Virtual Biden nomination sucks drama out of Democratic convention

Democrats‘ announcement that President Joe Biden will be named their nominee for president virtually has deflated what little drama could have been expected at the Democratic National Convention.

Biden easily racked up the delegates needed to become the party’s standard-bearer by March, but the continued protest votes against him in Democratic primaries and his perceived weakness as a general election candidate left open the door to the remote possibility of a surprise challenge and even brokered convention when the party meets in Chicago in August.

On Tuesday, the Democratic National Committee opted to nominate Biden virtually in the coming weeks to ensure he makes it on the ballot in Ohio, a state with a filing deadline two weeks before the convention, but the knock-on effect of its decision is that the event will now be purely ceremonial.

Democrats had brushed off the possibility of a brokered convention in the days leading up to the DNC announcement. The president trails former President Donald Trump in most swing-state polls, in part due to concerns over his age but also an enthusiasm gap by progressive voters upset with his handling of Israel’s war in Gaza.

“No, no. No one is talking about contingency plans for President Biden,” former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said. “President Biden is going to be our nominee.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said of the notion that Biden could be replaced.

Raskin argues DOJ can force recusals of Alito, Thomas in Jan. 6 cases
by Tara Suter - 05/29/24 9:00 PM ET

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) argued that the Department of Justice (DOJ) could force the recusals of Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito in cases it is facing related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

“Everyone assumes that nothing can be done about the recusal situation because the highest court in the land has the lowest ethical standards — no binding ethics code or process outside of personal reflection,” the Maryland Democrat said in an opinion piece in The New York Times published Wednesday. “Each justice decides for him- or herself whether he or she can be impartial.”

Raskin then noted that Alito and Thomas “could choose to recuse themselves,” but that “begging them to do the right thing misses a far more effective course of action.”

“The U.S. Department of Justice — including the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, an appointed U.S. special counsel and the solicitor general, all of whom were involved in different ways in the criminal prosecutions underlying these cases and are opposing Mr. Trump’s constitutional and statutory claims — can petition the other seven justices to require Justices Alito and Thomas to recuse themselves not as a matter of grace but as a matter of law,” Raskin continued.

Alito and Thomas have faced recent calls to recuse themselves from cases related to the Jan. 6 attack due to controversies over flags reportedly flown at Alito’s houses linked to the “Stop the Steal” effort and Thomas’ wife’s reported involvement in that same effort.

Biden tells Black voters he will put progressives on Supreme Court in second term
President Biden tells Philadelphia crowd he would put progressives on the Supreme Court if a vacancy appears in the next four years

President Biden on Wednesday promised to nominate progressives to the Supreme Court if he wins a second term in the White House.

Biden made the pledge at a "Black Voters for Biden-Harris" rally in Philadelphia, where he predicted that more than one Supreme Court justice will retire in the next four years.

"The next president, they’re going to be able to appoint a couple justices, and I’ll be damned — if in fact we’re able to change some of the justices when they retire and put in really progressive judges like we’ve always had, tell me that won’t change your life," Biden told his audience.

The president's comments emphasize what is at stake in the next election for both conservatives, who have lauded their 6-3 majority on the court in recent years, and progressives who have decried landmark rulings ending federal protections for abortion and expanding gun rights.

The struggles many people are going through are the direct result of what Biden has done, though. So they are kind of aware of that, after all.  :pondering:

Trump knocks ‘naive’ Shannon Bream over Alina Habba interview
by Nick Robertson - 05/30/24 7:29 AM ET

Former President Trump labeled Fox News’s Shannon Bream as “naive” Wednesday, after she pushed back on his attorney’s assertion that his criminal hush money trial was in some way directed by the White House.

Bream said in an interview with Trump attorney and spokesperson Alina Habba that President Biden is “not responsible” for the trial, pushing back on her false claims that the case is politically organized from the top.

“I never knew Shannon Bream was so ‘naive,’” Trump said in a Truth Social post Wednesday, calling the idea that Biden isn’t involved in the case “stupid.”

“Not only is he involved, he is virtually leading it, and all of the other Trials as well — Meaning, his people, because he’s not mentally sharp enough to lead anything!” he continued. “Just take a look at the DOJ/White House Thugs involved, and everything else.”

Fox News anchor to Alina Habba: Biden ‘not responsible’ for Trump trial
by Dominick Mastrangelo - 05/29/24 5:22 PM ET

Fox News anchor and legal analyst Shannon Bream pushed back on an assertion made by Alina Habba, one of Donald Trump’s attorneys, that President Biden is responsible for the criminal charges the former president faces in New York.

“And Joe Biden unfortunately can’t really do anything in office,” Habba said as she joined Bream, the host of “Fox News Sunday” who was broadcasting for much of the afternoon from outside the Manhattan courthouse where Trump’s trial is taking place. “So he’s got to use the same means as somebody who’s just trying to have a quick slip and fall and make money. And that is, frankly, what we’re seeing right now.

“This is exactly a Biden show because he’s got to distract the American people,” Habba continued.

“But the Biden administration is not responsible for this trial,” Bream interjected.

“How can you say the Biden administration is not responsible?” Habba shot back.

“It’s a state trial,” Bream explained. “It’s [Manhattan District Attorney] Alvin Bragg. Whether you think there’s a political motive for him, it’s not connected to the DOJ. I mean, the feds passed on these election charges.”

Biden Co-Chair: Many People Aren’t ‘Aware’ of What Biden Has Done Because They’re ‘Going Through a Lot of Struggles’

Ian Hanchett 29 May 2024

On Wednesday’s edition of NBC’s “MTP Now,” Biden Campaign Co-Chair Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), who is also running for the U.S. Senate in Delaware, said that “A lot of people are going through a lot of struggles right now, coming out of the pandemic. And they are not even aware of the things that this administration has done to really uplift our communities.”

Host Peter Alexander asked, “So, Congresswoman, let me ask you specifically, then, I think the question is, if the campaign was in such good shape with black voters, as President Biden has done in the past so many times, why would it be using its most valuable resource, the President, to hold so many events, five events, targeting black voters in May of an election year?”

Blunt Rochester answered, “I think part of it is to show that we see how important that vote is. A lot of times, people feel like their vote doesn’t matter. A lot of people are going through a lot of struggles right now, coming out of the pandemic. And they are not even aware of the things that this administration has done to really uplift our communities.”

Alexander then cut in to ask, “Is that evidence of why we are seeing some of the erosion right now, the need to sort of better communicate that so they can bring those black voters back?”

Blunt Rochester responded, “Again, I think a lot of people have their own pains and things that they’re dealing with. And so, we want to make sure that we highlight the different investments that he has made, whether it is in our infrastructure and creating jobs, the lowest black unemployment rate in 50 years and probably ever, for us, investments in our black small businesses, which is why he was visiting small businesses today. When you look at the investment in education, the $16 billion for HBCUs, and also, student debt relief, which is one of the top issues that I hear about from black voters.”
