Title: New York county confirms case of polio

Nah, I was thinking maybe all the ILLEGALS coming across from everywhere may just have something to do with it.  But I'm sure that they are being very cautious at the border and making sure ILLEGALS have had all their childhood preventative vaccines.  *****rollingeyes*****

New York county confirms case of polio

The New York Department of Health on Thursday reported a case of polio in a resident of the state's Rockland County.

This case marks the first in the U.S. in nearly a decade.

The department said it was identified through sequencing at the Wadsworth Center – its public health laboratory – and confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The sequencing showed revertant polio Sabin type 2 virus.

"This is indicative of a transmission chain from an individual who received the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which is no longer authorized or administered in the U.S., where only the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) has been given since 2000," the department wrote. "This suggests that the virus may have originated in a location outside of the U.S. where OPV is administered, since revertant strains cannot emerge from inactivated vaccines."

The state Health Department, the Rockland County Department of Health and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are coordinating to continue the case investigation and "proactively respond."..............

The live weakened virus polio vaccine is less expensive to produce and is largely used in less affluent countries where cost matters. IOW, the US guy who got this vaccine weakened-virus probably came into contact with a person from a third world country who had recently been vaccinated or had otherwise picked up the virus. Due to how briefly such a person would be infectious, it is probable the person carrying the virus came to the US legally (rather than entering the US by more time-consuming ways).

The weakened-virus polio vaccine works by infecting the recipient with the weakened virus. While the recipient's immune system is recognizing and responding to the virus, the person is shedding the virus in bowel movements, and in places where sewage systems are less robust (or non-existent) and hygiene habits are lacking, the weakened-virus polio vaccine vaccine can cause an outbreak of the weakened virus. The virus is benign, but if an outbreak continues long enough there is risk that the virus could mutate into a less benign form.

This may be the reason the weakened-virus polio vaccine is no longer approved for use in the US.

Another good reason to stay away from SanFranshitco and other liberal 'paradises'.

The disease is spread by contact, including, but not exclusively, sexual. This current outbreak traces to a couple of large international "Pride" festivals, but the first case(s) in the US were from a pet shop that had an exotic critter from Africa.

Well both are spread via contact with fecal matter... so you make the call!

Mea goofa, you are correct I mixed up the two. Maybe I was under-caffeinated. Or maybe protein-depraved.
