Biden to tout infrastructure investments alongside McConnell on Wednesday
The Hill, Jan 1, 2023

President Biden will travel to Kentucky on Wednesday to tout infrastructure investments and his broader economic plan, and he’ll be joined by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the White House said Sunday.

Biden will head to Kentucky one day after the a new GOP House majority is sworn in to speak about “how his economic plan is rebuilding our infrastructure, creating good-paying jobs that don’t require a four-year degree, and revitalizing communities left behind,” the White House said.

McConnell is expected to attend, as is Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R), Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), White House deputy communications director Herbie Ziskend tweeted.

DeWine last week announced more than $1 billion in funding through the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law to replace the Brent Spence Bridge, which connects Kentucky and Ohio.

The event reflects how the White House is hoping to emphasize bipartisanship and its willingness to reach across the aisle as the new session of Congress gets underway, with Republicans narrowly in control of the House and Democrats holding a slim majority in the Senate.

White House officials have spent the weeks since November’s midterm elections arguing it showed the American people expect leaders to work together to get things done, and Biden and his team have expressed a desire to find Republicans who are willing to work with them.

Joe Biden Teaming Up with Mitch McConnell in Kentucky to Promote Infrastructure

President Joe Biden plans to appear with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in Kentucky on Wednesday, to promote infrastructure.

The president will use his appearance with McConnell to signal bipartisanship with establishment Republicans even as they take control of the House of Representatives.

Biden and McConnell are expected to celebrate the massive $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill passed in 2021, which McConnell and establishment Republicans worked with Democrats and the White House to get passed.

Biden, McConnell to Celebrate $1.2T Infrastructure Bill as ‘Mutual Accomplishment’ in Kentucky

Wendell Husebø 4 Jan 2023

President Joe Biden and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will jointly celebrate the costly 2021 infrastructure bill in Covington, Kentucky, on Wednesday.

McConnell, who —  along with 18 other Republican senators — enabled Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, will travel to his home state to celebrate the 2021 legislative success with Biden. The pair will specifically laud the upgrades to Brent Spence Bridge, which spans the Ohio River from Covington to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Biden will “deliver remarks on how his economic plan is rebuilding our infrastructure, creating good-paying jobs that don’t require a four-year degree, and revitalizing communities left behind,” the White House announced.

McConnell’s decision to work with the Biden administration to pass the infrastructure bill was highly controversial, though it follows a pattern of McConnell working against conservatives in 2022.

“Why is it that Old Crow Mitch McConnell voted for a terrible Democrat Socialist Infrastructure Plan, and induced others in his Party to do likewise, when he was incapable of getting a great Infrastructure Plan wanting to be put forward by me and the Republican Party?” former President Donald Trump asked in November.

But establishment Senate allies on Wednesday defended McConnell’s decision to work with Biden. Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) told Punchbowl News compromising with Democrats is a good idea.
