A drug sniffing dog indicated narcotics in luggage, and when the bag was X-rayed, “so-called ‘vapes'” were discovered “with a specific order,” according to Interfax, which cited the Russian Federal Customs Service.

In the eyes of the Biden coup, that makes her worth saving. No telling how big of a ransom the US will end up paying to get her back. It surpass the one for Bowe Bergdahl.

Maybe if they got every WNBA fan to pony up a buck they could probably get about $200 to ransom her back. But I would bet if they just wait long enough Russia might pay the US to take her back.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said she will be 'demanding' for the release of Griner
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said on Saturday afternoon during a press conference that she will be "demanding" for the release of WNBA player.
"I will be demanding her release. I just spoke to the State Department to try to get them to focus on her circumstances," Lee said. "Putin has disregarded sovereign nations his entire service in this world. And anyone that is killing and attacking and destroying Ukraine, their neighboring country that is not involved in them has no right to hold Ms. Griner. Period."
Lee said that any legal disputes should be dealt with diplomatically, and said that Griner should be released.
Griner is from Houston, which Lee represents.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee demands Russia release Brittney Griner: ‘No right’
By Andrew Mark Miller, Fox News
March 6, 2022
Texas Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is demanding the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner who was detained by authorities in Russia for allegedly possessing a vape with cannabis oil.
“We know that there were some issues dealing with vape cartridges and other items but let me be very clear,” Lee, who represents Griner’s hometown of Houston, Texas, in Congress, said on Saturday. “Brittney Griner is a United States citizen, she was a guest in Russia…and I will be demanding her release.”
Lee added that she has spoken with the State Department to “try and get them to focus on her circumstances.”
“I don’t want to disregard a sovereign nation but Putin has disregarded sovereign nations his entire service in this world,” Lee said. “Anyone that is killing and attacking and destroying Ukraine, a neighboring country that is not bothering them, has no right to hold Ms. Griner. Period.”

Fears Putin will use WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner, 31, as a 'high-profile hostage' after she was detained on arrival at Moscow airport three WEEKS ago with 'cannabis-filled vape pen': Faces 10 YEARS in jail
Brittney Griner, 31, who plays in the WNBA for the Phoenix Mercury was arrested last month in Russia and charged with drug smuggling
A drug-sniffing dog was drawn to her luggage at the Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow
Russian customs officials inspected the bag and found vape cartridges
She was charge with smuggling a 'significant amount' of drugs, a crime carrying a penalty of five to ten years
Griner remains in custody and the team said they are 'monitoring the situation'
The arrest comes as Russia is increasingly cut off from the rest of the world due to the country's invasion of Ukraine

American women's basketball great Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for at least three weeks after the two-time Olympic gold medal winner and seven time WNBA All-Star was arrested at a Moscow airport for allegedly having a vape pen filled with hash oil.
Griner, 31, was detained last month while flying in to play for her Russian basketball team during the WNBA offseason, but there has been no confirmed date of when she was arrested. Her last communication was on February 5 when she posted a photo to Instagram of her and her Phoenix Mercury teammates.
Now Russia might use Griner as leverage as she faces up to 10 years in prison on the drug smuggling charge.
'If we want her out of jail, Russia is going to have some terms,' Former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia and Ukraine Evelyn Farkas told Yahoo Sports. 'It could be a prisoner swap. They also could use it as an implicit threat or blackmail to get us to do something or not do something. Either way, they find it useful.'
In a statement to DailyMail.com on Saturday, Griner's agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas did not dispute reports of her client's detention.

“We know that there were some issues dealing with vape cartridges and other items but let me be very clear,”
Silly rabbit, when some one, whether a American or other enters Russia and are found to be carrying vape vials containing hashish oil in their luggage they are considered a drug smuggler not a tourist. That's a concept even someone as simpleminded and ignorant Ms. Lee should be able to grasp, also I really don't see Russia being overly eager to play nice considering the current situations.
Perhaps Lee should have ended her demand to the Russians with this classic quote of hers:
“I am a queen, and I demand to be treated like a queen.”

Is she really all that high profile? I suspect most Americans barely know the WNBA exists, let alone can name a handful of players. Bottom line is that all airports are on the lookout for illegal drugs. She should have known better.

Russian Authorities Release First Photo of WNBA Player Brittney Griner Since Arrest

Warner Todd Huston 8 Mar 2022
Russian authorities have released the first photo of WNBA star Brittney Griner since her arrest three weeks ago in a Russian airport.
The photo shows the 31-year-old Phoenix Mercury player standing with her back to a wall and holding up what looks to be a piece of paper with her name written on it, according to the New York Post.
The photo was taken after Griner was detained in Moscow, supposedly on drug charges, for having vaping cartridges that authorities said contained cannabis oils in her luggage. Russian authorities had also refused to say precisely when Griner was arrested, but she has been out of touch with her family and friends for three weeks.
Griner was in Russia to play with the Russian women’s basketball team UMMC Ekaterinburg.

Russia to Detain WNBA Star Brittney Griner Two More Months
Dylan Gwinn 17 Mar 2022
A Russian court has decided to extend WNBA star Brittney Griner’s detention in Moscow for two more months, according to a report.
Griner, a Houston-native who plays for the WNBA’s Pheonix Mercury in addition to playing in Russia when the WNBA is not in season, has been held in a Russian jail since last month after being arrested for having vaping cartridges that contained cannabis oils.
The cartridges were detected in her luggage during an airport security check as she was preparing to leave the country.
TASS, the Russian news agency, reported that a judge had extended Griner’s detention to at least May 19.
“The court granted the petition of the investigation and extended the term of detention of U.S. citizen Griner,” the court ruled.

State Department: WNBA Star Brittney Griner in ‘Good Condition’ in Russian Jail
23 Mar 2022
The U.S. State Department said Wednesday that a U.S. Embassy official has visited with WNBA star Brittney Griner, who remains detained near Moscow, to check on her condition.
State Department spokesperson Ned Price told CNN the official found Griner “to be in good condition.” Price did not identify the official who had been granted consular access to Griner, something the United States had been demanding.
Griner was detained after arriving at a Moscow airport, reportedly in mid-February, after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges that allegedly contained oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Russian state news agency Tass reported last week that a court had extended Griner’s pretrial detention to May 19.
Price says the U.S. “will do everything we can to see that she is treated fairly throughout this ordeal.” Griner’s legal ordeal comes amid tension between Russia and the U.S. over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
A member of a Russian state-backed prison monitoring group visited with Griner last week at the pretrial detention facility outside Moscow where she’s being held and said the Phoenix Mercury star was faring well behind bars.

Brittney Griner arrest in Russia: State Department says WNBA star 'doing as well as can be expected'
Fox News Digital obtained State Department's response to Reps. Donalds and Owens' March letter
By Ryan Gaydos | Fox News
The State Department on Thursday responded to a letter from Reps. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., and Burgess Owens, R-Utah, calling on the Biden administration to send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, letting him know Americans will not be made political pawns in the midst of the country’s war on Ukraine.
The letter on March 10, which Fox News Digital obtained exclusively, expressed concerns about Brittney Griner’s detention in the country. Griner was arrested in February after Russian officials said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis.
Griner could face up to a decade in prison if she’s convicted.

WNBA star Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia has been extended by another couple of weeks, according to new reports.
The 18-day extension of Griner's detention, which began in February, came at the "request of the investigation," as Russian authorities accuse her of smuggling vape cartridges containing a cannabis oil known as hashish oil, which is illegal to possess in Russia, into the country, per Russian state outlet TASS. She will now be released on July 2 instead of her scheduled date of June 18, Russian officials said. ...

“At this point, it’s starting to feel like a no,” she said.
Griner is facing up to 10 years in prison.
“I find it unacceptable, and I have zero trust in our government right now. If I can’t trust you to catch a Saturday call outside of business hours, how can I trust you to actually be negotiating on my wife’s behalf to come home? Because that’s a much bigger ask than to catch a Saturday call,” Cherelle added. ...

Brittney Griner appears in Russian courtroom, criminal trial date set
Brittney Griner has been held in Russia since February
By Ryan Gaydos | Fox News
Brittney Griner made a public appearance in a Russian courtroom Monday as officials set a date for her trial months after she was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs through a Moscow airport.
The criminal trial was set for July 1, and the WNBA star was ordered to remain in custody for the duration of her criminal trial. The court in the Moscow suburb of Khimki extended her detention for another six months. She could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Griner was seen being led into court with handcuffs. The 6-foot-9 Phoenix Mercury center was wearing glasses and a gray T-shirt as she received word about the trial date.
Griner was arrested at Sheremetyevo Airport in February after she was accused of bringing in vape cartridges containing oils derived from cannabis through security. Her arrest came a week before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine but news of her detention did not make it out until March.
U.S. officials and the WNBA kept a low profile when it came to speaking out about Griner’s arrest. It was not until the State Department reclassified Griner as being "wrongfully detained" that her fellow basketball stars started to ramp up the pressure to get her released.

Brittney Griner Trial Date Set For July 1
by Bill Graff
June 27, 2022
Brittney Griner appeared in court in the Moscow suburb of Khimki today. Her trial date for alleged cannabis possession will begin on July 1st, and she has been ordered to remain in custody for the duration of the trial.
Griner could face up to 10 years in Russian prison if convicted on the charges of large-scale transportation of drugs. The AP reported that fewer than 1% of criminal defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted.
In May, the State Department reclassified Griner’s case as wrongfully detained which shifted her case to its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs. That effectively is the United States governments chief negotiator.
This sets the stage for a potential prisoner swap with the Russians, similar to the one in April that brought home Marine veteran Trevor Reid in exchange for a Russian pilot. Russian news media continue to raise the possibility of a deal including Russian Arms dealer Viktor Blount. Blount is currently serving a 25-year sentence for conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing air to terrorists.
That trade would seem to be lopsided, with Griner charged for carrying a vape pen with cannabis residue. The U.S. could include Paul Whelan in the deal for Blount. He is a former Marine and security director who is serving a 16-year sentence on espionage.

Biden reassures Brittney Griner's wife US is working to secure her release from Russia 'as soon as possible'
Brittney Griner's trial in Russia continues Thursday
By Ryan Gaydos | Fox News
Brittney Griner’s wife finally received a call from President Joe Biden on Wednesday to talk about getting the WNBA superstar out of Russia, where she has been detained since February.
Cherelle Griner and Biden spoke about the Phoenix Mercury player, the White House said in a release. Biden reassured Cherelle that the U.S. is "working to security Brittney’s release as soon as possible."
"President Biden, joined by Vice President Harris, spoke today with Cherelle Griner, the wife of Brittney Griner who is wrongfully detained in Russia under intolerable circumstances," a White House readout of the call said. "The President called Cherelle to reassure her that he is working to secure Brittney’s release as soon as possible, as well as the release of Paul Whelan and other U.S. nationals who are wrongfully detained or held hostage in Russia and around the world. He also read her a draft of the letter the President is sending to Brittney today.
"The President offered his support to Cherelle and Brittney’s family, and he committed to ensuring they are provided with all possible assistance while his administration pursues every avenue to bring Brittney home. Today’s call follows calls that National Security Advisor Sullivan and Secretary of State Blinken have had with Cherelle in recent weeks and this past weekend. The President directed his national security team to remain in regular contact with Cherelle and Brittney’s family, and with other families of Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad, to keep them updated on efforts to secure the release of their loved ones as quickly as possible."

Boo hoo. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. I understand she also claimed her father is a Vietnam veteran and it was so hard for her not to celebrate July 4. Really? She either walks out or kneels for the national anthem, but she's just oh-so-patriotic she celebrates Independence Day religiously.
Cry me a river.

Although I understand this "wife's" frustration....she needs to understand that this a foreign country that we have no jurisdiction over. Or is she just a goofball? (rhetorical)
Myself, I think she'll be used as a trade for some Russian imprisoned in the US. And she needs to be praying for that.
And thinking on that a little more...it's kinda like sports.
-
I can sympathize with any American who is incarcerated in a foreign country. However, she stood a much greater chance at being freed with Trump in office than she does with the current incompetent circus act (that she voted for). At least now she has the time to reflect on her election choice.
Leadership actually matters when it comes to a national leader. Sadly, she couldn't figure that one out for herself.

Brittney Griner had doctor’s recommendation for medical cannabis in U.S.
Griner faces 10 years in prison if convicted
By Joe Morgan | Fox News
Brittney Griner was back in a Russian courtroom on Friday and a lawyer for the WNBA star presented a doctor's note recommending the use of medical cannabis in order to treat pain.
Griner, who pleaded guilty to drug charges last Thursday, has been held in Russia since February after Russian authorities say they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. The guilty plea does not bring an end to the trial.

"The attending physician gave Brittney recommendations for the use of medical cannabis. The permission was issued on behalf of the Arizona Department of Health," lawyer Maria Blagovolina said.
Griner’s lawyers also presented evidence that Griner had undergone anti-doping tests, which did not return any positive results.
In recent weeks, there has been mounting pressure on the Biden administration to bring the two-time Olympic gold medalist home, with news coming to light that Griner penned a letter to President Biden asking for his help in obtaining her release from a Russian prison and her safe return to the States.

Was that doctor's note by any chance found in a ballot drop box at 3am? Just wondering, since this is the first I've heard of it.

It's a cannabis miracle!

Is she really all that high profile? I suspect most Americans barely know the WNBA exists, let alone can name a handful of players. Bottom line is that all airports are on the lookout for illegal drugs. She should have known better.
She has ben playing for the Russian team for a number of years. She knows the rules.

THIS JUST IN: Griner still in custody. BBC (https://www.bbc.com/sport/basketball/61623646) weighs in.Players say the Phoenix Mercury centre has been wrongfully detained and are calling on President Joe Biden to help.
Well there's your problem. If Trump was in office, she would have been home in a wee, or two at the very most. LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill are here instead of serving 10 years in China for shoplifting due to Trump's intervention. Of course Ball's ungrateful father said Trump had nothing to do with it.
