Title: California to pull plug on billion-dollar bullet train, cites ballooning costs
Post by: txradioguy on February 12, 2019, 09:26:58 pm
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday he is pulling the plug on the state's massive high-speed rail project from Los Angeles to San Francisco that was more than a decade behind schedule and billions in the red.

"Let's be real," Newsom said in his first State of the State address. "The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There's been too little oversight and not enough transparency."

Newsom added that while California has "the capacity to complete a high-speed rail link between Merced and Bakersfield," "there simply isn't a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A."

The embattled $77-billion bullet train has been an embarrassment for the Golden State and has been plagued by problems almost from the start.

The idea, long championed by Newsom's predecessor, Jerry Brown, is years behind schedule with the latest estimate for completion set for 2033.

Bullet train planners had been under increasing pressure to make progress on the system that many believe had no plausible way of living up to its goal of getting riders across the state in three hours or less.

California voters approved the pricey proposal in 2008. Backers – including several Democratic lawmakers – heralded it as an inventive concept that would connect Californians and transform transit policies down the road.

But critics claimed the bullet train project was a waste of time and money.

“This so-called bullet train is a solution in search of a problem that is plagued by billions of dollars in cost overruns and fiscal mismanagement,” San Diego Councilman Mark Kersey told Fox News in 2018, adding that the billions wasted on the project “could have been invested in our current infrastructure needs, such as water storage, flood control, highways and bridges.”

And this is what the "Green New Deal"  advocates nationwide to replace the need for commercial air travel!

Despite lofty campaign promises and vision, ultimately, math and economics wins.

This Train Juju has been around long enough for the primary scammers At The Top to have already greased their vig out of it.

They'll just move on to the next bright Shiney promise they can milk from here.

And  nobody will get pinched, as the records get deleted and the remainder of the money disappears.

And we will never know just how much money was wasted here in thin air of bureaucracy.

He isn't pulling the plug 100% otherwise he (CA taxpayers) would owe the Feds (President Trump) $3.5 billion...Gavin can't stomach sending Pres. Trump $3.5 billion...he might build a wall or something with it!  :nono:  ;-)  Newsom plans to build out a section of rail roadbed from Merced to Bakersfield (more likely Madera to Bako). Amtrak will probably use it to bypass freight trains on the  track they usually use (BNSF). Or it could be the most expensive bike path ever!!

This is what the brainiac AOC thinks the US looks like:

Why, a bullet train could get from the Pacific to the Atlantic in the time it would take to cross Manhattan.

He still plans to build a railway from somewhere no one wants to be to somewhere no one wants to go.

Feds need to audit this bullshit, but it will never happen because Pelosi and the other California Dems have siphonedoff to much of the money.

So today a democrat socialist in California, can't keep the trains running, since he can't even get them built?

Must divert available scarce resources to San Fran sidewalk Poop and LA Typhus.

Further restricts State troops on border duties.

Then Newsome has no right to pull the plug.  Voters approved it.  They are the only ones who can stop it.  Until then, they should live the consequences of their idiotic decision.

The voter approved $$ is gone (spent), along with most of the $3.5 billion in "stimulus" money. Prop. 1A anticipated "private investment" that never appeared. Besides, what they were building in no way resembled what was required in Prop 1A...so the voter approved Prop was violated long ago, starting with the "blended-plan" early in the process (not "high speed" after that).

I had to reread that.  Cost too much?  Too little oversight?  Not enough transparency?

Just does not seem to be something a lib ever says.

Must have been a misquote

This is an example of conservatism sometimes losing battles but ultimately winning the war. Another example is states trying to implement universal healthcare. Every one of them have had to either abandon the idea because of costs, or simply got voted down by the voters. You simply cannot defeat math or economics
