Quote
A federal judge in New York City has issued a New Year's Eve order for the “compassionate release” of Lynne F. Stewart. Stewart is the former defense lawyer convicted of aiding and abetting her convicted terrorist client, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind Egyptian cleric who was convicted in 1995 of conspiring to blow up landmarks in New York City.

Her “aiding and abetting” consisted of smuggling messages from imprisoned Abdel Rahman in prison to his followers in Egypt. Stewart was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison, and has been incarcerated at the Federal Medical Center-Carswell, in Fort Worth, as reported by CNN.

Amy Goodman's “Democracy Now!” reports that the judge's “compassionate release” order is in recognition of Stewart's advanced aged and precipitously failing health: terminal breast cancer which has metastasized throughout her body, leaving her with about 18 months to live.

Stewart, 74, was convicted in 2005, and has been appealing her sentence in one form or another ever since
