objectively and without a tribalistic filter, and some people don't like that. I won't stop, though. I'd do the same with a President Cruz.
Press secretary is a tough job, and it takes a person suited to it. From the beginning I didn't think Spicer was that type. He always looks like he's clenching his fists under the podium...just so tense. A person who could lighten up and take it in stride--- control the room instead of being controlled--- would be a big improvement, imo.

@240B
Yeah, awkward is a good way to describe his response. I just don't think Spicer has the instinct to handle this kind of thing smoothly.
-

@XenaLee
Are you sure it was a typo, though?
Don't you find it odd that this happened right after Trump touched the Great Orb?
-

I try to put myself in others' shoes before I criticize them though. Not doing so might even be considered by some to be critiquing with a tribalistic bias.... perhaps without even realizing it.
Bottom line.... I observed Spicer early on ... and he did seem to have a sense of humor. I liked him. But... the past four months would make anyone lose their "humor". I can't say I blame him for being "clenched up" these days.
-

LOL! Oh, I think it was a hilarious typo of mega proportions. It was great fun. It may not be the only late nite/early am typo Trump has ever made.... but it definitely got 'the' most attention.... so far.
-
@240B
Yeah, awkward is a good way to describe his response. I just don't think Spicer has the instinct to handle this kind of thing smoothly.
@CatherineofAragon
There are a dozen people waiting in the wings who could do a better job than Spicer. Trump probably knows this, but his famous 'loyalty' will not allow him to do what needs to be done. I suspect that over the next few months, we will see a change. Spicer himself looks like he is ready to move on to something else. Everybody says that Spicer is a 'Great Guy'. That may be true, but he is in the wrong job for his personality and skill set.
-

@XenaLee
But he's supposed to be a professional, chosen for a very specific, high-stress position. That's what I'm saying---if he's reacting like that after four months, he's not the guy for the job.
-
The reason why Spicer cannot laugh it off is Trump. Trump does not want his communications people to admit any mistakes or missteps, and to attack anyone who disparages the POTUS in any way. Why else would he be shaking up the staff and bringing in people like Lewandowski? Had Spicer made a joke of "covfefe" he would likely have been dressed down by the Commander in Chief. Plain and simple. And, yes, his is a job no one qualified seems to want.

@240B
Exactly! He may be a great person, just not the best pick for that position.

Hmm. Then you don't believe Trump will replace him?

Who is? Look at the turnover rate for that job. I think you would have to be a cold, emotionless (shark?) kind of person to be "good at" that job. You know.... maybe an attorney could do it....lolol.
-
@CatherineofAragon
You gotta quit breathing fire, you're melting all the snowflakes.
-

He will. I don't think Trump is happy with Spicer in spite of Spicer's efforts to please him.

Well, that particular swamp is filled with them, lol. But I don't think Spicer was the sole individual who would take it. If the turnover is high, it's high...might as well fill the spot with picks who can handle it well.
-
@CatherineofAragon

@Cripplecreek
Lol. ****slapping
-
Didn't Trump come back and make a joke about his typo? Something about "figure it out, have fun"?
-
@240B
Exactly! He may be a great person, just not the best pick for that position.
@CatherineofAragon
Who is? It wouldn't matter who was in that position, the press and other detractors, would pick at anything to make Trump look bad. If they can't find something they'll invent it.
This is a purposeful tactic by the Dems. Create so much chaos that it keeps Trump from hiring good people to fill the myriad of positions and prevents action on making policy changes.
-

@Sanguine
He did. "Who can know the meaning of covfefe? Enjoy!" I thought it was funny.
-
If Mr. Spicer expects people to believe that there is some secret meaning behind Trump's tweet, he must be drinking a particularly strong adult bevfefe.

Only those who have made contact with the orb can know the covfefe

@driftdiver
Like I said to Xena, I certainly don't think Spicer is the only possible man for the job. Of course the left is going to harass the person at that podium, but so what? That's even more reason to choose carefully, pick someone who can handle the room. Otherwise we're throwing up our hands and letting the left manipulate us into settling for mediocrity because, oh, well, we're victims.
Trump takes a large share of the blame for the chaos in his own administration. The other day I read that he's filled only a small percentage of the positions he needs to fill.

LMAO! I envision a whole new language evolving from this one. It will make Klingon passé!

See? It's no coincidence, lol.

@CatherineofAragon
OR we find a decently qualified person and stop playing the media's game. During the campaign Trump always attacked. He never defended anything he said or did. It was an extremely effective strategy.
He's been trying to pay defense the last couple months. He doesn't do it well. Since his overseas trip he's been more on the attack mode and it seems to be working better. This tweet is one example. Instead of admitting it was a mistake he makes a joke of it.

Less golfing. More firing & hiring (in that order).
-

IMHO I think our country would be far better off if the majority of our Govt went golfing every single day.

And a very good joke, at that. It did, in fact, keep the morons busy. At least for a while. Trump's version, no doubt, of Idiot's Delight.

Alas, Hillary Clinton attempts to capitalize on grande stupidity, taking her cool factor from -10 to -100.

I'm sure that is true. Put yourself in his shoes. You are holding our iPhone with very, very tiny hands. It is hard to reach all the numbers on the keypad. Sometimes those short little fingers miss the buttons. Instead of stopping to correct himself and proofread, he just hits send. It must be very frustrating and sad having dwarfish hands trying to use a 5" phone.
We should feel sorry for him.
Spicer is just trying to spare his feelings. I'm sure he is sensitive about it just like Obama and his Dumbo ears.
