Title: Music Thread- Song Covers that are better than the original version
Post by: Wingnut on April 25, 2016, 09:16:16 pm
There is nothing wrong with the cover version of the song.  But, what exactly is the point of recreating a monumental classic virtually identical as it was? Your version will not supplant the original in cultural zeitgeist. The original was just too impactful. To the contrary, you are best off recording something obscure with minimal history.

Highly subjective but there are some notable ones.  Some original artists even remade their original be more like the cover  Like this 1st one originally by Tears for Fears:

Originally written by Russ Ballard, popularized by Head East, it was Graham Bonnet and Rainbow who made the definitive version of this song, "Since You Been Gone:"

Blinded By the Light. Originally a Springsteen song, Manfred Mann kicks it's ass and takes it's name.

Very good selection.  It also ranks near the top of the most misheard/spoken lyrics of all time!  LOL

Piece of My Heart.

Original was Janice Joplin, but Faith Hill's version just pops it better:

I like listening to foreign songs where I don't know the words sometimes.

It's funnier if I do know the words, though. This was the song "I will Survive" for the Russian version of the "Rio 2" movie.  :silly:

If she had been around in the 80's she could have been HUGE with this kind of Janet Jackson type stuff.

But I doubt she was even born before the 90's.

Better? Debatable. But this cover is AT LEAST as good
Al Green's 'Take Me To The River'. Foghat version.

And what's the only version that gets airplay? That awful POS that the Talking Heads did!

Ugh.

No offense to you, but I have had to hear that song every day at work for the past God knows how many years.

Basically I'm getting drilled with this message that there's nothing I can do about my loneliness (and I've been lonely for many years—but that's grist for another thread) when what I need is a reason for hope.

And then this blasted song comes on again and I want to bash my head into the counter!

I just sent that to my Russian speaking son.  That is HILARIOUS.

(Though the only word I can understand is the Thank you at the end!  ^-^)

Percy Grainger's adaptation of six British folk songs into his Lincolnshire Posy is to me, greater than the original stand-alone tunes

But how do you feel about Stokowski's Bach??

Bach achieved his sounds naturally, not through sonic manipulation which Stokowski was very fond of.

So you're not a fan of Switched On Bach either?  How about the Swingle Singers?   ^-^
