One killed, several injured in Pensacola naval station shooting

A shooter has killed at least one person at a naval air station in Pensacola, Fla., CNN reported, citing authorities.
A number of others were reportedly injured in the shooting. The person who carried out the shooting has been killed, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office told WKRG.
A separate report by WEAR-TV said that there was an active shooter at a naval air station in Pensacola at 7:15 a.m.
The WEAR-TV report noted that there have been "reports of injuries."
The Pensacola News Journal reported Friday that Baptist hospital has received five patients and Sacred Heart Hospital is expecting six.

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The shooter is dead and at least 11 people were hospitalized Friday morning in a shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola.
Escambia County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Amber Southard confirmed the shooter was dead just before 8 a.m. Friday.
Five patients were accepted to Baptist Hospital, according to spokeswoman Kathy Bowers. Six were accepted to Sacred Heart Hospital.

A shooter opened fire on multiple people Friday morning at Naval Air Station Pensacola, killing at least one other person, authorities said. The shooter is dead, as well as one other fatality, the U.S. Navy has confirmed.
"One additional fatality has been confirmed. Unknown number of injured people being transferred to local hospitals," the Navy confirmed on Twitter.
At least 11 people have been taken to area hospitals, the Associated Press reports. ...

The gunman who killed at least three people and wounded seven others before being killed by deputies in a Friday morning shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola has been identified as a Saudi national and member of the Saudi Arabian military who was in the U.S. for aviation training. This is one of the reasons that President Trump among others has called for trained soldiers on-base personnel be armed, along with all soldiers at recruiting offices. They are soldiers after all, it is absurd that they are not allowed to defend themselves.
Yes, we have trained you to go overseas to jump out of aircraft into life threatening situations to kill terrorists, but we cannot allow you to hold a weapon.

A Saudi Arabian military student used a handgun to open fire on a classroom at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida early Friday, killing three and injuring eight more before he died in a shoot out with sheriff’s officers, according to Navy and local law enforcement officials.
The Navy has not identified the shooter but NAS Pensacola base commander Capt. Timothy Kinsella said during an afternoon news conference that he was a student in the Navy aviation pipeline.
“He was training in aviation,†Kinsella said.
The student was among a couple hundred international students that train at the base, which is the primary initial training stop for all Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard officers seeking to become aviators or flight officers, plus international students.
Morgan said the incident was confined to the building and the classroom.
The Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Washington, D.C., has not issued a statement about the gunman or other students at Naval Air Station Pensacola.
Saudi officials also have not answered questions submitted by Navy Times in writing this morning about the incident.
The official Saudi news agency also has remained silent about the bloodshed in Pensacola.

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, someone matching the shooter's identity had an online footprint, including a Twitter post that criticized America's support for Israel.
"O American people - I'm not against you for being American, I don't hate you because your freedoms, I hate you because every day you supporting, funding and committing crimes not only against Muslims but against humanity," the post read.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said he was "extremely concerned" by the issues raised by the shooting and called for a review of all programs that place foreign nationals with U.S. military personnel.
"Whether this individual was motivated by radical Islam or was simply mentally unstable, this was an act of terrorism," Scott said. "It's clear that we need to take steps to ensure that any and all foreign nationals are scrutinized and vetted extensively before being embedded with our American men and women in uniform."
The Department of Defense operates a robust effort to train foreign military officers, with more than 5,000 such foreign students from 153 countries in the United States, officials said.
Those foreign nationals are vetted through a screening process that includes searching databases for evidence of drug trafficking, support for terrorist activity, corruption and criminal conduct, officials said.
Pentagon officials said Shamrani's training with the U.S. military began in August 2016, and was scheduled to finish in August 2020. His coursework included English, basic aviation and initial aviation training, officials said.
It was not immediately clear whether the three deceased victims were service members or civilians. Multiple people were taken to area hospitals. Among them were two Escambia County sheriff's deputies who are expected to survive.
Baptist Health Care said it had admitted eight patients from the shooting but could not yet report on their conditions. "Our teams are treating patients and we are working with Navy personnel to communicate with family members," the hospital said in a statement.

Family members have identified Joshua Kaleb Watson, 23, a recent graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, as one of the victims of Friday’s shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola.
"Joshua Kaleb Watson saved countless lives today with his own," wrote his brother, Adam Watson, late Friday. "After being shot multiple times he made it outside and told the first response team where the shooter was and those details were invaluable.
"He died a hero and we are beyond proud but there is a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.â€

I was in Pensacola and driving by the NAS when this shit was going down. When I got to the venue I was heading to all the other attendees pretty much knew what was happening. They either had people who work at the base or were relatives. On top of that they had ties to nurses and Doctors at Sacred Heart and Baptist Hospitals were the wounded were taken. It was probably the 1st time I knew what was actually happening before the news media. Around 9 am it was pretty clear the killer was muslum scum.

Every Naval and Marine aviation student takes grief over mustaches. Tradition is to grow then during the phase ending in carrier qualification. Anyone growing one before that is just asking for the business from both instructors and students. But, the Saudis have a rep as prima donnas anyway. Let them train their own damned pilots.

Lengthy thread at Mychal Massie's facebook page. Here's a snippet of what he has related as coming from a friend who currently works at the Pentagon:
I had a group chat with about 20 officers still in the area. Friends and co-workers were exchanging information, all of them aviators, many still on lock down. Some of them were directly in charge of the response and involved in the investigation. All of this is available now in open media, but this is what I know.
The Saudi terrorist checked in on Monday and seemed normal . He held the dinner party on Thursday night with more than 10 Royal Saudi Air Force Officers in attendance. At this party, they watched videos of mass shootings, mostly Islamic propaganda. The next morning, Friday, he systematically attacked building 633 while one of his fellow officers followed and filmed, several other Saudis waited and observed the attack from a car.
The attacker started at the Quarterdeck (front desk), and the 3 killed were on duty at the time. Ensign Watson was the duty officer, was shot 5 times and still managed to call first responders and evacuate the building and personally direct them to the location of the shooter prior to dying of his wounds. The other 2 killed were also in the immediate vicinity of the quarterdeck. Many of the wounded were as well, some being wounded as they tried to climb out of windows.
Per Navy policy, none had weapons to defend themselves.
The first responders that confronted the shooter were from the local sheriff's department. Two were wounded in the gun battle, and the terrorist was killed. Three active duty Americans were dead, 8 more wounded, 2 deputies wounded. Many of the wounded were shot through the doors of classrooms on multiple floors of building 633. Most of the base remained on lockdown well into the afternoon as the base was systematically searched for the missing Saudi terrorists officers. By days end, 6 additional Saudi Arabian officers were in FBI custody, and several were at large in the community and a man-hunt is still underway.
So, over a 5 day span, the terrorist checked in, acquired a handgun with 4 extended magazines and ammunition, posted a manifesto online condemning the US as a nation of evil along Islamist and anti-Semitic lines, planned and executed his attack with at least 3 accomplices. At least 10 Saudi Military Officers knew of the plan, and either participated or did nothing to stop it. Each one of these individuals had passed the screening process to come train in the United States. That brief recount of the chain of events begs a series of questions, some of which are easier to answer than others.
Here are some of the most obvious questions, and my best effort to answer them. Was this terrorism?

Why are we training Saudis in Pensacola?
While the brightest light is on the Saudis in the program, we train aviators from multiple nations in Pensacola. Germany, Sweden, and Singapore also have a large volume of students train in Pensacola. The obvious comparison to this incident is to the fact that the majority of the 9-11 hijackers trained in Florida. It is an important distinction to note that all of those individuals were civilians and had no interaction with any military training program.
It is equally important to note that 10+ members of the Royal Saudi Air Force knew of a planned mass murder of American military, and either participated in it or agreed in principal to allow it to happen.
Saudi Arabia is currently our strongest ally in the Middle East. We base troops there, we stage equipment there, we get our fuel for operations from there. If we are going to be involved in the Middle East, we need an ally like Saudi Arabia. ...
The Saudi students have an entirely different reputation and structure to their training. While all of the other nations employ a form of meritocracy to be in the flight program, the Saudi students are typically the child of a Saudi sheik, politician, or member of a rich/important Saudi family. They all drive luxury vehicles, and flaunt their wealth to the other students and instructors. It isn't unusual to see a Saudi student wearing designer shoes that cost thousands of dollars with their uniforms instead of their issued shoes or boots.
The Saudis do not stand any of the squadron watches (Like assistant OOD (Officer of the Deck), where the flight schedule is executed), while other nations participate fully in squadron functions. ...

New details have emerged in the deadly shooting at a Florida naval base, including social media posts from the suspect that appeared to make a reference to the attack months before it happened, according to a federal report obtained by ABC News.
Mohammed Alshamrani, 21, a second lieutenant in the Saudi Air Force who authorities say killed three people and injured eight others after opening fire at the Naval Air Base Pensacola last week, wrote the phrase "the countdown has started" on Sept. 11, 2019 with no further explanation, according to a Joint Intelligence Bulletin released Friday.
