Adams asks for photos of city job applicants in effort to increase diversity: report

By Allie Griffin
August 5, 2022

Mayor Eric Adams is collecting headshots of potential city workers in a thinly-veiled effort to increase diversity, according to a new report.

Adams has requested city agencies to provide photographs of potential hires to City Hall as candidates go through the interview process for city jobs ranging from assistant commissioner to departmental press secretary, Politico reported Thursday.

Several unnamed city officials told the outlet that the request is clearly an effort to hire more diverse staffers. However, Adams maintains that it will merely help him recognize his employees in the sprawling city workforce.

“Everyone knew what it was. There was no question. It was the first thing everybody said: ‘We’re going to start counting complexions now,’” one recently-departed City Hall employee told Politico.

The majority of the officials interviewed by the outlet — who requested anonymity to speak freely about the internal measure — said they supported a more diverse workforce but worried the practice is already causing the Adams administration to make hiring decisions with a greater emphasis on race and ethnicity than merit.

So, literally judging people on the basis of the color of their skin, and not on the content of their character.

The absolute inverse negative of Dr. King.

Meanwhile, blacks are actually overrepresented in NYC government, and that continues to become more and more lopsided:

Quote
In 2020, the majority of new hires to NYC government were people of color (71%) and women (55%).

Though the total City workforce is relatively diverse, the City has gaps in representation at the leadership level, particularly for Black and Latina/o/x employees.

New York City's government workforce is among the most diverse in the country. Women represent nearly half of the workforce, and almost 2 of every 3 employees are people of color.

OHN! IMO, interviews for state jobs should instead be in neutral locations, where gooberment people have no cameras, and with the interviewees behind a screen using a voice distortion device so the gooberment interviewers can neither see the interviewees skin color nor hear their accents! IOW, as blind as possible!

Make a person have to go full Rachel Dolezal in order to get hired these days.

But what about those light-skinned African-Americans that want to claim minority preference, like Whitey below, that could be discriminated against because of a skin pigment condition?

Yep.  I know at the plant level, we were never allowed to see candidates photos for employment screening.

HR was damned picky about that.

Report: NYC Mayor Eric Adams Requests Photos of City Job Applicants to Ensure Diversity

Hannah Bleau 5 Aug 2022

New York City’s Democrat Mayor Eric Adams is reportedly requesting photos of city job applicants, as he wants to ensure that new members of the workforce are diverse — a move that seems to show the value of race and ethnicity over qualifications.

According to a report from Politico, most of the individuals — past and current city officials —  the outlet spoke to are unsettled by the mayor’s request, although it seems the mayor’s office is presenting the request as a way Adams can simply “begin to recognize folks [sic] faces.”

“Flagging that the Mayor would love all agencies upper leadership in this type of style,” an April 19 email from an Adams staffer reads. “Clarifying also that the avatars in the attached should be actual photos as the Mayor likes to begin to recognize folks [sic] faces.”

However, many remain skeptical and view the request as a way for Adams to prioritize racial and ethnic diversity. One former employee suggested everyone knew what the request was really about at its core.

“It was the first thing everybody said: ‘We’re going to start counting complexions now,’” the individual said.

Nevertheless, it appears the mayor’s office is walking the line, contending that the request for photos is simply to make it easier to recognize the faces of workers, although Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Adams, said the administration seeks to build a team “that reflects the city they serve and the administration they represent.”

“City Hall reviews the resume of all final candidates for senior level positions at agencies to ensure the mayor and we at City Hall know who is point on projects when working with them,” Levy said in a statement to Politico.

“The Adams administration is hiring the best people for the best jobs in the best city in the world. And we are committed to building a team that reflects the city they serve and the administration they represent,” he said, seemingly admitting that diversity is front and center.

However, he then claimed that “every hire is judged on their qualifications and whether they will be able to deliver for New Yorkers day after day.”

The move follows news of officials at New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene stating that “structural racism and the resulting social and economic inequities increase the risk of heat stress for Black New Yorkers” in its warning about this week’s heat wave in the Big Apple.

Diversity is about more than skin color, it include religion, sex orientation and disabilities, which are all illegal to ask.   :silly:
