As former President Donald Trump pursues another bid for the White House, a new poll offers fresh evidence that Pennsylvania Republicans may be considering an alternative: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis leads Trump, 45% to 40%, in a hypothetical head-to-head 2024 primary election, according to a survey of Pennsylvania Republican voters.
Those figures include people who said they would “definitely” or “probably” support the candidates.
Twelve percent said they were undecided, and 4% preferred another candidate. Respondents were not asked about any other potential GOP candidates by name.
The poll, taken Nov. 19-21, comes as some in the party have blamed Trump for the GOP’s poor showing in this month’s midterm elections. The former president’s endorsed candidates lost several key races, including elections for governor and U.S. Senate in battleground Pennsylvania.

The survey of 639 registered Republican voters in Pennsylvania had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Very true. You can find a number of polls posing the same "questions" and get varying conclusions/percentages. I posted a poll somewhere in this forum that contradicted another poll answering the same questions about Trump vs DeSantis. It's all about where the poll preparers want the "needle to point."

Very true about the polls. Used to sway opinion and votes if that matters anymore with fixed elections. Neither DeSantis or TRUMP has a chance in 2024 under the current voting standards. Just look at a Electoral Map. The best any R can do is 268 EC votes. Not enough and the D wins no matter who runs or the candidate is. The EC is the only thing that matters in POTUS voting and the D have the fix and votes in already. R do not care who is in the WH, the UNIPARTY rules. :yowsa:

Dec. 13, 2022Republican support for Donald Trump's presidential bid in 2024 has cratered, an exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll finds, as the former president is beleaguered by midterm losses and courtroom setbacks.
By 2-1, GOP and GOP-leaning voters now say they want Trump's policies but a different standard-bearer to carry them. While 31% want the former president to run, 61% prefer some other Republican nominee who would continue the policies Trump has pursued.
They have a name in mind: Two-thirds of Republicans and those inclined to vote Republican want Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to run for president. By double digits, 56% to 33%, they prefer DeSantis over Trump.
"Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center. ...
While Biden now leads Trump, he trails DeSantis in a head-to-head race, with DeSantis at 47%, Biden at 43%. ...

DeSantis just needs to sit tight and keep his powder dry for at least a year. There will be PACs out there raising money for him up the kazoo. But he should not get in until the clamoring for a viable Trump alternative is at fever pitch. Meanwhile, as Trump campaigns without any significant opposition, he will likely do his usual disgusting schtick against a man who is not even in the race, making DeSantis all the more likable.
The key for DeSantis is not to take any of Trump's bait. Just smile and say "I am focused on the people of Florida right now. They are my primary concern." Rinse and repeat.
I think DJT's act is wearing thin with all but the core MAGA crowd. I would hate to lose them because they are very decent, patriotic people. But make no mistake. IF DJT thinks he is going to lose he will try to blow the whole thing up and pull as many of his people out with him as he can. So it is a very delicate situation, especially if DeSantis decides to return the fire that is undoubtedly coming his way.
So long as the GOP nomination is DeSantis' for the asking, DeSantis need do nothing but wait until the asking becomes begging.

Had Donald just stayed out of the 2024 race and allowed for a normal primary, the conservatives would stand a chance of unseating Biden. The MAGA cult is the problem --- they are blind to the political damage from Trump's behavior, or just don't care. And honestly, my patience with them ran out some time ago. They are old enough to know better.

This is a devastating poll for Trump v DeSantis. Only one demographic prefers the former POTUS: those earning under $20k. Conservatives, Fox viewers prefer RDS by 20-30 points. If accurate, there will have to be a face-saving exit ramp to minimize fallout.

Seriously? Whether it be Trump, DeSantis, Pompeo, Noem or whatever GOP nominee, until we have election integrity of course Joe's going to win. I'm not quite sure what people don't understand about a stolen election and SCOTUS looking the other way. :shrug:

IMHO it's all an illusion anyways; the DEMS aren't going to give up their power.

Trump is tortured by the events of 2020 especially with the suppression of the Hunter Biden story, probably a factor in his reelection loss. On a personal level, I don’t blame him, and his bitterness is understandable. But that’s not what voters want in a president.

Except he flipped solidly blue Miami Dade. So I wouldn’t say that he’s not ready to take on the socialist and the media.
But you’re right. DeSantis could run, get elected, and just become another George Bush. There’s a danger with any Republican
