Iran will send 4,000 Revolutionary Guard troops to Syria to fight alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces, The Independent reported on Sunday.
The decision to send soldiers to Syria was taken last week prior to Friday's Iranian presidential election which saw cleric Hassan Rohani defeat a number of more conservative candidates.
The Independent quoted pro-Iranian sources as saying that Iran has proposed to open up a front against Israel on the Golan Heights as part of efforts to preserve Assad's regime in Syria.
The report comes after the US announced on Thursday that it will begin to arm the Syrian opposition in the face of evidence that Assad used chemical weapons against rebels on multiple occasions.

Choices:
1. Side with Assad and Iran
2. Side with rebels and al Qaeda
3. Stay out of it; let muslims kill muslims
* Syria has a relatively large Christian population
compared to other mid-east countries. I am led to
believe they fare better with Assad. Better, not great.

It's a no-brainer...... #3
-
Assad and most of his cabinet and advisors are Alawite. They are a very moderate form of Islam which shares much with Christianity.
At the same time, he is also a brutal and repressive dictator.
6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
-
4. Find a way to allow all Christians to either come to Europe or here, and let Muslims kill each other..

I wasn't aware about the Alawite sect of Islam..

I wasn't aware about the Alawite sect of Islam..
It's a not very large sect. Possibly because it is more peaceful.

One must argue that countries like Egypt, Libya, Syria with their respective rulers (Mubarak, Qaddafi, Assad), in spite of the effrontery to Western philosphy, were keeping the crazies under control.

Yep... you know there is a good reason you don't bother a hive of bees as long as the hive is under control.......
-
The whole Syrian thing is a proxy for an attack on Iran.

Yep! My son made the comment that countries like these need a dictator to keep them in control. The only other way is to start from scratch like we did. We are better off letting them sort out their own problems, some of which were created by outsiders who don't have a grasp about what we are up against. Do we destroy America to save the Middle East? I believe the intentions of many Muslims is to destroy America to save themselves, or as they see themselves.

and therein is the crux of the issue and why I am with people who want to just get the heck out of the Middle East.... enough is enough..... and you are right, the Brits did more damage than good in their forays on the African Continent.
