Trump's son: Tax returns 'detract' from political message

By Eugene Scott, CNN

Updated 2253 GMT (0653 HKT) September 15, 2016

Washington (CNN) — Donald Trump's son has a new reason to explain why his father won't release his tax returns: They'll steal from his political message.

"Because he's got a 12,000-page tax return that would create ... financial auditors out of every person in the country asking questions that would detract from (his father's) main message," Donald Trump, Jr. told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in a piece published Wednesday.

That's a dramatic shift from the Republican nominee's longtime explanation that an   ongoing audit is preventing him from releasing his tax returns. (There are no laws barring Trump from disclosing his tax returns while he is being audited).

The comment reflects the political potency of Trump's tax returns. There are growing questions about what's in the documents, including details of investments in foreign countries. House Speaker Paul Ryan, who was the GOP's vice presidential nominee in 2012, said Thursday that presidential candidates should release their tax returns.

Audit not so much anymore.  We are seeing that Trump knows the information would kill his campaign.

Which means questions will come up at every Trump presser, every question session, and in every one of the debates.  The media will hammer home the message that Trump is hiding something.

He isn't hiding that he is hiding something anymore.  Completely out now.  They are just saying that Trump supporters will ask questions.  As they should.  He is just making excuses for himself.

I honestly, do not care about tax returns.

I will go with Donald on this one... " I work very hard to pay the least taxes I can"  . Other than that.... prove a crime or I do not care.

Perhaps it's more than he took advantage of 'tax loopholes' but other questions have come up; is he as wealthy as he says he is?  Which charities has he donated to? Does he have Russian and mob ties?

This is something that seems to become an issue every election cycle; 'they' did the same thing to Romney.

They do it every election cycle because the GOP intentionally runs candidates that have very anti conservative things in those tax returns. Like mob ties, sketchy charities and foundations, and my personal favorite, income from companies that BBQ the deadand dismembered bodies of the babies your (the candidate's) laws made dead in the first place.

When the candidate loses because they seem less than above board, the GOP then blames conservatives for the loss, the Democrats keep on keepin' on and the GOP reason to exist has been fulfilled as planned.

He's running for president and it is customary for candidates to release returns.  If he's going to work for us, we have a right to know about his personal finances.

Or don't run.

.......'they' did the same thing to Romney.

Which is a my main reason to care not.

In fact, I applaud trump essentially to telling them.. Democrats/Media/Progressives,.. to kiss his ass.

I like a lot about that POS trump, and I dislike a whole lot.

My  man ,who represents me, is Ted Cruz. trump does not get my vote until he gets Teds endorsement. An that would take trump to quit being a fascist pig... as well as many of his supporters... and quite saying they are going to destroy Ted/Me.

That is where my vote is at.

This is the bottom line.....

"Because he's got a 12,000-page tax return that would create ... financial auditors out of every person in the country asking questions that would detract from (his father's) main message," Donald Trump, Jr. told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in a piece published Wednesday.

Trump is not that confident in his supporters.  He knows that they will not like what they find.  It is obviously a huge threat to Trump.

I doubt Trump has ever told the truth in his life.  He says he is worth "x" billions and numerous money people don't believe he is worth the amount he says.  He would be caught in another lie, so those returns will never see the light of day.

I really do not think it is governments business what or where we make what.

Certainly if someone can become President without a birth certificate..... Meh.

I do not care for trump...he is a POS. But on this.. I prefer that government not  own me.

The sad thing is that his supporters are as afraid of the truth as Trump is that it get out there.

I guess if you know something is going to make you look like a slack jawed moron, you would rather not know at all.

Similarly, a Hillary indictment would detract from her "political message".

There's not much I like about Trump as I don't care much for liberalism and the progressive movement.  He talks the 'talk' but certainly has yet to walk the 'walk'. He maliciously verbally attacked Cruz and his family resulting in ultimately halting the conservative movement's ability to take a foothold in this election cycle.  There is absolutely nothing Trump can do that would convince me that he is the least bit deserving of my vote.  Trump has lost credibility and above all Trump has lost his integrity.  I don't see Cruz endorsing Trump unless Trump sincerely (with sincerely being the key word) apologized to Cruz  and his family on national television first. Then he would have to publicly promise Cruz a cabinet position.  I think Cruz would make a fantastic Secretary of State or Attorney General. Even at that, I think it's a little late for Trump to mend bridges and I'm not so sure that Cruz would give up his Senate seat. The only thing that Trump seems to be sincere about though is himself.  Trust me and believe me.

Similarly, a Hillary indictment wound detracts from her "political message".

Both sides are acting exactly alike and neither is better for doing so.

I was just reading an article that said it is possible that he has paid little to no taxes do to exceptions/exemptions for real estate.  And if he had a small tax bill then no need to give to charity.

Considering that Trump was a Democrat-supporting liberal up until the magic year of 2011....the fact that his tax records are under an 'ongoing' audit leaves one to wonder what he has done to warrant such intense investigation.  Personally, I think the voters have a right to know.  And since Trump is the only presidential candidate since the 1970's to NOT release his tax records, I'm wondering why he thinks he is so special.  And if he isn't "special"....then what is he hiding?

There was never any reason that he couldn't release them.  If he was having an audit they already have his taxes and it would do nothing to him to have the public see them.

You can write off Russian Mob Ties on your returns now? Damn that H&R Block accountant. He told me they were not deductible.

I'm guessing deferred taxes are an issue for Trump like they are for Soros.

Thanks for the compliment.

Plenty of folks here post meme shit all the time, so please jump down my throat the one time I choose to. 80% of Vulcan's posts are just meme pictures, but I guess his memes are aligned with your politics?

"I'll release my tax returns the moment Hillary releases her speeches to Goldman Sachs."

And sure, of course his tax returns will either make him look bad, or be easily spun into doing so.  Either way, not releasing them is probably the smart move.
