Just for fun….Hurray for Thanksgiving!

Southern Turkey Cornbread Dressing.
-
Gotta have cranberry sauce with that stuffing and gravy.
Of course, there's always crawfish.

I’ve never had this, but it looks so yummy!
Baby Lobsters?

I love crawfish more as an Étouffée.

Otherwise known as Crawdads or Mud Bugs.

While my fave is Turkey, we're going to rotisserie a Chicken to go with the stuffing and gravy...no guests this year and the catz like chicken more.

Crawfish in December? My Yankee wife loves crawfish, but the first drive through places don't have the mudbugs available usually until mid January, and often as late a early February.
Me? I used to frequent a bar in the late 70's- early '80's that served the stuff up free, and I got burned out on it.

Southern Turkey Cornbread Dressing.
Yes!
-
My favorite meal of the year to cook (and eat). Turkey, sausage stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, mashed sweet potatoes (just mashed with milk & butter) cranberry salad, vegetable of some sort, zucchini bread, King's Hawaiian sweet rolls, pumpkin pie with homemade whipped cream, and pecan pie.
Usually we have an afternoon Thanksgiving dinner and then later on we eat leftovers and of course .... more pie!!! I love both pumpkin and pecan, so I normally do a little bit of both.
Leftovers again the next day .... yummmerific!!
-
Pee-can pie.
-
Pee-can pie.
I've always pronounced it pe-can, but pee-can or pe-can is really hard to beat at Thanksgiving...and a dollop of whipped cream makes it even better.
-

My southern relatives always pronounced it pee-can, while most up here in Iowa don't, and of course I have to remind them how to say it 'correctly.'
I can substitute pumpkin pie, but yes whipped cream or ice cream is a necessity. That gets me into a good sugar coma for watching the football game.
-
Thanksgiving night.
Pre-cut pumpkin pie, spray-on whip cream, 3am, buck nekkid, by the frigerator light.
Best.thing.ever.

Leftovers sometimes taste better.

I have to have both pecan and pumpkin pies, in multiples, with plenty of ice cream.
One year my older sis made me a pecan pie, but she didn't leave it in the oven long enough and it didn't set. It made the best ice cream topping though.

Pecan Pie is too damned good for me. If I made it, I'd swallow a whole pie and that's good for about five pounds on my ass.
-
The turkey
I'm usually eating it as I carve it

Wait .... what??? People actually eat pecan pie? I always thought there was one pie per family brought out year after year for the holidays ----just to keep the fruitcake company.

Now I know that people think fruitcakes are a joke, but to consider pecan pies as a joke too is going too far. I take it you've never even tasted a fresh out of the oven homemade pecan pie. Or even a chocolate pecan pie. And if you've ever eaten just a slice of my Mom's fruitcake, you wouldn't joke about fruitcakes either.
-
The list is missing cranberry sauce/relish. I like both the canned version we had growing up in the '60's and homemade versions cooked from fresh cranberries with candied orange peel (or better still kumquats, if you can find them).
-
Now I know that people think fruitcakes are a joke, . . .
Fruitcakes are a joke, unless you do them right, which involves copious amounts of (take your pick) brandy, rum or whiskey, in which case they are simply glorious!
-
Conventional Thanksgiving fave: Jalapeño dressing
Unconventional Thanksgiving fave: Crab gumbo

Whiskey sure makes pound and bundt cakes fantastic as well.

Don't forget the Oyster Rockefeller!

Southern Turkey Cornbread Dressing.
:amen:
-
I have never had anything unconventional for thanksgiving. True to form, all the way along, entirely predictable, and enormously delicious.

I love oysters! Mmm. Now I’m hungry…..
I thought the only things left at the end of the world would be cockroaches, fruitcakes and Keith Richards
-
In addition to all the normal stuff, we added french bread with a thick slab of butter and caviar spread across the top. Truly yum!!!

 I just think pecan pie is sickeningly sweet.
-
I'd never heard of pecan pie as a TG dessert offering. I agree - too sweet.
We always went with pumpkin, apple or mince pie, but mostly pumpkin. I made a pumpkin cheesecake one year, which was good, but just not the same.

I used to think it was way too sweet as well until I was given a different recipe ... now I love it.

Heck, any pie on Turkey day is wonderful! I don't make pies too often, and TG is a good excuse to make a couple.
-
We will have pumpkin, apple, pecan, and cherry cheesecake...

Oooh yes, cherry cheesecake. Grandma use to make something close called Cherry Yum-yum. Used to eat that till I got sick.

You would change your mind if you ever had one made by the lady of this house. @mountaineer @Right_in_Virginia
And BTW: I still hate those syrupy, sickeningly sweet, concoctions that pass for pecan pie in some places.
-
I voted for the Turkey, Stuffing, Gravy option but ONLY if the Turkey is deep fried by me personally and the stuffing is prepared according to our old family recipe and accompanied by copious quantities of homemade cranberry sauce.
-
Dunno why people are down on fruitcake. Especially with walnuts and pecans, I love the stuff. It's like White Man's Pemmican. (Survival food).
-
I’m hearing a lot this year about salted turkeys.

Yeah, I'm not anti-fruitcake. Depends on the density of the nuts and fruit, I guess. My mother used to make mini-fruitcakes the same size as mini-muffins. They weren't bad. Even non-fruitcake lovers could handle a bite-sized one.

That's why you drink a cup of black coffee with it.
I love all the traditional Thanksgiving menu items, but my favorite thing is the "food for the soul" .... time spent with family. That's the most precious thing.
-
We will have pumpkin, apple, pecan, and cherry cheesecake...
All of the above with the addition of Lemon custard. And for a salad...my grandmother's pineapple salad, that contains pineapple, whipped cream, jello and diced pecans, covered in grated cheese.
-

Oh my, @Right_in_Virginia! although I am a cheesecake "purist" I will occasionally have cherry topped...but this sounds delicious! Wish I had the recipe.
In answer to the poll....cornbread dressing and more cornbread dressing!

YEP. Mama's cherry cheesecake is a fixture, and the highlight of every family get-together... The last thing laid out, and the first thing gone.

We have something like that... Pineapple, green jello, walnuts, cream, and cream cheese all worried together...
And don't fault me on the walnuts... Pecans are a long way away, and cost a bit up in here.

My next brother of four, I am the oldest, invited me for Thanksgiving. I reminded
him that I hadn't taken the stab.
I remember many Thanksgivings at his home as well as nearly a thousand
phenomenal meals there. Last year they had the scare and my Sister in
Law had my brother call and disinvite me. The concern was from their daughter
in law who had a neighbor in difficulty.
My brother and Sandy his wife do all the tradition. Cooking is their hobby. I will
see his sons and their grandchildren.
Our whole family are football watchers and players. No football games this year
as we have banned the NFL and professional sports from our homes. Just
conversation. We like it better that way.
Happy Thanksgiving for all the Lords Blessings.

Food for the soul! My wife has rels in southern California, and they've been so terrified since the plague started we haven't been able to see them since the beginning of 2020. We're filthy, unvaxxed Arizonans, and this they cannot abide.

I am a big sweet potato fan.
I'm assuming for corbe's sake that the "anything else" includes weed (in the form of edibles).

Looks good to me, but I haven't tried it yet.
-
Going to start baking tomorrow -- going to make a couple of loaves of zucchini bread and then pies in a couple of days. I thought about doing a pumpkin cheesecake, but decided to stick just to a traditional pumpkin pie. I bought some tart shells for the leftover pumpkin batter that I always wind up with. I've never tried the pre-made tart shells, so we'll see how they turn out.

@Right_in_Virginia
Finally someone who agrees with me! The truth is, I'm not too keen on that many desserts as I don't really have a sweet tooth. If there's some cheesecake, I might cut a sliver of that, but I just don't gravitate toward the dessert table. That being said, I'll happily follow up my meal with another helping of dressing. Can't get enough of that.

Any food shared with loved ones... You left off Smashed Tators/gravy (cream potatoes, whipped potatoes, etc), so I clicked turkey with the trimmings.... Turkey gravy ranks up there with the best.

We are kindred spirits @AllThatJazzZ I'm usually the one heating a plate of turkey, gravy and yams as my dessert.

I am baking two pies. One apple and one pumpkin. I’m thinking of a graham cracker crust.
Apple and Boston Cream are my favorites. My parents like pecan pies but I never developed a taste for it.
I have cousins in the South and every year they would send up a key lime pie and a pecan pie.
I’m not crazy about key lime, but I like a lemon custard pie.

Jellied cranberry sauce ...

We had cranberry sauce as a kid. I remember the squish sound as it
dropped from the can. Many years later I put it together that the sauce
came from a berry. I didn't like it so paid little attention.
Slow on the uptake.
