We do have a wood stove and plenty of wood. I still don't think it would keep us sufficiently warm all by itself. Temps around zero are not uncommon.

We lived in MI and temps plummet below zero at times. Our house was about 1,500 square ft., and it kept us warm enough -- we also ran the fan on the heater to circulate the air once in awhile and to warm up the basement a bit. Obviously without electricity that wouldn't be an option.
I see more of an advantage of living in a cooler climate; in the winter you're able to keep any perishable food in the snow and melting snow for water. (As a side story - one xmas I put out cranberry salad outside to keep cool and went out to get it later and the darn dog obviously loved it!) Summer months are general cool enough with lower humidity.
Anyways as a positive you have a wood stove and plenty of wood which obviously is better than no wood stove and no wood. Some nights I used to sleep in front of the stove -- I loved the warmth of the dry heat. Too hot for my hubby and heck the kids were little and they were comfortable in flannel jammies and blankets.

Our problem is that the living room is too open and the house too large for one stove to fully heat. It's very warm upstairs whenever we have the stove going, though. We really need to downsize.

When I was young, we all just stood around the potbellied stove and pretended to be on a rotisserie.
There was no heat at all in bedrooms but we had plenty of quilts.

overhead fans to push the heat back down (reversed from summer setting). A means to move the air from upstairs to downstairs (air handler) providing the upstairs can be shut off from downstairs.
