HAVANA: Raúl Castro, Cuba’s 95-year-old former president and last surviving architect of the Castro regime, is reportedly gravely ill following an apparent cerebrovascular event, according to multiple Spanish-language reports emerging Tuesday.
There has been no official announcement from the Cuban government confirming that Castro suffered a stroke, was hospitalized, or has died.
But the reports are accompanied by a troubling development: rumors of preparations for Castro’s funeral began circulating days before today’s reports of his deteriorating condition.
A purported Cuban government document dated August 26 has circulated through Cuban exile media. The document allegedly outlines preparations for Castro’s death, including a period of national mourning, cremation, public homage in Havana, and a military funeral procession.
The document has not been independently authenticated.
That makes it evidence of a rumor, not evidence of a death.
But the timing is difficult to ignore.
Reports of the alleged funeral preparations surfaced before today’s reports that Castro is critically ill. That raises an obvious question: Did someone know that Raúl Castro was dying before the news reached the public?
There is no verified answer.
Castro’s recent public absence has added to the speculation. On July 26, he failed to appear at Cuba’s annual Moncada anniversary ceremony for the first time in at least three decades. President Miguel Díaz-Canel read a message from him instead. His last known public appearances were in June and May.
Now, reports from Cuba say his health has sharply deteriorated.
Some accounts circulating Tuesday claim that Castro suffered a stroke several days ago and is receiving intensive medical treatment. Those details remain unconfirmed by Havana.
Raúl Castro is not being reported here as dead.
At this hour, the most defensible conclusion is that the former Cuban leader is reportedly in extremely serious condition, while the Cuban government has yet to publicly explain what is happening.
The silence from Havana is becoming part of the story.
Raúl Castro’s death would represent more than the passing of an elderly former president. He is the last living member of the Castro leadership that seized power in 1959 and shaped Cuba for nearly seven decades.
If the funeral document circulating in exile media proves authentic, the implications are considerably larger.
It would mean preparations for the end of the Castro era were underway before the public was told Raúl Castro was seriously ill.
For now, however, that remains an unanswered question.
The Last Wire is monitoring developments.
