NFL's Kaepernick to be a face in Nike's 'Just Do It' campaign
Trevor Hunnicutt, Jonathan Allen, Frank McGurty
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nike Inc has chosen Colin Kaepernick, the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem as a protest against racism, as one of the faces for advertisements commemorating the 30th anniversary of its “Just Do It†slogan, a move that could draw U.S. President Donald Trump’s ire.
“Colin has been a Nike athlete since 2011,†Nike spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John said on Monday. “Colin is one of a number of athletes being featured as part of our 30th anniversary of Just Do It.â€
She said Nike unveiled the campaign last week by releasing a film featuring Serena Williams entitled “Voice of Belief.â€
The former NFL quarterback posted a black-and-white close-up of himself on Instagram and Twitter on Monday featuring the Nike logo and “Just do it†slogan along with the quote, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.†... ... Kaepernick already had a deal with Nike that was set to expire, but it was renegotiated into a multi-year deal to make him one of the faces of Nike's 30th anniversary “Just Do It†campaign, according to a person familiar with the contract. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Nike hasn't officially announced the contract.
The source says Nike will feature Kaepernick on several platforms, including billboards, television commercials and online ads. Nike also will create an apparel line for Kaepernick and contribute to his Know Your Rights charity. ...

Nike taps Kaepernick as face of new ‘Just Do It’ ad
By Brett Samuels - 09/03/18 05:02 PM EDT
Nike unveiled a new ad on Monday for the 30th anniversary of its "Just Do It" campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, who has remained unsigned by an NFL team for nearly two years.
The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback tweeted an image from the new campaign featuring a close-up photo of his face, accompanied by the words "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything."

Kaepernick might end up being the only professional athlete in history to parley being benched for poor performance into a multi million dollar endorsement contract.

Nike seems to like people with no class.
Maybe it sells tennies?
-
I guess to Nike, soldiers didn’t sacrifice enough to be worthy of an ad campaign. Pat Tillman anyone?

If Trump isn’t president, no way Nike does this. He started kneeling in pre-season 2016. It is now 2018.

Hey @Nike, I don’t give a shit if you want to make Kapernick the new “face†of your brand. But, I do give a shit that he wore socks depicting cops as pigs and praises a murderous dictator. He’s a martyr, not a hero. 🇺🇸

Hey @Kaepernick7 when will you speak out on @nike paying overseas workers less than $3 a day to make its shoes? Look forward to it given you value politics over all commerce and business interests. Open forum on @outkick for you as always to discuss. Thanks.
â€If Nike had wanted to go full social justice warrior they could have gone with Aly Raisman as a thirty year spokesperson and sent a powerful message embraced by virtually everyone. Kaepernick is a disaster. Fallout will be massive.

Nike's Kaepernick Ad Has Cost The Company Over $3 Billion So Far
by Tyler Durden
Tue, 09/04/2018 - 08:23
Since announcing their new advertising campaign will be led by Colin Kaepernick, the social media backlash has dominated the virtue-signaling efforts we presume they hoped for.
With images of Nike apparel and footwear being burned and real sacrifice being discussed, it appears investors are growing disillusioned as NFL fans as Nike shares are down 2.4% in the pre-market. ... Nike selected the controversial former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the new face of the athletic wear company’s “Just Do It†campaign, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
“Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. #JustDoIt,†Kaepernick, who has been with Nike since 2011 though hasn’t played on an NFL team since the 2016 season, posted on Twitter on Monday afternoon.
The now-free agent quarterback, who led the Niners to Super Bowl XLVII where they fell to the Baltimore Ravens, stirred up controversy when he began kneeling during the playing of the national anthem prior to NFL games, beginning in the summer of 2016, to protest racial injustices against the African-American community.
Many other players have joined the movement since it began, which eventually led to NFL owners voting to enact a national anthem policy for the 2018 season. Under the new guidelines announced in May, players and others associated with the NFL who are on the sideline must stand during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner, while those who choose not to stand must remain in the locker room.

Yep. I find these kind of things rather interesting.
Think about the last Nike spokesperson you can remember. Past 10 years, 20 years? Probably Michael Jordon (obviously much deserved). He was their spokesperson 30 years ago.
Now, this nobody who sucked at football and hasn't played in 2 years, is the face of every other post on Facebook and twitter and headlining news outlets. We are feeding this monster and giving him all this attention. We are, by our actions, telling him that he is important.
Michael Jordon he is not.
-
Nike got caught up in that ad scandal over in England as well, per running "thug-looking models" for a commercial. Guess what? I guess, that's their target audience in part and they might do well with it and I don't mean a knock on that. Nike shoes are big deals, a story was posted how some Chinese were marketing fake Nike shoes and it involved millions of dollars but it does seem they are appealing to a specific audience. I guess, people have been killed over nike mechandise, sneakers and such. Who needs them really? I got some of their clothes some time ago on discount or maybe as used but I might not ever wear those either with stuff like this.
-
They just went with the cheapest guy with at least some kind of name value, in America that is. I doubt anybody overseas has a clue who this guy is.
But by doing this, they have declared themselves to be anti-Cop, anti-White, and anti-America. Not sure that is going to work out to their benefit in the long run.

It's so funny you say that....today I was dreaming of Michael Jordan publicly announcing his complete break with Nike. And speaking about Ranger Tillman as the REAL face of any campaign.
Can you imagine their stock then?
Or even what it could mean culturally?

If you look back at what Jordin did as well, he didn't make symbolic stances. If he saw something that needed fixing, he put his own money down, not his knee. The list of charities that Michael Jordon gave to (and not paltry amounts) or started is longer than the ACA legislation.

Good, you got their target audience.
Bill Bowerman, co-founded Nike for track, he coached Prefontaine out in Oregon, so it is sad to see a company make these kinds of moves. However, this is in America they are doing this. They are multi-national so other parts of the world may not have a clue as to what is going on in the USA.
Bowerman, helped start Nike in his garage more or less I thought, being track coach for the Oregon Ducks, so it is disheartening for this to go this way, it is all about money.

I remember. It's too bad that some of these athlete/activitsts that think they're walking in his footsteps are just stomping on his legacy.
Most of them need to be more like Charles Barkley and adopt the "I'm not a role model" mentality.

The Nike shoes are not of very great quality. I'd rather buy a new pair of New Balance or Adidas shoes and donate those to a homeless veteran. To whom, exactly, were you addressing the "you claim to care about" comment, by the way?

The 'you' was a general statement towards those who may burn or trash their shoes out of protest.
I've had the exact opposite results from Nike. They have lasted forever for me. (my current pair are probably 10 years old).

My husband is a marathon runner. He always wore Nike Pegasus shoes, but he noticed in recent years that the quality of the Pegasus model had declined substantially. He now wears Adidas. He also used to work for Nike and knows Phil Knight - and has absolutely no respect for him. Nike is not exactly the most ethical corporation in America, shall we say.
