Title: Any Old Farts Here?😏
Post by: mrclose on February 12, 2024, 01:56:18 am
Yep, according to the world, I am an old codger!

As I always say: "You have to grow older but .. you never have to Grow Up!"

Now, the question: Any of you remember these great songs and the era?
I miss it all!

Well, to be honest, I don't recognize a few, but most of them I do.  Yay!!!  I'm officially an old fart.  So that means I don't need to take any crappola off of any one; "Go ahead and make my day"!

No codger here.   I was a pre-geezer when I joined TBR but now I have graduated to a full on geezer.

Ok ... since .... you gave me a 'list', I couldn't resist.  I picked one out that I haven't heard in a very, very long time and I don't believe it's been played in the 'Music' thread.

"Day After Day" - Badfinger

Not enough Country on that list, or I would be rockin it. Right age, wrong genre.

And I'm a duffer. I have a few years before I am a geezer... I dunno where 'old fart' is on the duffer/geezer timeline.

I probably recognized 65 or 70 of those just from the title. Coming in at #75:

I first heard Malo at a high school dance in 1971 or 1972, IIRC. Strangely, one of my running community FB friends was a member of Malo (now a member of Momotombo).

Don't remember them when they were new, well before my time... but I listened to a good chunk of that on the oldies/classic hits stations for 20 years. (Though thanks to a robust radio blackout, I didn't discover the Osmonds until a few years ago.)

Does that make me an honorary old fart?

I'm working on walking farts.  At Walmart.

My Dad and his better-than-thou wife would go shopping at the Wall or grocery store. He would  wait for the perfect time when the aisle was crowded, he was close to the end of the aisle and she was close, but not too close...and then "do the deed".  He'd then duck around the corner and make it seem like her event. He found this enormously amusing.

I guess you have to make your own fun sometimes.

I recall wearing; bell bottom jeans, hip huggers, mini and maxi skirts, platform shoes, moccasins, suede leather jackets with fringe, blue jean or corduroy jackets and blazers and large hooped earrings.   Pretty much a cross between Janis Joplin and Twiggy.

Well, I had a strict mother as well.  I wasn't allowed to wear blue jeans to school. That's where the maxi coat that I had came in handy.  I'd roll up my jeans under my coat and put heels on and then take heels off on the bus and put on my moccasins that I hid in my purse. All was fine until the little goody two shoes neighbor that lived next store told on me.  Ugh ... just thinking about her.

By the next year I think she gave up on that idea but I had to pay for the jeans myself.  No problem.  I babysat and saved money.  Jeans were only $5.00 a pair at the local headshop.

By the next year I think she gave up on that idea but I had to pay for the jeans myself.  No problem.  I babysat and saved money.  Jeans were only $5.00 a pair at the local headshop.

I couldn't even do that...Catholic schools with boxy uniforms with blazers... *****rollingeyes*****

Well as far as 70's fashion goes, I was a fan of halter tops myself.  :smokin:

They were well named because if the girl had the goods to wear them it'd pretty much halt any red blooded American male in his tracks.

Add: I think they were officially called tube tops, but we called them halter tops here.

At the public school I went to halter tops and tube tops were not allowed. I lived up north and it was too cold out anyways till the summer months. My summer attire was mostly a bikini top or halter top and cut-off blue jean shorts.

Halter tops were more like wearing a scarf or bandana that tied at the neck and then either tied at the back at the mid waist or to the waist and tube tops didn't have ties.

I'm such an old fart, the first artist that comes to mind when I hear the title "Puppy Love" isn't Donny Osmond. That artist is _______  _______. (<--- who's old enough to remember?)

As an aside, I can sing and probably play every song by Kingston Trio by heart.

I remember all of them too.  But IMO only 12 of them are what I woould call "rock"

@catfish1957

Those are likely my least favorite. Of the songs on this list, I have several 45s and one album (Nilsson). My preferences from this list were the wildly disrespected disco songs. Bill Withers (both songs), Staple Singers, Al Green, even Joe Tex. These songs were on the chart when I was hitting the private clubs in Houston. Dancing was such a happy place for me.

As someone else said, there weren't enough country songs on the list, but that's another place you could find me -- at the dance halls.

I'm guessing I wouldn't have run into you in either of those places?  333cleo (I never danced like an Egyptian, but it's the only dancing icon I could find. Work with me.)

"... But I could feel the way I do, and still be on the wagon... All I need is one of your smiles, sunshine of your eyes oh me oh my..."

Hey!  I was just contemplating if I’ll ever do another Best of the Decade survey ever again….

I used to do this periodically over the years at TOS.  Increasingly unwelcome, I don’t even know if I feel like setting it up again.  Lots of work on FR (user-unfriendly posting) besides the new survey method.

You all seem to talk music a lot.  It’s fun if I can gather even 40 people to vote on music surveys.  Not sure I could do it here if not active enough.

If anyone is interested my next would be the ‘60s.  Last on FR was ‘50s.  I like to go in order and even it out per what I did in past.

No, I’m not quite in the “old” zone yet.  Just always loved so much music!

Aw I ain't sayin a pretty girl couldn't drag me in there @berdie , but it ain't my druthers. I'd be a fish out of water. As close as I ever came to something you could wear in a Disco was a long maroon suit coat that I had that was all bedazzled. The cowgirls fell over for that suit, me in jeans, a saddled shirt, with my Sunday Tony's all shined up. I used to clean up fair when I still shaved my face. Still not the sort of thing that wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb in the city.

As far as growin old... That's still there in Country... Just have em play a two-step or a waltz, or a stroll... There's plenty for old folks to do at a country dance.... A hillbilly dance (blue grass), even more.  happy77

I ain't been up the canyon in a while, but I hear the Dew Drop closed up... All that's left of my old haunts is the Blue Moon and the Hilltop out west of town. What a beautiful voice and person...I'll admit, this metalhead sang along with her songs.

Here's some ol' fart big band swing music for those who like dancing. The real thing or a cover... take your pick. I'll take both.

On the subject of old farts and why I assumed I was one, I've got a little story to tell that you might remember.

In the olden days when Dan Patrick ran the Houston talk radio market, we had it good here. We could listen to Rush live at 11 on 950 AM and catch it again on 700 AM (KSEV?) at 2 p.m. I was spoiled to this because I would get interrupted at work during Rush's show, and it afforded me the opportunity to hear what I'd missed.

My world took a hit when Dan left or restructured or whatever he did. We no longer had the rerun and, IIRC, Dan didn't call any of the shots anymore. Eventually some new owners/managers moved in and things really started changing. A lot of us were irked and weighed in. The new suits didn't appreciate that we didn't appreciate them, so they ragged on us. Someone referred to the previous format as "Old Fart radio." I'd be willing to bet it was Michael Berry, but I don't know that for sure. It does sound very Michael Berry-ish. BTW, you could tell that the new suits were so unfamiliar with Houston. I remember one traffic report when the reporter said there was heavy traffic at (whatever) Street and OST. The goober pronounced OST so that it rhymed with toast. Old Fart radio, my Texas tuches!

When he's focused on current events as opposed to jibber-jabber, he's really good. Unfortunately, Rush can never be equaled. Like you, I'm not a Clay and Buck fan. I don't know how that decision was ever made.

Kevin Price (  Kevin is now here (https://priceofbusiness.com/) ) was Mike's partner on the show in the early days of KSEV.  After the Radio gig ended Mike went on to become President of the International Bible Society (now Biblica) and held that post for years. Last time I saw him he was really showing his age. Happens to all of us eventually.

I listen to classic rock as a rule. At one time (and maybe still)  there was a  Houston station that played classic C&W. I really enjoyed that when I drove that direction.

Of course, I also listen to classical, jazz, Big Band on my home stereo. Anything but rap or opera.

I was ready to correct you on your choice because  the ONLY group that played/sang disco music that was tolerable was the BeeGees, and that was only because they weren't really a disco group.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered who you named.

Not that I was ever temped to start wearing high  heels and white suits, though. I have always been more of a country, rock, and blues guy than anything else. Not only better music, but I didn't have to buy  any  costumes.

My tasks were mostly maintaining our yard and the exterior paint on the house. When I was in the 6th grade my dad took me over to my grandpa's and told me to cut the huge limb off the mulberry tree that crossed into the neighbor's yard. He had rented a chainsaw for me to use. Once I cut it, I had to go over the chainlink fence and cut that limb into pieces small enough to lift over the fence and carry to the street. I whacked and bundled the small limbs using a handmade machete, like a Condor Makara, but made from a saw blade. That was until that blade glanced off a limb and the blade tip cut thru my thumb. My task was almost done, but went to a  neighbor to get a band ade, but she took me to the hospital for stitches. That doctor made me scrub all that tree sap off my hand before he stitched me up. That cut opened  a week later when the baseball coach at school said for me to bat. One swing is all it took. I think some of those stitches didn't even go from one side of the cut to the other side.

LOL!  I was referring to the band.  But it's true, the nation has slipped a ling way from when it was "good."  Was.

The BeeGees were great, because they had already made their oats in the 60's.

The other day I learned Warren Zevon wrote Werewolves of London about Barry Gibb.  Seems the BeeGee's were touring in England And warren saw them and thought who's this hairy gent with the perfect hair!

Other web sites offer a different explanation.

I can't say that I like Roy in my youth. But when I became older I recognized his talent and learned to appreciate and love his voice. With age comes wisdom.

What was the question again?

The question was: are you going to do something fun on Friday night? And said, yep. I'm going to watch some dance videos. That way it'll keep my mind off the Astros game.  8888crybaby

I can't remember why I walked from the living room to the kitchen these days.  And you want me to dance?   Are the Cubs on?

Depends (undergarments)... Were you wearing pants? Because that's the thing... A little later, riding around the yard on the garden tractor and it's like... "Oh yeah... Pants." Then you have to stop the dang tractor find somewhere to set down your beer, and go get pants.

Then there you are again, in the kitchen thinking "Why did I come in here again?"

Yeah... That never happens to me.

All the Hollywood Heroes which you grew up loving thinking they were Godlike, one of mine was Leonard Nimoy, watching them die off one by one is strange. When I was born I was in Germany with a father in the Army, went to preschool there. Eddie Arnold (make the world go away), and Johnny Horton (North to Alaska, Sinking of the Bismarck, The Battle of New Orleans) these are my very first nascent memories when I was just a larva.

Apparently the man from U.N.C.L.E. was a thing at the time. I only know this because father kept giving me Man from U.N.C.L.E. toys, even though I had no clue what it was or what it was about. I still have no idea what the show is about. I should prolly look it up.

That is all. That is me going as deep as I can go in to way-back machine.

That push/pull at 1:19 was pretty bad arse. Great dance. Lol, they would be pulling me off the floor if I tried that stunt now days... Lets just say my get off the ground level ain't what it used to be... I do like to dance, the wife, not so much.

@Sighlass

Yes, I loved that step. After so much exposure in recent years to various dance moves (thanks to DWTS), we don't often get to see new and unique ones. It's always fun to see a new and clever one -- event if we couldn't possibly execute it ourselves.
