The Islamic State has devastated the ancient heritage of Iraq’s Christians. Many churches, some hundreds of years old, were damaged or even destroyed, along with earlier archaeological treasures such as palaces belonging to the Kings of ancient Assyria.
Here is just a snapshot of ISIS crimes against Iraq’s Christian community.

Both are atrocities.
These buildings are not just utilitarian structures,
they are works of art and historic artifacts.
They are being targeted because they are such.
Even the Muslims in the early centuries after Muhammad
did not destroy religious structures.
They claimed them and repurposed them for their own use.

Sure they did. They kept the structures that were useful to them and rendered the others unusable by anyone. I do agree that they did not have the bombs and other weapons that made destruction as easy as it is now.
