Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at age 99, the royal family announced Friday.
Philip and the queen were married for more than 70 years, making him the longest-serving spouse of a reigning British monarch. He was the oldest-ever male member of the British royal family.

It is wonderful that Prince Philip got to celebrate another Easter with his family. Too bad he didn't get to see his grandson and great-grandson on that day as well and didn't get to see them before he passed.

he Queen will now enter an eight-day period of mourning following the death of her beloved husband Prince Philip.
Buckingham Palace today confirmed the Duke of Edinburgh passed away this morning at Windsor Castle, aged 99.
In the next month, the royal family will enter a period of mourning while a ceremonial funeral is arranged and a burial.
In a break with tradition, there is not due to be a lying in state for the Duke of Edinburgh.
During a royal lying in state, the coffin is draped in a royal flag, usually a personal standard, and rests on a catafalque – a decorated platform, covered in purple cloth, flanked by military guard around the clock.

Prince Harry’s return to the UK for his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral will be a pivotal moment for a divided Royal Family still nursing deep wounds over his and Meghan’s bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.
Harry will be attending the event at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, most likely next week, and although there has been no word on whether heavily-pregnant Meghan would join him, it is believed unlikely in the circumstances.
Harry is likely to make the journey to London by private jet from his home near Los Angeles and it is understood he may be permitted to use a diplomatic exemption to waive the normal Covid quarantine rules applying to flights from the USA.
There has not yet been an official statement from the couple on Philip's death.
It has been reported that Harry was already largely self-isolating at the £11m mansion near Santa Barbara from when his grandfather entered hospital.

Prince Harry has spoken to senior members of the Royal Family as he plans his return to Britain for Prince Philip’s funeral- but pregnant Meghan Markle will stay in the US.
The Duke of Sussex is said to be making arrangements for his first trip home since the pair quit royal life and moved out to California, as well as their interview with Oprah last month.
Meghan is expected to skip the journey and stay in their California home as she is pregnant with the couple’s second child.
Sources say Prince Harry has already spoken to family members including Prince Charles, Beatrice and Eugenie, according to the Mirror.
The source said: 'He said he wants to be with everyone and was already making arrangements to come home.'
Earlier today the couple paid a short tribute to Prince Philip following news of the Duke of Edinburgh's death.

Saying that to your grandfather who has just passed who you've known and been around all your life? That's just plain cold!
Maybe Harry never had a close relationship with the rest of the family? Does he have resentment and jealously because he was treated differently than William because he was the 2nd son born to Charles and Diana or did he perceive he was treated differently? I can understand how he might feel left out, but the royal line of succession has been in place for centuries. Does the Queen have the authority to change that? Maybe Diana had requested that change?
Then there is also rumor of Harry being the result of an affair that Diana had?

LONDON (AP) — Gun salutes across the U.K., in Commonwealth countries and at sea are marking the death of Britain’s Prince Philip on Saturday as military leaders honor the former naval officer and husband of Queen Elizabeth II.
Batteries of cannons in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and other cities fired 41 rounds at one-minute intervals starting at midday. The Australian Defense Force offered its salute at 5 p.m. local time outside Parliament House in Canberra, and New Zealand planned to give an artillery tribute on Sunday.

His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the able and admired consort of Queen Elizabeth II, has passed at the age of 99. Britain is honoring him with 41-gun salutes, flotillas, special lighting, eight days of mourning, and tributes from all over. The New York Times has a great photo spread of his well-lived life. The Daily Mail came out with its fattest edition ever.
This Brazilian soccer player's tribute is beautiful -- there at the moment of his own soccer victory, he chose instead of honor Prince Philip. These non-British soccer players honored him, too. That's so different from the disrespect for the U.S. coming out of the million-dollar ball players that's going on over here.
President Trump, unlike the Brezhnevian-Chavista election thief who succeeded him and made one of the classiest tributes of all.

Plenty of eyes went to him, but knowing he was dying and had the public's sympathy, the Markle team later denied that the alleged family racist was the prince or the queen, putting the onus on the rest of the family, which few, in Britain at least, believed, according to Gardiner.
Who's been the face of the British royal family lately? Why, none other than Meghan Markle and her adjunct, the wretched Prince Harry, who follows her around and goes along with her whims like a beagle. Prince Philip was said to be the most upset with Prince Harry for walking out on his royal duty and with Meghan for leading him. Prince Philip, after all, had given up his promising career as a military man to be the queen's consort, and embraced that role like the giant he was. He was asking of Harry and Meghan only what he had asked of himself, and consistently lived by example. Meghan, though, wasn't about to give up her actress career for a mere life as a duchess and its "boring" royal-family duties. She reported said it "wasn't working for me" and dragged Harry off to the celebrity lifestyle and red carpets back in Los Angeles.

“Although the ceremonial arrangements are reduced, the occasion will still celebrate and recognize the duke’s life and his more than 70 years of service to the Queen, the UK and the Commonwealth,†a palace spokesman said Saturday while speaking on condition of anonymity in line with policy.
Prince Harry, Philip’s grandson who stepped away from royal duties last year and now lives in California, will attend the service along with other members of the royal family. His wife, the duchess of Sussex, who is pregnant, has been advised by her doctor not to attend.
Palace officials said the ceremony would be conducted strictly in line with the British government’s COVID-19 guidelines, which restrict the number of people attending funerals to 30. They declined to say whether the royal family would be required to wear masks.

When Queen Elizabeth passes, it will really truly be the end of an era, maybe even the end of Western Civilization as we know it, she is the last holdout. And the only Queen the vast majority of people on this planet have ever known. I think even a lot of people who aren't fans of the Monarchy are going to be shaken when she passes, I know I will.

Well, Harry is going to show up, I expected him to stay behind with Markle. Of course a lot of posters in her called it correctly; she won't attend and is using the excuse of her pregnancy. I'm not buying it, but I am glad that she won't be there.
Now is not the time, but maybe his brother or his father can talk some sense into him or at least make it known that what he's done to the family is absolutely not acceptable disgraces the entire royal family.
I read that Markle decided that she didn't want Archie to have a title; it had nothing to do with skin color as the tabloids have expressed. I didn't watch the Oprah interview so I don't know what exactly was stated by her and Harry.
If I were Harry, I wouldn't return. Leave her goldigging grubby little hands behind. The checks can be direct deposited into an account which is all she's wanted anyways.

It would serve him right, but I've read that the Queen wants him to attend. Harry is a horse's azz, but the family needs to all be together right now and support the Queen and show unity. I am truly glad as most must be in the family that his trashy wife won't be attending.

Prince William today praised his grandfather Prince Philip's lifetime of service to 'Queen, country and Commonwealth' before his brother Prince Harry gave a bold and contrasting tribute, declaring: 'He was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right 'til the end'.
The Duke of Sussex spoke out about the Duke of Edinburgh's death hours after landing at Heathrow without his pregnant wife Meghan Markle ahead of Saturday's funeral on his first visit to Britain since the couple's bombshell Oprah interview.
At a time when the relationship between the brothers is strained, William released his official memorial via Buckingham Palace but Harry used the Archewell charity he set up with his wife Meghan in California 30 minutes later.
Harry said: 'My grandfather was a man of service, honour and great humour. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm-and also because you never knew what he might say next. He has been a rock for Her Majesty The Queen with unparalleled devotion, by her side for 73 years of marriage, and while I could go on, I know that right now he would say to all of us, beer in hand, "Oh do get on with it!".'
And as it was revealed Harry is unlikely to wear an Army uniform at his grandfather's funeral in Windsor after being stripped of his military roles by the Queen, he ended by quoting the motto of the Royal Marines.
Harry's statement has been seen as a return to his cheeky prince persona of the past, at a time where critics have accused him of following his wife Meghan Markle's 'woke' ways since they married in 2017.
He is staying at Frogmore Cottage, the couple's former home in the grounds of Windsor Castle. They spent £2.4m of taxpayers' money refurbing it but then gave it back after emigrating to the US.
Prince William's significantly more sombre tribute said he would miss his 'extraordinary' and 'mischievous' grandfather whose 99-year life was 'defined by service'. He focused on duty, continuing Philip's work and the need to support the Queen - at a time when his brother quit as a frontline royal and emigrated to the United States.
The Duke of Cambridge also released a new photograph, taken by his wife Kate, of a then two-year-old Prince George with his great-grandfather in one of his beloved carriages on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk in 2015.
Harry's return to the UK ahead of Saturday's funeral will be the first opportunity to reunite with Prince William and his father Prince Charles, who is said to be 'looking forward' to a reunion with his son. It came as:

Prince Philip was Prince of Denmark and Prince of Greece by birth, his parents being in the two countries' royal families. He was born in Greece and did not become a British citizen until his marriage to the future Queen Elizabeth II was in the works. It was at the request of the King of Greece that Philip completed his training to become a Royal Navy officer. In WW2 Phillip served on battleship HMS Ramillies, a couple of County class heavy cruisers, battleship HMS Valiant, and in several WW1 vintage V and W class destroyers. Buckingham Palace has revealed the 30 guests who will be attending Prince Philip's funeral at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on Saturday.
Coronavirus restrictions meant the ceremony has had to be scaled down, with only 30 guests allowed in contrast with the estimated 800 originally planned to attend.

Princes William, Harry won’t walk side-by-side at funeral

LONDON (AP) — Prince William and Prince Harry won’t walk side-by-side Saturday as they follow their grandfather’s coffin into the church ahead of Prince Philip’s funeral, minimizing the chances of any awkward moments between the brothers who are grappling with strained relations since Harry’s decision to step away from royal duties last year.
Buckingham Palace on Thursday released the broad outlines of the funeral program for Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, who died April 9 at 99. The palace revealed that William and Harry’s cousin, Peter Phillips, will walk between the princes as they escort the coffin to St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, west of London.
Prince Charles, the heir to the throne and the father of the princes, together with his sister, Princess Anne, will lead the 15-member procession.
The brothers had been closely watched as Saturday’s funeral will almost certainly remind the pair of their shared grief at another royal funeral more than two decades ago. As young boys, both walked behind their mother Princess Diana’s coffin in 1997 in London in a ceremony watched around the world.
Palace officials refused to comment when asked whether the positioning of William and Harry was an effort to minimize family tensions, which have grown after Harry and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, gave an explosive interview to Oprah Winfrey that suggested an unnamed member of the royal family had made a racist comment to Harry before the birth of their child Archie.
Meghan, who is pregnant and living in California with Harry, is not coming to the funeral on the advice of her doctor.

Prince Philip will be buried Saturday — then moved when the Queen dies
After Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday at St. George’s Chapel on the Windsor Castle grounds, his casket will be lowered into an opening in the stone floor — but the so-called Royal Vault will not be his final resting place.
Instead, Philip will be disinterred and moved when Queen Elizabeth, his wife of 73 years, dies, the Telegraph reported Thursday.
Elizabeth will be interred elsewhere in the same stately Gothic church, in a vault in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, named after her father, who was buried there in 1952, the UK newspaper reported.
That vault also holds the remains of Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret, who died in 2002, and of their mother, who died just months later, also in 2002.
Only after Elizabeth’s death will Philip — required by centuries of protocol to follow two paces behind the Queen in any public procession — be disinterred and buried at her side.

I have a friend who plays them, and did so at her aunt's funeral a couple years ago (her aunt was a longtime stalwart of our local Republican party). It was lovely.
I was running errands while this was livestreamed, but have looked at a couple of videos on YouTube, including the queen arriving, getting out of her car and walking into the church. She's looking her years, and it was a sad reminder of my own mother, who died at 89.

Just gonna show my ignorance here, but so be it, I honestly didn't know Elizabeth II was married. I figured her husband would be the king and that she was widowed. That is how little I keep up with the silly monarchy. I did enjoy the pictures and somewhat abating my naivete with the posts here from everyone.

CNN posted many pictures of the funeral; what a sad day for England and especially for the Queen.
I couldn't help but notice the Duchess of Cambridge and how absolutely regal she looked and she wore the pearl choker that the Queen had given to Diana and then to her.
They had to of course again mention Markle who couldn't make it because she was too far along in her pregnancy and her doctor advised against it. B.S. Just a few weeks ago she trashed the royal family along with her trashy husband and had announced she was pregnant. I'm glad she stayed behind.
Condolences to the Queen and the Royal family. All that attended the funeral displayed 'royalty' and a regal presence.

The Queen stated awhile ago that she would continue on with her duties and Charles has been waiting to take the throne for a very long time and I don't see him abdicating his position to William. Longevity certainly runs in their genes, so I see William and Kate waiting at least another 20 years.

Prince William asked for his cousin Peter Phillips to walk between him and Prince Harry during the funeral cortege, according to reports, suggesting there were continued strained relations following Meghan and Harry’s accusations-charged interview.
Sources speaking to the Mail on Sunday claimed Prince William the Duke of Cambridge made the request, with a friend of Prince Harry allegedly telling the tabloid: “He’s just doing what he’s told and getting on with it.â€
Peter Phillips, 43, is the son of Anne, Princess Royal and Mark Phillips and is the oldest grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Media reported that he was also one of the couple’s favourite grandchildren, likely guaranteeing his place so far up in the funeral procession. However, at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother in 2002, Harry and William were seen walking shoulder to shoulder with Peter to Harry’s left, further suggesting Peter’s placement at his grandfather’s funeral was an intentional division of the brothers.
There appeared to be less tension between Harry and William after the funeral ceremony; however, sources speaking to the Mail said that Harry had experienced “a great deal of frostiness†from members of the Royal Family, because there remains “a deep sense of protection towards the Queen and resentment towards Harry. There is little sympathy for him after what he and Meghan said on Oprah.â€
“They are still very upset… They all think he has behaved appallingly,†the source added.
