Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis fired from previous Atlanta job after botched sex crimes probe

Isabel Vincent  |  January 28, 2023  |  1:26pm

The chief of police in Memphis in charge of the five officers who fatally beat and tasered motorist Tyre Nichols was fired from a previous law enforcement job after a botched probe.

Cerelyn “CJ” Davis became the first female police chief in Memphis’ history in 2021 and is currently in the international spotlight after five cops brutally beat Tyre Nichols.

She was fired from the Atlanta police department in 2008 for her alleged involvement in a sex crimes investigation into the husband of an Atlanta police sergeant, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Two detectives accused Davis of telling them not to investigate Terrill Marion Crane, who was married to sergeant Tonya Crane after the police department obtained photos of him with underage girls.

A federal grand jury later indicted Terrill Crane on child pornography.  .  .

How did she rise from fired-in-disgrace police Lt. to Chief of Police in 13 years?

At least two out of the five Memphis ex-officers accused of murdering #TyreeNichols were hired after the department loosened its education requirements. As police departments struggle to get enough recruits, some have lowered applicant qualifications.

Memphis cops charged in Tyre Nichols murder hired after PD relaxed job requirements

At least two out of of five Memphis police officers charged with murder in the fatal beatdown of Tyre Nichols joined the force after the department relaxed its hiring requirements.

Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley both joined the Memphis Police Department in Aug. 2020, NBC News reported, more than two years after the department dramatically loosened the education qualifications to become an officer.

Recruits no longer needed an associate’s degree or 54 college credit hours to join the force, and could get by with five years of work experience, Action 5 reported.

Loosening the required qualifications however means that the department is ultimately getting “less desirable” job candidates, Mike Alcazar, an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a retired NYPD detective, told The Post.

“They’re desperate. They want police officers,” Alcazar said. “They’re going through it, they check off some boxes, saying, ‘Ok, they’re good enough, get them on.” ...

When you lower standards, you are not allowed to complain about the quality of the the people you hire.

This is going to go to other inner-city police departments as they struggle to retain and recruit quality candidates. More and more cities will lower their standards for hiring resulting in further deterioration of the quality of inner city police departments.

I know I would not be a police officer in this day and age. I would also discouraged loved ones from becoming a cop.

We are investigating a tip that 3 of the 5 officers in the Memphis PD beating of Tyre Nichols were members of the Vice Lords gang and under their direction.
Other gang directed beatings
were reportedly found on their phones.
Recordings as proof of carrying out the beating.

All of the cops involved had been with Memphis PD 2-5 years each, which coincides with the exodus of White cops and the city’s stated push to hire majority (exclusively) black officers.

Update: Allegedly there is a Bonding company in Chattanooga that many believe is financially backed by the Vice Lords. Huge bonds are being made by this one company for this certain gang.
They have members working as jail officers as well. It seems they have people everywhere.

Officers With Troubling Backgrounds Hired After Memphis Police Department Lowered Standards

Townhall Media/Julio Rosas
The death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, a black man, after his altercation with police during a traffic stop has thrust a discussion of police reform back into the news cycle. The five officers involved, who were also black, were fired and each charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. Another narrative, though, ought to be examining how it was that these officers were allowed on the force in the first place. As a report from the New York Post highlighted, that may have to do with relaxed standards.

According to the report, two of the officers, Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley, both joined in August 2020, which was over two years after the department loosened education qualifications to become an officer. Among such loosened requirements included no longer needing an associate's degree or 54 college credit hours to join the force. Officers could also get hired with five years of work experience.

Cops Accused of Murder in Death of Tyre Nichols Were Hired After PD Relaxed Job Requirements, Launched 'Diversity' Push

At least two out of five Memphis police officers charged with murder in the death of Tyre Nichols joined the force after the department relaxed hiring standards and launched a push to improve the department's "diversity" under the promise that residents having cops "who look like them and understand their culture" would serve to "defuse" conflicts without the need for "physical force."

From The New York Post, "Memphis cops charged in Tyre Nichols murder hired after PD relaxed job requirements":

At least two out of five Memphis police officers charged with murder in the fatal beatdown of Tyre Nichols joined the force after the department relaxed its hiring requirements.

Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley both joined the Memphis Police Department in Aug. 2020, NBC News reported, more than two years after the department dramatically loosened the education qualifications to become an officer.

This happened during the Vietnam Era in large cities that had to compete with the military draft to find new recruits.  They lowered their standards to fill their ranks.
