The height of etiquette: Michelle Obama towers over Japanese emperor as she stumbles in silver stilettos while attempting awkward curtsey

Mrs Obama towered over Emperor Akihito and stumbled as she tried to bow, shake his hand and curtsey at once
She also grabbed Japan's First Lady in a hug-and-handshake combination while she was mid-bow
The awkward trip is being described as a 'makeup call' after Mrs Obama failed to accompany the President to Japan last year
Tensions are high after death threats to the U.S. Ambassador to Japan
Mrs Obama wore a green printed dress from Kenzo’s Fall 2014 collection, followed by a striking flower-print suit

Michelle Obama has had an awkward start to her visit to Japan as she was pictured towering over Emperor Akihito and stumbling as she tried to bow, shake his hand and curtsey at once.

The First Lady, dressed in a florid combination of a blazer and skirt, dwarfed the Emperor in her silver stilettos, while he maintained his composure and smiled politely. She then squatted slightly while shaking his hand, seemingly trying to disguise the difference of height between them.

Mrs Obama, who is 5ft 9in tall, also caused embarrassment earlier in the day when she grabbed Akie Abe, wife of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in a hug-and-handshake combination while the Japanese First Lady was trying to bow.

I'm going in: Michelle Obama stumbles as she attempts an awkward combination of curtsey, western handshake and Japanese bow when meeting Emperor Akihito in Tokyo. Matters were not helped by the fact that she towers over him

Just nod and smile: The Japanese Emperor is the height of politeness as he greets Mrs Obama, who squats slightly as she tries to disguise the dramatic height difference between them

Alright, I just have to say it. Stop acting like she is grossly overweight; she's not, and it's really kind of petty to continually go there. Even if she was fat (which she isn't), so what? Attack her political positions, not her physical appearance. You're doing the right wing a serious disservice with this crap.

I forget who it was who said it, some fancy English guy, I think.

But, (in trying not to appear too unkind) he said:

"She was a large woman who seemed not so much dressed, as upholstered."

She's a nasty woman, with bad intentions. As we all know, ridicule is a powerful tool. I don't see why ridicule is a tool that only the left can use.

I despise the Wookie and her effeminate man-child of a husband. I truly enjoy any ridicule of them.

Do you think swing voters that view this and other Republican forums are going to be impressed by ugly jokes and cow noises? It's about image.

Get a grip. Do you think this forum matters to any but a few? Do you think your liberal friends drop by to see what I have to say on any giving topic? Most swing voters would rather drink acid than vote Republican. And with the current lack of leadership, many former Republicans won't vote Republican either. There is a large contingent here on this very forum that likely won't vote Republican for president in 2016, if the RNC has it's way.

Real assessment: American schools have indoctrinated and mentally crippled a large portion of the under 40 population. Once Boehner, McConnell and BHO finish the amnesty dance, the chance of a Republican being elected president will be just a tick above zero.

So, you wring your hands all you want over our treatment of that heroine, that strong black woman that is likely your role model.

I'll enjoy the ridicule on the way down, as we ride this puppy into the ground.

You know, other than creating a bad image for Republicans it's also just kind of childish. I understand there are idiots on the left that did the same thing to Sarah Palin and other members of the Republican party, but that was stupid and childish of them. Do Republicans really want to do the same thing just because the Democrats do it? If it's really that important to hurl personal insults at politicians you don't like rather than addressing the weaknesses in their positions then go nuts I guess. Not that anybody cares but I'm really disappointed.

I'm afraid I don't follow.

Right wing means the people that make up the right side of politics.

Left wing means the people that make up the left side of politics.

By saying he is doing the right wing a disservice I am saying he is hindering the right wing by giving it a negative image. What is the issue here?

Oh, grow up. When I say "mooo" about this pathetic excuse for a woman, I'm commenting on her lack of grace, dignity and respect for her position as "First Lady of the United States." I am not a member of the right wing, whatever the hell that may be. I'm just an American who longs for the days when a president and his wife actually loved this nation and represented it around the world with class and dignity. Go ahead and call us names. What's the point, Dex? Do you think by calling us stupid and childish you've persuaded anyone to love or respect Obama and his lovely but equally America-hating and graceless wife?

Eat some arugula. You'll feel better. Michelle says so.

Never heard the term used disparagingly, have you?

Never heard the term used with the word "extremist" attached to it?

I just haven't seen that term used by many legitimate conservatives........  that's what the "issue" is.

I really don't care what you think about my political leaning. The term can be and is used in a way that is not disparaging. I regularly refer to the left and right wing in a way that is supposed to imply nothing more than what the definition is.

I didn't call anybody here stupid. I called something people on the left did stupid and asked if that is the example we want to follow. I guess I see how that could be stretched into me saying what you said is stupid, but even if you did that somebody can do something stupid without being stupid. I've stated enough times how I feel about Obama; save your baiting for somebody a little more susceptible to it.

I just want to say I've never claimed to be a conservative. If you absolutely must attach a political label to me it would be libertarian. I agree with almost everything Ron Paul says. I really hate labels though; they only distract from what is being said.

I used a label to reference a group of people, yes. Labels are not an absolutely bad thing, but often times and especially in regard to a specific person they are used to avoid the actual content of a thought. I did not use a label to dismiss the content of what anybody said.

Saying "Republicans" would have been a label too. It's hard to not use a label when referencing a large group of people. When I said I hate labels I was mostly referring to labels on an individual person. I said they are not an absolutely bad thing, meaning they are not bad 100% of the time. The word "absolutely" which you very conveniently left out is a very important part of what I said. Generally speaking yes, I do hate labels used on individuals for the reasons I have already mentioned above.

btw, I've never heard a libertarian use the term "right wing" either.

Stop making implications and just say what you wanted to say so I can tell you I don't care.

Dex, I think some folks still think you're a liberal troll.

Look, I agree. Going after a first lady is tacky. Traditionally that has been taboo.

But, the left invited these attacks. Let me explain.

When a Republican president is sworn in, we know what we're getting: one president whom we voted for.

But, when the left comes into office (Clinton, Obama) they gleefully announce we have a co-president (Hillary, Michelle)!

Well if the spouse is in the kitchen as copresident, then they better be ready to take the heat.

I don't think we should ridicule Obama's physical appearance either. For me it has nothing to do with their position in politics and everything to do with it not being the mature thing to do. We're all adults here; let's act like it. There are plenty of ways we can bash Obama and Michelle without attacking the way they look. They make that much easy with the way they run the country.

I've posted it here before, but this quote is something I try to live by.

"As soon as men decide that all means are permitted to fight an evil, then their good becomes indistinguishable from the evil that they set out to destroy."

My two cents worth.

She does look gargantuan in these photos. The heels were a definite mistake. However, in terms of her outfits, she is making vast improvements. The yellow, and the cheery blossom, very nice.

Clearly she is gauche and awkward, but she is giving it a decent try. At least she is not smacking gum, or taking selfies at a funeral with hot blonds, like her idiot childlike husband would do.

When it comes to the Obamas, it is too much to expect them to do anything correctly, without flaw. You have to judge the Obamas by the marker that it was not a complete disaster, or a complete fail. That is what success is, when your name is Obama.

Dexter, while I am quite certain we lie on different points of the political scale, I also want to give you some credit for the way you have held up.

Thank you Lando. You're all good people and I respect you despite any disagreements we may have.

Back to the topic at hand. Who is FLOTUS' protocol liaison?  The little details like ensuring she understood how to greet heads of state or setting her up for a photogenic meeting would be the most rudimentary of job duties.

Kind of like all the problems with the Secret Service, it seems the support staff just doesn't care. Peter Principle in the White House staff?

Alright, I just have to say it. Stop acting like she is grossly overweight; she's not, and it's really kind of petty to continually go there. Even if she was fat (which she isn't), so what? Attack her political positions, not her physical appearance. You're doing the right wing a serious disservice with this crap.

Dex....just want you to know that even though I hold tremendous respect for MusicLady and her overall POV...that I tip my hat to you for your graciousness under fire.

Your use of the term "right wing" in that context seems totally appropriate and had no malice attached.

It wasn't exactly what you would call 'withering fire,' DC. Not all that hard to 'hold up' under it.......  ^-^

That or passive-aggressive behavior...     :silly:

Doesn't she have a fashion coordinator?  A protocol expert?  She can be tall and even a little wide, but she can look appropriate for the occasion. For goodness sake can't someone stop her from these types of photos?  It's so unnecessary.   **nononono*

LOL!

Just wanted Dex to know that I understood him and didn't see any insult.

They use those terms (left and right wing) describing European politics all the time.

Yes, but in this context, the point needed to be made that the term "right wing" is used by the left as a pejorative against conservatives.

I'm sticking with that point.

One would think that Michelle Obama, as First Lady of the USA would not to around meeting world leaders with bare legs and feet...in silver heels.  Disgusting.

And, IMO, those are NOT "stiletto" heels   .

No not stilettos....I would call them pumps...I have a few that size.....my gosh she has a big foot...[no pun intended]

Stockings and pantyhose are out...bare legs in.....I solve that problem by either wearing long skirts or fancy dress slacks...

Anyone to the left of Attila is a liberal to some of us here.

Except most of Dex's positions aren't that controversial. Some are, especially regarding the Middle East, but nothing a libertarian might not say.

So on the whole what has he said that's so disturbing?

People shouldn't make fun of appearances. True, we ought not to. My mother taught me that. That's his opinion. That's not a political or policy difference, just pointing out a good character trait cultured people should aspire to.

On the other hand, Dex. It's part of human nature to poke fun, and needle, and pick at scabs. Especially at the expense of a political foe who is such a lush target.

Yep. The stilettos I have are higher and have a thinner heel. Pantyhose in or out, I would never be caught without it. But, that's just me.

Michelle Obama's Mirror, (http://www.michellesmirror.com/2015/03/a-week-of-humiliations-reflections-of.html) A Week of Humiliations: Reflections of Sista Silverheels (excerpt).
Quote
First - and worst – came BO’s humiliating loss to Bibi. No amount of money, sabotage, or fraud could pull the Israeli election out in Big Guy’s favor. ...

Then came Sista’ Silverheels’ humiliating stumble and near tumble into the arms of little Emperor Akihito:

I told her she should just take her traditional matcha green tea straight, butt I think she put a little “cream” in it anyway.

The Bang a Gong Show: Far East Version

Don’t ask why. Just take my word for it: Lady M’s trip to Japan/Cambodia reminded me of this 70’s era glam-rock mega one-hit wonder from T. Rex.

Well you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black
