Tillerson buys $5.6M home blocks from Obamas, Ivanka Trump: report
By Mark Hensch - 02/22/17 05:11 PM EST
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set to be neighbors with the Obamas and a first daughter.
Tillerson earlier this month purchased a $5.6 million home in Washington’s Kalorama neighborhood, Washingtonian reported Wednesday.
The house is a four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom Colonial Revival, the report said, citing a source with knowledge of the transaction and property records.

Dude's got to live somewhere.
-
If he's got the money, good for him. I think it's insane but if he's good with it, more power to him.
-
I know how Tillerson can afford it, but how can the Obamas?

Same way any other criminal does.

This is a great way to hide some of that Exon Golden parachute money from the taxman.

The Obamas are renting.

Or .. to find a place to live for the next four years in a high security DC neighborhood.

@IsailedawayfromFR
The Obamas are RENTING, NOT BUYING.

Okay, explain the tax avoidance angle.

Wouldn't a Real Estate Investment negate the Capital Gains tax, just a little?

@truth_seeker
I simply asked you if you could explain the angle, since you implied there was one.
Based on what I know about taxes, no. A payout realized from a parachute would not be offset, by a real estate purchase.
Since he is quite wealthy, he needs diverse buckets in which to store his wealth. In recent years (since 2006) buying property has been a good investment. But now might be another peak of the market.
He will later pay taxes from "realized" gains, from both securities and real properties. Some of the costs of maintaining those investments, will offset the gains, if any.
I'm not a tax attorney, so get professional advice. Since he is quite wealthy, he can afford the best tax advice and investment options that there is/are.

Explain how that one works Jackson Hewitt?
-
I can't explain it and granted $5.4M is a drop in the bucket for someone that just got a $180M parachute and I don't begrudge him for that AND more importantly I slept in a Holiday Inn Express last year.
-
Speaking of a drop in the bucket, his house is modest in comparison to others in the neighborhood.

Tillerson had to leave a Dallas area home to an area that is 4 -6 X cost per comparable amenities.
Props to him for that sacrifice.
I turned down 4 promotions in my career for that reason.

My father, a medium residential builder, said an "consultant" was anybody over 100 miles from home, with a briefcase.
You know, the bank wouldn't loan you money for your project, without an expensive "consultant," and their written analysis.

You are aware that a "Golden Parachute" is when an executive gets a big payout when a company is taken over, right? Otherwise it seems that your incorrect usage of the term is strictly because you are a Commie Pinko bastard who is bitter about the 1%.
BTW, Tillerson did quite well keeping my Exxon stock price going up. Seems to me that he deserved his compensation.

Granted @Frank Cannon I was throwing around 'Golden Parachute' rather loosely but to call me a commie pinko bastard would have hurt my feelings until I considered the source of said insult and then I felt rather tingy in my left leg.

I didn't exactly call you a Commie Pinko bastard. I gave you a choice between that or being illiterate. I thought that was kinda white of me.

So many news stories these days seem to inspire the same response from me, to-wit, "so what?"

Are you out of your mind?!?!?!?! A man bought a house here. Let me repeat: A MAN BOUGHT A HOUSE!!!! Don't you understand the ramifications of this? Our whole geopolitical weltanschauung will never be the same.
Let me sum this up by reminding you that a man.......bought a house.
