In my cat rescue work I have to deal with city shelters that euthanize due to space limitations. My group tries to save as many cats as we can -- but our space and volunteer force is limited. We try to find fosters or space at other no-kill shelters in the area. But then we run up against the same damn problem: space limitation, not enough people to adopt or fosters to care for the animals until they can be adopted. And so the cats die. As many as 50 a day at city shelters.
I try not to think about it. Because when I do, I break down. The cats need us, and we're failing them.
Thanks, famous. If only every cat lover would adopt one cat (and spay/neuter, of course) we could make the problem of cat overpopulation go away. It breaks my heart to see these beautiful, loving creatures destroyed. I just try to focus on the ones we can save and try not to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem. Thank God for dedicated volunteers. Some of my colleagues are amazing. You would not believe how much of their time and money they give for the cats. They are true saviors.
