Wildfire smoke: Midwest blanketed with haze as unhealthy air heads back to Northeast

Several states in the Midwest are waking up to unhealthy air conditions as people in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast prepare for worsening air quality, weeks after the region was blanketed with an orange haze.

Air quality in Detroit, Michigan, was rated as hazardous on Wednesday morning as officials in Washington, D.C., are warning of a drop in air quality for the day.

Parts of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and western New York are seeing unhealthy air quality conditions on Wednesday morning, with the smoke from Canadian wildfires expected to travel east over the next few days.

Looks like NYC will be getting it again, starting today:

NYC set to be clouded in smoke, haze once again as Canadian wildfires rage

By Isabel Keane
June 28, 2023

Smoke and haze could cloud New York City once again Wednesday, as winds continue to propel smoke from powerful wildfires ravaging Canada into the US, forecasters said.

Forecasters said the hazy skies Wednesday into Thursday will not be as dramatic as the apocalyptic orange haze that cloaked New York City earlier this month since most of the smoke being pushed south has landed over the Great Lakes region.

“Right now air quality is good for New York City but it could possibly dip into ‘moderate’ levels,” Fox Weather Meteorologist Marissa Lautenbacher told The Post.

“People will probably notice more hazy skies, but not the smell of smoke that everybody was smelling and the complete orangeness of the sky.”

It's been thick here in the Florida of Iowa, like a light fog. You can smell it and it leaves an ashy taste on your tongue.

Occasionally we get this in summer/fall when wildfires come a knocking. Have avoided it thus far this year in Northern Bama, but dry season starts about now (but so far looking spotty rainy).
