TOPEKA, Kansas – The Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., who founded a Kansas church widely known for its protests at military funerals and anti-gay sentiments, has died according to his son Tim Phelps and KSN sister station Kansas First News.
Phelps, 84, was being cared for in a Shawnee County facility, Westboro Baptist Church spokesman Steve Drain said Sunday.
Members of the Westboro church, based in Topeka, frequently protest at funerals of soldiers with signs containing messages such as “Thank God for dead soldiers,” and “Thank God for 9/11,” claiming the deaths are God’s punishment for American immorality and tolerance of homosexuality and abortion.
Westboro Baptist, a small group made mostly of Phelps’ extended family, inspired a federal law and laws in numerous states limiting picketing at funerals. But in a major free-speech ruling in 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the church and its members couldn’t be sued for monetary damages for inflicting pain on grieving families under the First Amendment.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil-rights nonprofit group, has called Westboro Baptist Church a hate group.

I don't portend to know who God hates, but I am certain that Fred is finding out....
Not sure which circle of Hell Fred belongs in but I am sure he will end up right where he belongs for eternity.....

The media will never mention that, or that he used to defend homosexuals in court. Don't forget he used to be good friends with Al Gore.
Everyone knows that the Fred Phelps Cult is nothing but a racketeering operation. They do something intentionally to piss people off, and then sue if anyone dares to "violate their rights." It has been their MO since the beginning.
However, plenty of liberal commentors on news sites refer to him as a "Tea Party" member, "Christian leader," "typical Republican", etc, etc, etc.

Wasn't he ex-communicated by his own church about a year ago? I've heard it was because some of the staff caught him playing with himself, but then I heard that wasn't true, it was really over some dispute with a member of the congregation.
Daddy of astroturf . . . saw a documentary on tv a few years ago about the WBC and he seemed totally insane to me. I've heard his health had been failing for awhile now, hope he got right with the Lord.
