A Japanese submarine that was preparing to attack the Panama Canal during World War Two has been discovered off the coast of Hawaii.

The 400-foot (122-meter) ‘Sen-Toku’ class vessel - among the largest pre-nuclear submarines ever built - was found by chance in August off the southwest coast of Oahu.

It has been missing since 1946 according to scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The I-400 and its sister ship, the I-401, which was found off Oahu in 2005, were able to travel one and a half times around the world without refuelling.

It could also hold up to three folding-wing bombers that could be launched minutes after resurfacing, the scientists said.

Are you forgetting the voyage of U-234.Her first and only mission into enemy territory consisted of the attempted delivery of uranium oxide and German advanced weapons technology to the Empire of Japan. They have a DVD out on this voyage with some of the surviving crew being interviewed.

. The I-401 lies about 820 meters (2665 feet) off the coast of Barbers Point. The bow is broken off just forward of the aircraft hangar. The two pieces are not far apart and are connected by a debris field. The main hull is sitting upright on the bottom, the numbers "I-401" are clearly visible on the sides of the conning tower. Her 25 mm antiaircraft guns seem in almost perfect condition
