... On stage, Johns played Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, introducing the world to the bittersweet standard-to-be 'Send in the Clowns' by Stephen Sondheim.

Johns gained a reputation throughout her decades-long career for being a perfectionist and prided herself on always opting for multi-faceted roles. She has been hailed as 'legendary' and 'iconic' by fans mourning her death.

Her famous role in Mary Poppins saw her play a mother who reconnected with her children thanks to their magical nanny, played by Julie Andrews, and perform a rousing rendition of 'Sister Suffragette'. ...

Johns' greatest triumph was playing Desiree Armfeldt in 'A Little Night Music,' for which she won a Tony in 1973.

Sondheim wrote the show's hit song 'Send in the Clowns' to suit her distinctive husky voice, but she lost the part in the 1977 film version to Elizabeth Taylor. ...

'Starsky and Hutch' Star David Soul Dead at 80

Quote

David Soul, famous for playing Detective Kenneth Hutchinson on the buddy cop TV series "Starsky and Hutch," is dead ... TMZ has learned.

The actor died Thursday at a hospital in London following a long term illness ... according to a family member. We're told David was surrounded by his family when he passed.

David suffered from a number of health issues in his life ... most notably chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He blames COPD on a half-century of smoking three packs of cigarettes daily.

His wife Helen Snell said the "beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend."

Aside from playing iconic Ken Hutchinson, he became a pretty good character actor in the 1980s when I was a teenager.  I remember him playing the commander of the Alaska National Guard against a Soviet Spetznaz team in the miniseries World War III and vicious bank robber Mike PLatt in    In the Line of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders.

Didn't care much for his singing though.

Joyce Randolph, who starred in the 1955 sitcom “The Honeymooners,” has died. She was 99.

Randolph reportedly died peacefully Saturday in her sleep in her New York City home due to the effects of old age, her son told TMZ.

According to the outlet, the last surviving member of the hit television show had been in hospice care at the time of her death and was unable to walk.

The Michigan native, who was born in 1924, got her acting start when she moved to New York City in 1950 to star in a Broadway show called “Ladies Night in a Turkish Bath” before moving into TV.

Norman Jewison, ‘Moonstruck’ and ‘In the Heat of the Night’ Director, Dies at 97

Quote

Oscar-nominated film director and producer Norman Jewison, who steered the 1967 racial drama “In the Heat of the Night” to a best picture Oscar and also helmed such popular films as “Moonstruck,” “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” and “The Thomas Crown Affair,” as well as film musicals “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” died Saturday at his Los Angeles residence. He was 97.

His film career began with fluffy Doris Day comedies like “The Thrill of It All.” But Jewison’s social conscience began to surface with “In the Heat of the Night” and, later, the labor union drama “F.I.S.T.” and other films focusing on racial tensions such as “A Soldier’s Story” and “The Landlord” (the latter of which he only produced), though he never abandoned comedies and romances.

'Star Trek' Star Gary Graham Dead at 73

Quote

Gary Graham -- famous from 'Star Trek: Enterprise' -- has died ... according to his loved ones.

The veteran TV actor passed away Monday -- an announcement that was delivered by his ex-wife, Susan Lavelle, who didn't offer a cause of death or any other details about the circumstances. She did, however, have a touching remembrance for her husband.

She noted his current wife, Becky, was by his side and added -- "Gary was funny, sarcastic sense of humor but kind, fought for what he believed in, a devout Christian and was so proud of his daughter, Haylee. This was sudden so please pray for our daughter as she navigates through this thing called grief. Fly high into the heavens Gar!"

Gary is perhaps most recognizable from his time on 'STE' ... where he played Ambassador Soval from 2001 to 2005 for a total of 12 episodes. However, another major claim to fame of his came from the late '80s show 'Alien Nation' ... on which he was the co-lead.

Yes, when ST: Enterprise was new, I remember recognizing the actor playing the Vulcan ambassador as the same actor from Alien Nation. I thought he did a really good job on that show.

By the way, in addition to the 22 original episodes of Alien Nation, Fox also produced five TV movies that included all of the actors from the series and continued the story of the series.  I did a search on YouTube, and there is a playlist that has the entire series and the five movies available to watch for free.

Charles Osgood, veteran CBS newsman and longtime host of "Sunday Morning," dies at 91
January 23, 2024 / 1:21 PM EST / CBS News (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/charles-osgood-veteran-cbs-newsman-and-longtime-host-of-sunday-morning-dies-at-91/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab8c&linkId=287285006)
Quote
Award-winning journalist Charles Osgood, who anchored "CBS Sunday Morning" for 22 years and was host of the long-running radio program "The Osgood File," died Tuesday at home in New Jersey.  He was 91.

The cause of death was dementia, his family said.

Osgood, a gifted news writer, poet and author, spent 45 years at CBS News before retiring in September 2016. Osgood began anchoring "CBS Sunday Morning" in 1994. During his run on the show it reached its highest ratings levels in three decades, and three times earned the Daytime Emmy as Outstanding Morning Program. ...

Often referred to as CBS News' poet-in-residence, Osgood was called "one of the last great broadcast writers" by Charles Kuralt, whom Osgood succeeded as host of the Sunday morning magazine program in 1994. But he did more than carry on a great American oral tradition; he could also play piano, organ, banjo, violin, and was an accomplished composer and lyricist who could also sing along. He employed his many talents inside and outside CBS, sometimes performing with professional orchestras such as The New York Pops, The Boston Pops and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

"To say there's no one like Charles Osgood is an understatement," said "Sunday Morning" executive producer Rand Morrison. "He embodied the heart and soul of 'Sunday Morning.' His signature bow tie, his poetry … just his presence was special for the audience, and for those of us who worked with him. At the piano, Charlie put our lives to music. Truly, he was one of a kind – in every sense."  ...

This would have made my wife very sad. She loved watching "Sunday Morning", largely because of Charles Osgood (and Charles Kuralt before him). When Osgood retired from the show she pretty much stopped watching it.

Former NFL linebacker-turned-action icon Carl Weathers died Thursday. He was 76.

The Hollywood star, perhaps best known for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, died “peacefully” in his sleep, according to a report citing a statement released by the Weathers family.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” the statement read. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024.”

“Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

This is a developing story.

Bob Edwards, longtime public radio host, dies at 76

From 1979 to 2004, Edwards was the host of Morning Edition, NPR's morning drive time show, becoming one of radio's most-listened-to personalities of the era. After being controversially forced out of his position, he accepted a job in satellite radio, hosting a similarly themed morning newsmagazine, which ran until 2014 with highlights being syndicated to public radio affiliates as Bob Edwards Weekend.

Edwards died February 10.

The general opinion is that NPR pulled a demographic move. Edwards was still popular—he had more listeners than Howard Stern in the same time slot if that gives you any idea—but NPR decided they didn't like being tied to him. So they pulled a "rubber room" strategy: they didn't fire him, but they gave the hosting duties to two younger anchors and reassigned him to a much smaller "correspondent" role, forcing him to quit.

He didn't do anything wrong. The controversy came when NPR fans (yes, they exist) got upset. But, because it was morning drive and NPR is pretty much the only show of its kind, the listeners stayed. Edwards got a gig at satellite radio and stayed there for the next decade until he got to retire on his terms.

William “Bill” Post — the man who created the beloved toaster treat Pop-Tarts — died on Saturday, his family announced. He was 96.

Post, a Michigan native and son of immigrants who worked his way up from a truck washer to a senior vice president, brightened millions of Americans’ mornings with the sweet pastry that hit the shelves in 1964.

The great-grandfather is often credited with inventing the breakfast treat, though he would always say it was a team effort, according to his obituary.  ...

David Libert, whose musical exploits ranged from The Happenings to Alice Cooper, dies at 81

Libert began his career as a founding member of The Happenings, the group led by vocalist Bob Miranda to this very day that was one of the most successful cover bands in American history. The Libert/Miranda formula involved injecting previous hit songs with a New Jersey pop sound (so much so that another more famous New Jersey pop band, The Four Seasons, would later poach The Happenings' guitarist John Paiva).

Libert left The Happenings in 1970 as its chart success had waned to enter the music management business, managing bands such as The Rare Earth and the original Alice Cooper Band and serving as an agent for Parliament-Funkadelic and The Runaways.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. John C. “Doc” Bahnsen dies at 89.
Quote
... During his first tour of duty in Vietnam in 1965-66, Bahnsen commanded the “Bandits” helicopter gunship platoon at Bien Hoa. Most of his 18 decorations for valor came in his second tour, in 1968-69, when as a major he commanded an air cavalry troop, including a 40 man rifle platoon, observation helicopters and gunships. He fought in more than 300 engagements and had several helicopters shot out from under him.

In a 2007 interview, Bahnsen said, “My only regret is about the 44 soldiers killed under my command. Every single loss is a tragedy for the military and the family.” He has been vocal that politicians who have no family members serving in the military are much too eager to send U.S. service members into danger. ...

“Doc” Bahnsen’s commendations include the Distinguished Service Cross, five Silver Stars, four Legions of Merit, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Bronze Stars (three with a V for valor), two Purple Hearts and 51 Air Medals. He was inducted into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame, the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame and was invited to and honored by the U.S. Air Force Staff College Gathering of Eagles. Maintaining a continuous relationship with West Point over the years, Bahnsen was named a 2016 Distinguished Graduate of West Point. ...

At “Doc’s” request, he is to be cremated and his ashes buried in an Army ammo box on the Georgia farm. Memorial celebrations in Georgia and West Virginia are to be arranged.

Back when music lyrics were easy to understand.  What we have today and for the past 25 years is pure garbage.  A reflection of a dying culture perhaps.

In the early 70s there was a change in how songs were mixed, so that the vocals were at a volume level similar to the instruments.

The lead singer in the verse of the song was Barry McGuire, who is 88 and still alive. He was famous for "Eve of Destruction". A bit after McGuire stopped trying to "get higher", he recorded this Jesus Music classic:

According to the linked article, Archer did the triple backflip, and was one of only three who have. That does not mean the stunt is easy or safe, even with experience. He was setting his eyes on a quadruple, but was practicing the triple when he had his accident.

Josh Sheehan was the first to do it, Harry Bink was the other.

More like dancing in the streets. Anything Rothschild - hell, anything relating to any person of Jewish descent, especially a death - gets them all a-twitter.

It's quite hilarious. Even as the Rothschilds lost most of their wealth a century ago.

The family estate is down to about $500 million now, a pittance to the Big Tech overlords, not even enough to buy a pro sports team, let alone bailing out countries like they used to. But ask a Qanon, and they'll tell you the Rothschilds control a million times that and that their real assets are around $500 trillion, more than the entire world's money supply.

Then you go even deeper and you reach the anti-Catholic side of Kooksville, where the Rothschilds are actually puppets for the "Gray Pope" Orsini dynasty and its supposed 26-quadrillion-dollar nest egg (that's 14 digits, BTW).

ESPN, NFL mourn longtime reporter Chris Mortensen
By Alex Butler

March 4 (UPI) (https://www.upi.com/Sports_News/NFL/2024/03/04/ESPN-NFL-mourn-Chris-Mortensen/3111709553049/) -- Personalities from throughout the NFL and sports media continue to mourn longtime ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen, who died at 72 years old.

ESPN announced that Mortensen died Sunday, but did not share his cause of death. The award-winning journalist was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2016. He left his role at ESPN in 2023.  ...
Sage Steele
@sagesteele
From the moment I began working at ESPN in 2007, this man was the kindest, most supportive soul.  Every single time I saw him, he took the time to ask about my entire family....to share stories about my brother @CSteele32 with the @Ravens and especially to ask about my dad.  Both Mort & my dad shared a battle against cancer...a battle that he told me he never feared because of his faith in God.  Watching him fight for so long, to keep working (for years) despite the pain & discomfort, to CHOOSE to smile & lead with kindness no matter what...inspired me to dig deeper into my own faith.  Mort constantly prayed for my dad, and also sent me texts & scriptures during my struggles with ESPN.

I'm so blessed to have been able to call Chris Mortensen a teammate for so long, and most of all, a dear friend.  He was simply the best.  Mort, you will be missed and loved forever!! ❤️🙏🏽

Dang. There's a name that was tucked away in the deepest folds of my gray matter. My database is full at my advanced age, so I don't remember much about him. Life is funny sometimes. I haven't thought about KIKK for decades, yet in one day it has come up twice for me on this MB. Go figure.

Are you in the Houston area, @Texas Yellow Rose? I think I had you pictured north of here or maybe somewhere along I35. @Bigun was big into the radio world here in the area. He probably knew Arch Yancey, or at the very least, knew much about him. Thanks for posting this.

NEW YORK — Steve Lawrence, a singer and top stage act who kept Tin Pan Alley alive during the rock era as a solo performer and in tandem with his wife Eydie Gorme, died Thursday. He was 88.

Lawrence, whose hits included “Go Away Little Girl,” died from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease, said Susan DuBow, a spokesperson for the family.

Lawrence and Gorme — or Steve & Eydie — were known for their frequent appearances on talk shows, in nightclubs and on the stages of Las Vegas. The duo took inspiration from George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and other songwriters.

In a "better late than never" entry that I noticed in January but for some reason never put here.

Frank Farian, German producer notorious for his lip-sync acts, dies at 82

Farian, who had some successes as a pop singer in his native Germany, adopted the pseudonym "Boney M." for a dance music act he assembled. Boney M. consisted mainly of Black Caribbean women, and though Farian sang on the records (perhaps most famously in America "Rasputin" and the Christmas chestnut "Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord"), he likely recognized how incongruous it would be having a white German easy listening singer fronting such a group and instead hired a more charismatic frontman, Aruban dancer Bobby Farrell, to lip sync to Farian's lyrics. (Farrell would get to perform the songs in certain live performances, and would eventually wrest control of the Boney M. name after Farian swindled him out of his royalties; Farrell died in 2010.) During this time, Farian also produced Eruption, another Caribbean-born Eurodisco act whose lead singer, Precious Wilson, did sing lead on record. (They had one hit in America with a cover of "I Can't Stand the Rain.")

Farian is perhaps most infamous for Milli Vanilli, which took the formula he had used with Bobby Farrell to an even greater extreme. Though Farian did not sing on these records, he relied on American session vocalists Charles Shaw and Brad Howell to record vocals while two dancers, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, would lip-sync. It turned out that, unlike Farrell, Pilatus and Morvan could not speak English nor emulate the records they had allegedly recorded live—and after a notorious incident in which the group's backing track began skipping during a live concert exposing the ruse, Milli Vanilli's reputation was effectively ruined, and the planned next album was released under the brand Try'n'B, this time crediting the actual vocalists.

Farian was able to salvage his career and had some minor success with the groups No Mercy and La Bouche, who had dance hits into the 1990s.

Farian died January 24.

Author and illustrator Laurent de Brunhoff, heir of beloved ‘Babar’ series, dies at age 98

Quote

Babar author Laurent de Brunhoff, who revived his father’s popular picture-book series about an elephant-king and presided over its rise to a global multimedia franchise, has died at the age of 98.

De Brunhoff, who was from Paris and moved to the US in the 1980s, died on Friday at his home in Key West, Florida, after being in hospice care for two weeks, according to his widow, Phyllis Rose.

Just 12 years old when his father, Jean de Brunhoff, died of tuberculosis, Laurent was an adult when he drew upon his own gifts as a painter and storyteller and released dozens of books about the elephant who reigns over Celesteville, among them Babar at the Circus and Babar’s Yoga for Elephants. He preferred using fewer words than his father did, but his illustrations faithfully mimicked Jean’s gentle, understated style.

“Together, father and son have woven a fictive world so seamless that it is nearly impossible to detect where one stopped and the other started,” author Ann S Haskell wrote in the New York Times in 1981.

He was just on Fox News the other day talking about this Admin and the Israel situation..

adding

Lieberman was in the news just a few days ago after he criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for demanding early elections in Israel. He called Schumer’s gambit “outrageous” and a “mistake” in the midst of Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists

Louis Gossett Jr., Star of ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ and ‘Roots,’ Dies at 87

Quote

Louis Gossett Jr., the tough guy with a sensitive side who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a steely sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman and an Emmy for his performance as a compassionate slave in the landmark miniseries Roots, has died. He was 87.

Gossett’s nephew told the Associated Press that the actor died Thursday night in Santa Monica. The cause of death is unknown, but Gossett announced in 2010 that he had prostate cancer.

With his sleek, bald pate and athlete’s physique, Gossett was intimidating in a wide array of no-nonsense roles, most notably in Taylor Hackford’s Officer and a Gentleman (1982), where as Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley he rides Richard Gere’s character mercilessly (but for his own good) at an officer candidate school and gets into a memorable martial arts fight.

He was the second Black man to win an acting Oscar, following Sidney Poitier in 1964.

ISHMAEL REED: How were you able to take over the script for “An Officer and a Gentleman?”

Lou Gossett: Me and my agent who grew up with me back in New York– named Ed Bondy–, got the role of Sergeant Emil Foley for me, even though the role was for a white man. I’d played judges, a chief of police, an anthropologist. I had to do it 100 percent right because I had to whip my Marines into shape and bring them back up from scratch. I was in good shape from going into military life at Marine Corps Recruitment. They sent me twenty miles away.

ISHMAEL REED: In the original script Gere beats up the Drill Sergeant.

Lou Gossett: The Marines changed it. They said that an enlisted man would never beat up a Drill Sergeant. We’ll tear the place up unless you change it. They said, “If you don’t do this well, Mr. Gossett, we’re going to have to kill you.” The director was happy about that. The three of us should have received Oscars. Gere, the director and I.

Inventor of first karaoke machine, Shigeichi Negishi, dies aged 100

Quote

Shigeichi Negishi, the entrepreneur who invented the world’s first karaoke machine, has died aged 100.

Negishi, whose 1967 “Sparko Box” prototype is among several devices credited with ushering in Japan’s karaoke craze, died from natural causes in January. His death, which was made public last week, was confirmed to CNN by Shiro Kataoka, managing director of the All-Japan Karaoke Industrialist Association.

Born in 1923, Negishi founded and ran a company that assembled car stereos for automobile manufacturers in northern Tokyo. A regular listener to a singalong radio show broadcast in Japan at the time, he hooked a spare tape deck up to a microphone and mixing circuit so he could hear himself singing over music.

“When I asked the factory engineer, he said, ‘It’s easy,’” Negishi recalled in an account published by the All-Japan Karaoke Industrialist Association, an industry body for Japan’s karaoke operators. “So, I attached a microphone input terminal to the car stereo and created something like the prototype of a jukebox.”

@Smokin Joe

My next door neighbor when I was a kid was a cousin of my mothers, and was on the USS Arizona when it went down. He was MAYBE a 19 year old E-3 at the time, and manned a 50 cal machine gun and was credited with shooting down a forgotten number of Japanese airplanes before the ship started sinking and he had to jump overboard and swim for shore.

He got a Silver Star for his efforts, and the US Navy is known for being stingy when it comes to awarding serious "hero badges" like that to enlisted swine.

I didn't even know this until I was over playing with his son one day,and the son invited me to go into  his parents bedroom so he could show me the framed award letter and award. It was the first Silver Star I ever saw,and I will never forget it.

I was maybe 10 -12 years old at the time and didn't know diddly-squad about awards for bravery in the  face of enemy fire, but even I could tell that  was some serious stuff.

I have no idea  why he kept it hidden in his bedroom, unless MAYBE given all that  happened  that day,he didn't think he really earned it compared to what some of the others did. Seems like almost all of the real heroes I have me,and I have probably met more than most people (7 years in the US Army during the VN war,and 5 years of that in Special Forces) had that opinion about their own awards.  Didn't fool me,though. I clearly understood it was some serious "Hero Stuff",and was always kinda in awe of him after that.

It SEEMED like the people who had the most awards and the most impressive awards didn't like to wear them unless they had to.

My company commander on Okinawa received a Medal of Honor during the Korean War,and I saw him daily for over a year before I found that out. We had an award ceremony, and he was pretty much required to wear all his awards and decorations to hand out the awards to others.

His name was Ola Mize,in case any of you are interested, and he was genuinely one of the nicest human beings I have ever known.

To give you an example,I was a 19 year old E-4 in his company on Okie, and got drunk one night and got to wondering how the typical officers lived when off-duty,so I put on civilian clothes and went to the officers club that was located on a cliff overlooking the  East China Sea. Can't remember it's name now,but they had entertainers like Sammy Davis Jr putting on shows.

Anyhow,I kinda hung around the parking lot until a couple of car loads of officers and their wives arrived and headed for the entrance,so I just mingled in amongst them and got in without being carded.

Did ok for a while, and even saw a few junior officers from my company in there ,and they just smiled at me.

Then I got drunk enough to start wondering how the senior officers lived,so I went and sat down at a table in the  Senior Officers Lounge.

Didn't last long. Somebody from the company called Col Mize and told him what I was doing and where I was,and he came in and set a fresh whisky  glass down in front of me,and told me to "Enjoy your last drink of the evening."

I pretty much chugged it down and got the hell OUT of there.

When I saw him in the barracks hallway the next day,he just looked at me and smiled.

Not long  after that,he  called me into  his office and tried to talk me into going to OCS to become an officer. Told me he could arrange for me to come back to his command on Okie after graduating and he would send me off to VN with an A-Team so I could get some experience.

My extension papers got lost and I got new orders sending me back to Bragg before any of that could happen, though. So I volunteered to go to VA to get the HELL away from Bragg and back to Okie. That didn't work either because I got  medi-evaced back to Bragg before my 2nd  extension in VN started. Agent Orange sent me back to Bragg, and out of SF. I hated the regular army almost as much  as they hated me,so I just got out.

I have noticed that too. But if you have really done something, likely at the time you just did what needed doing and weren't concerned with how it would look later. You see even civilians who go into harm's way for others often act the same way about the heroic stuff they did.

Sometimes, they just didn't say a thing, but others carried that water.

There was a one armed guy I met when I first got to North Dakota, and I didn't pay much notice to the fact. Later I found out he'd become wrapped up in a PTO shaft while trying to clear a piece of farm equipment. His (now) missing arm so jammed up the works, that the machine shut down. He was two miles from the nearest help and not expected back for hours, long before cell phones. He tied off his upper arm with a bootlace, performed the amputation with a jack knife, and walked two miles to the nearest farmhouse for help.

Gotta respect that, but I found out from someone else who remembered the incident; he just didn't talk about it. Maybe he was sheepish about having ended up in that predicament, but farming remains in the top ten dangerous professions. That set the bar for me out here, in regards to 'tough'; that quiet strength that so many men (and women) have displayed, only to move on, and often only tell the stories among themselves or trusted friends, but usually others tell the tales about them before they will. They do not stand on their laurels.

That said, you should consider writing a book. I enjoy reading of your exploits and those of the guys around you when you were in SF.

There was no shortages of that happening at Pearl Harbor, and especially not in the Philippines, where a non-combat arms Major whose name I can not remember at the moment refused to surrender, and headed for the jungles to create a VERY effective guerilla army.

I did very little, but follow the "big boys" around and tried to learn from them.

I will admit despite hating the army at first, once I got into SF,I had the time of my life and met the most admirable people anyone could ever hope to meet.

And surprisingly, most of them were insanely funny people to be around. Can't remember even meeting ONE Prima Donna in a SF line company.

There was no shortage of them in the SF support companies, though. I suspect this is true of every infantry unit that ever existed.

Joe Flaherty, the actor, writer and comedian known for his roles on the Canadian sketch comedy series “Second City Television” and “Freaks and Geeks,” died on Monday. He was 82.

Flaherty’s daughter, Gudrun, confirmed the news to Variety in a statement through the Comedic Artists Alliance, which had previously raised funds for Flaherty to obtain a 24-hour care provider.

“After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss,” Flaherty said. “Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. His insights into the golden age of cinema didn’t just shape his professional life; they were also a source of endless fascination for me. In these last few months, as he faced his health challenges, we had the precious opportunity to watch many of those classic movies together — moments I will forever hold dear.”

Henry was among the few remaining survivors of New Orleans's early swamp-rock-and-roll scene of the 1950s and early 1960s and was best known for his novelty number "Ain't Got No Home," in which each verse was sung in a different register: normal tenor, falsetto, and a "croak" meant to emulate a frog. Rush Limbaugh took the record for use of his Homeless Updates on his radio show.

Peter Higgs, Nobelist Who Predicted the ‘God Particle,’ Dies at 94

Quote

Peter Higgs, who predicted the existence of a new particle that came to be named after him (as well as God) and sparked a half-century, worldwide, billion-dollar search for it culminating in champagne in 2012 and a Nobel Prize a year later, died on Monday at home in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was 94.

The cause was a blood disorder, said Alan Walker, his close friend and fellow physicist at the University of Edinburgh, where Dr. Higgs was an emeritus professor.

Dr. Higgs was a 35-year-old assistant professor at the university in 1964 when he suggested the existence of a new particle that would explain how other particles acquire mass. The Higgs boson, also known as “the God particle,” would become the keystone of a suite of theories known as the Standard Model, which encapsulated all human knowledge so far about elementary particles and the forces by which they shaped nature and the universe.

14 Times O.J. Simpson Got No Mercy From ‘SNL’s Norm Macdonald

O.J. Simpson died today of cancer at the age of 76. The Hall of Fame football player who infamously stood trial for murder in the 1990s had an unexpectedly robust comedy career, hosting Saturday Night Live, costarring in the popular Naked Gun movie series and serving as the butt of the late Norm Macdonald’s merciless jokes on Weekend Update. Macdonald famously lost his job at SNL for his refusal to stop attacking Simpson, a weekly jab (or even flurry of punches) that infuriated O.J.’s golfing pal, NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer.

Here are 14 of Macdonald’s most vicious punchlines at the expense of O.J.…

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre offered condolences Thursday following the death of OJ Simpson  — but made no mention of the two people he was accused, and sensationally acquitted, of killing nearly three decades ago.

“Our thoughts are with his families [sic] during this difficult time — obviously with his family and loved ones,” Jean-Pierre said at her regular briefing.

“And I’ll say this, I know that they have asked for some privacy. And so we’re going to respect that. And I’ll just leave it there.”

OJ Simpson civil judgment collection to continue after death, Goldman attorney pledges
David Cook says OJ Simpson has died ‘without penance’

By Greg Norman FOXBusiness

A California attorney seeking to collect a civil judgment from O.J. Simpson after he was found responsible for the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in a 1997 civil trial is vowing Thursday to push forward with collection following Simpson’s passing.

Simpson, 76, "succumbed to his battle with cancer" on Wednesday as he "was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," the Simpson family announced in a statement.

"I’ve been dealing with this problem since 2008, so it's been a long time, so I’m still dealing with the matter," San Francisco-based attorney David Cook told FOX Business on Thursday. "As to O.J. Simpson here, it’s really simple, it’s called dead without penance. He’s gone, but it’s without penance. For Ron, obviously he’s gone."

Simpson famously was acquitted in a 1995 murder trial for the brutal slayings of his ex-wife and Goldman outside of her Los Angeles home.

On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer.

He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.

Back in the day the Buffalo Bills would hold open practices at one of the local colleges. There would be about a 100 kids there watching. O. J. would be one of the few that stayed until every kids that got an autograph got one. Adult me was devastated when the news broke. I did not want to believe it. NEVER meet your heroes.

Reverend Cecil Williams, who co-founded Glide Memorial Church and dedicated his life to San Francisco's underserved community, died Monday at the age of 94.

The Glide Foundation said he died surrounded by friends and family at his San Francisco home.

"We have lost an incomparable champion of social justice, civil and human rights, and liberation theology," Glide said.

In a statement, San Francisco Mayor London Breed described Williams as the "conscience of San Francisco community."

As Social Gospelers go (or went), he was pretty much all social, no Gospel. OTOH, unlike some Social Gospelers, his hands and feet were where his mouth was. Sadly, while he would not recognize it, things he did did much harm, possibly more than any good he did (speaking secularly).

Sounds like Jim Jones without the Kool-Aid.

From what I've heard, Before heading off to start Jonestown, Jim Jones did do some social assistance type stuff in SF. This would have been, I guess, in the early and/or mid 70s, before I moved from Phoenix to Silicon Valley.

Cecil Williams preached all the radical stuff - race-victimology, anti-American, yada, yada, yada - but unlike, e.g., Jesse or Sharp Al, Williams did try to aid people with food and necessaries. His activities might actually have been more helpful than government programs by actually dealing with individuals as individuals.

I'm not anything like a fan, but I do try to be realistic.
