Yahoo.....
Bassmasters hasn't updated for 2017, but just saw that my little fishing spot (185,000 ac) was the first to win top lake back to back.
Comments? Omissions?

I expected that to be Toledo Bend. We sold our lakefront property there last year, not too far from Many, LA.

The NE Coves? Wow, maybe some of the best fishing there.
-
The bass (and other warm water fish) tend to get bigger down south but we've got lots of them here in the north.

We had ~50 acres at:

You can see the cleared hay fields on the map, about the center of the property.
-
Most of these are large lakes of several hundred acres or more.
Its funny that I never really think about the great lakes for bass fishing but I have seen some quiet reedy coves that are probably excellent for bass.

Beautiful plot. Even better spectacular, Personal peninsula on Toledo Bend..... It doesn't get any better than that.

We had plans for a weekend cabin and eventual retirement place. Started with a camping trailer.
But then we got into horses and rodeo. The one way +4 hour drive made that impossible to keep up with.

I dunno what is a fair size down south... But up here, 5 lbs is a pretty good fish, for a large mouth. I am pretty sure I could and have beat the state record (8lb 8oz), but 6-10 lb are exceedingly rare. Especially since the northern pike invasion.

5 lbs is a really nice largemouth here in Michigan however we can catch salmon and musky in the 50 lb range.

We've got big rainbow, and mackinaw... and now monster pike too. My best day fishing ever was pike... just past hangover, till just before dinner, caught 250 lbs of pike between the two of us, and the smallest one was 25 lbs.
Used to have some whopper bull trout (Dolly Varden), but the fish and game let micinae shrimp loose in the lake, and killed em dang near off, along with the salmon. The rivers used to run red with salmon, and now they're almost gone.

Yeah, alright... but outside of stock ponds, wild fish, what's a nice size? We'll keep em at 2.5, maybe 3 lbs... A five pounder is a nice fish. bigger than that is somewhat hard to come by.

I believe 14 inches is legal for largemouth in Michigan these days but I think that size limits are often foolish.
I know of lakes where you can catch 10 inch bass one after the other all day long. The only way you'll ever get bigger bass in those lakes is by taking more of the smaller ones.
Haymarsh Lake in Michigan had a special no size limit rule for pike for a matter of years to produce bigger pike.

I don't know how you don't get bigger pike. they are huge here. Nothing competes with em. I think the only reason the trout aren't losing ground is because they are fast and wide bodied, so they can turn. The torpedo sails right on by. But everything else is getting decimated. squaw, whitefish, Bass, perch, sunfish, bluegill... All the slow water fish are getting hard to find. Even the crawdads.

About once or twice a year I spout off about buying a lake home. The conversation always ends with wife ... Which hospital should the ambulance take you? Jasper? Hemphill?, Leesville? DeRidder?

We used to have a beach house (Surfside, Texas). The maintenance in that abusive environment convinced us never again. The idea of lake house became more appealing with the water, easier maintenance and few crowds (at least at Toledo Bend).
I recognize what she is saying. But I suspect for me, the tranquility would do more for my health than a nearby big city.

I've got the lakeside tranquility of a tiny town (Pop 75ish) combined with urban (Pop 30,000) conveniences and job about 20 minutes away.

And if you like eating fish, but not fishing so much, you need a well trained dog.
