Florida woman who reportedly shot, killed terminally ill husband at hospital charged with murder
Ellen Gilland faces 1 count first-degree premeditated murder, 3 counts aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

By Pilar Arias | Fox News

A Florida woman who shot and killed her terminally ill husband inside a Daytona Beach hospital made her first court appearance Sunday and was denied bond.

Online Volusia County jail records show Ellen Gilland, 76, of New Smyrna faces one count of first-degree premeditated murder and three aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges.

No family or friends showed up on her behalf at the court appearance, FOX 35 Orlando reports.

Gilland apparently did not say much during the appearance. She answered the judge's questions as she was read her charges and then was escorted out of the courtroom.

Quote
"Apparently because he was terminally ill, they had a conversation about it, and they actually planned this approximately three weeks ago that if he continued to take a turn for the worst that he wanted her to end this," Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said at a news conference, according to WESH 2 News. "Obviously, we're unsure how she brought that gun into the hospital, but this was planned."

How about in her purse Dumbass! I don't know about Florida but I have yet to go to a hospital in California that has metal detectors at their entry points. I bet the hospital is just pissed that they didn't get to 'euthanize him. I'm torn, because if they had this discussion and he was terminal and looking at a lot of pain and suffering I can understand what she did, if not condone the method but she may have not had another option. If I were on the jury I would not vote to convict. Who know how we would respond in a similar situation.

I agree...I could not convict either...

If her lawyer can prove that her husband had Covid at the time he was shot, then she walks.

This isn't like shooting a home intruder who presents an immediate threat to your safety or that of your family. That would be a justifiable homicide. Unless she can somehow couch this killing in "justifiable" terms, criminal charges are appropriate in this case. The prosecutor really doesn't have much choice, no matter how sad the circumstances.

At the same time, I certainly sympathize with the woman and her husband, and the ordeal they've been going through. Without knowing more of the facts, which I'm sure will be presented to the court, I'll speculate that it's very possible she could get out of this with a conviction but no jail time.

That sounds reasonable.

Can't condone it. But yeah... Pretty simpatico with your position.

It ain't much of a stretch for me to have to put a friend out of his misery. Have done as much for critters that were better friends to me than most hoomins. Thankfully, I have not been tempted as such, as I  would likely fail the test.

But I am not for the modern ideology of eugenics, which is what such cases present. I cannot condone the general act. But on a personal level, I reckon I would prefer to turn a blind eye. Had she brought him home and arranged a less blatant method of equal effect...

Is the DA upset she used a gun instead of pills in what, apparently, was an assisted suicide?

Sorry, but if he wanted to end it, it should have been him that pulled the trigger. Putting it off on your wife at the end game is just cruel. Asked to be released from the hospital and go home, the hospital ain't cutting it... IMHO of course.
