Now they're saying 2,000 or so dead.
https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/earthquake-turkey-syria-death-toll-rescues/
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit southeast Turkey on Monday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, mere hours after a first major temblor killed more than 2,000 people on both sides of the Turkish and Syrian borders in the region. The first quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks felt for hundreds of miles around.
The first earthquake, a magnitude 7.8, hit southeast Turkey and northern Syria. In addition to the dead, thousands were injured and a frantic search was underway for survivors trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Turkey's disaster and emergencies management agency (AFAD) said the initial quake had claimed at least 1,490 lives and destroyed some 2,824 buildings, according to the Reuters news agency. Syrian government officials and rescue agencies that work in rebel-held parts of the war-torn nation said more than 800 people were killed in the country. ...

Turkey earthquake death toll climbs past 17,000, survivors struggle to stay warm
By Associated Press
February 9, 2023
GAZIANTEP, Turkey — Thousands who lost their homes in a catastrophic earthquake huddled around campfires and clamored for food and water in the bitter cold, three days after the temblor and series of aftershocks hit Turkey and Syria, killing more than 17,000.
Rescuers continued their race to pull more people alive from the rubble, with the window closing to find trapped survivors. While stories of miraculous rescues briefly buoyed spirits, the grim reality of the hardship facing tens of thousands who survived the disaster cast a pall.
In the Turkish city of Antakya, dozens of people scrambled for aid in front of a truck distributing children’s coats and other supplies.
Ahmet Tokgoz, a survivor, called for the government to evacuate people from the devastated region. While many of the tens of thousands who have lost their homes have found shelter in tents, stadiums and other temporary accommodation, others have spent the nights outdoors since Monday’s 7.8 magnitude quake.
“Especially in this cold, it is not possible to live here,” he said. “People are warming up around campfires, but campfires can only warm you up so much. … If people haven’t died from being stuck under the rubble, they’ll die from the cold.”

Turkey earthquake opened 190-mile-long fissure, satellite images show
Space.com, Feb 10, 2023
(https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1398D/production/_128596208_turkey_fault_analysis-2x-nc.png.webp)
Two enormous cracks in Earth's crust opened near the Turkish-Syrian border after two powerful earthquakes shook the region on Monday (Feb. 6), killing over 20,000 people.
Researchers from the U.K. Centre for the Observation & Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes & Tectonics (COMET) found the ruptures by comparing images of the area near the Mediterranean Sea coast taken by the European Earth-observing satellite Sentinel-1 before and after the devastating earthquakes.
The longer of the two ruptures stretches 190 miles (300 kilometers) in the northeastern direction from the northeastern tip of the Mediterranean Sea. The crack was created by the first of the two major tremors that hit the region on Monday, the more powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck at 4:17 a.m. local time (8:17 p.m. EST on Feb. 5). The second crack, 80 miles long (125 km), opened during the second, somewhat milder 7.5-magnitude temblor about nine hours later...
Such ruptures appear commonly after powerful earthquakes, professor Tim Wright, who leads the COMET team, told Space.com in an email. These two fissures, however, are unusually long, a testament to the enormous amount of energy the earthquakes unleashed.
The movement of the tectonic plates that caused the earthquakes was such that the cracks are clearly visible on the surface, running through towns and in some cases directly through buildings.

Turkey Arrests 130 Building Contractors as Quake Deaths Hit 33,000+
Simon Kent 12 Feb 2023
Turkish officials have detained 130 people allegedly involved in illegal construction methods as rescuers on Sunday looked to extricate more survivors of last week’s devastating earthquakes now estimated to have claimed more than 33,000 lives.
AP reports the death toll from the 7.8 magnitude and 7.5 magnitude quakes that hit south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria nine hours apart on Feb. 6 rose to 33,179 on Sunday.
Officials and medics said the total is made up of 29,605 people who died in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria from Monday’s 7.8-magnitude quake.
Tens of thousands of people have also been left homeless.
excerpt:
Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said those under investigation were being challenged for their alleged responsibility in the construction of buildings that failed to withstand the quakes, according to the AP report.
Those being questioned are being detained until formal charges are laid.
While the quakes were powerful, victims, experts and people across Turkey are blaming faulty construction for multiplying the devastation saying the combination of poor building practices and lax inspection standards combined to deliver the catastrophic death toll.
Turkey’s construction codes meet current earthquake-engineering standards, at least on paper, but they are too rarely enforced, explaining why thousands of buildings toppled over or pancaked down onto the people inside.

How many government building inspectors who approved the construction have been arrested? I think everyone knows how greasing the palms of inspectors work, it takes more than corrupt builders.

Earthquake death toll passes 40,000 in Turkey as aftershocks continue
February 18, 2023
The total number of people in Turkey killed in the devastating earthquake has reached 40,642, the disaster authority AFAD said on Saturday. Several thousand more died in neighbouring Syria.
Later on Saturday, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook south-eastern Turkey, in the Kahramanmaraş area, which was affected by the initial quakes.
The latest quake occurred at 10:31 pm (1931 GMT), Kandilli monitor tweeted. The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 5. It was not initially clear whether anyone was injured, or the extent of any damage.
More than 5,700 aftershocks have been recorded since the original 7.7-magnitude quake hit the Turkey-Syria border region on February 6, AFAD Chairman Yunus Sezer told reporters in Ankara earlier on Saturday.
Around 13,000 rescue workers were carrying out final efforts to save people from underneath the rubble in the worst-hit Turkish provinces of Hatay and Kahramanmaraş, AFAD's Sezer said, adding that the search-and-rescue mission is planned to be finalized later on Sunday. ... Not that I don't think they deserve help, they are in fact now 98% moslem and that has been the de facto state religion for quite some time as Christians and Jews have emigrated to countries more compitable. Turkey is no longer the nation of tolerance to all religions, especially under Erdogan.

Yes.Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham, and son, Edward, met with patients and our medical team at our Emergency Field Hospital in Antakya, Turkey, on Feb. 18.
While the Grahams were onsite, two people who had been pulled from the rubble in recent days arrived by ambulance to our Emergency Field Hospital. The two had been receiving treatment at a facility elsewhere, but were transferred to the Samaritan’s Purse hospital for additional critical care. As they were rushed in, Franklin Graham was able to witness our team at work in the emergency room. He stepped out after a short time, allowing them space to care for the patients.
“We’ve got an incredible team of people working here from all over the world,” Franklin Graham said. Both Grahams spent quality time encouraging the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) this week. About 100 Samaritan’s Purse staffers, including medical and non-medical disaster specialists, are on the ground in the region.
The field hospital has received more than 500 patients and provided numerous surgeries since opening Feb. 13. Our doctors, nurses, and medical personnel are treating those rushed to our hospital with broken bones, infections, and other urgent needs stemming from deadly earthquakes that decimated entire communities. The team is also seeing patients who need care for serious chronic illnesses that require attention in light of the fact that the region’s healthcare system has been crippled. ...
