Nation's bacon reserves hit 50-year low as prices rise
Pig farmers can't keep up with the world's sizzling appetite
By Cameron Knight
Cincinnati Enquirer.
The country's bacon reserves are at the lowest levels in half a century.
In other words, pig farmers can't keep up with the world's sizzling appetite for those fatty, smoky strips of sheer eating pleasure.
The Ohio Pork Council, a Columbus-based non-profit, reported Tuesday that demand for frozen pork belly, frequently made into bacon, is outpacing supply.
“Today’s pig farmers are setting historic records by producing more pigs than ever,” said Rich Deaton, president of the organization. “Yet our reserves are still depleting.”
There are literally not enough little piggies going to market.

This frightens me on a level you cannot imagine. Us fatties love our pork.

To Hell with the cabinet and SCOTUS.
THIS IS IMPORTANT!
What's President Trump doing about this?
-
We should take to the streets in protest.

@Weird Tolkienish Figure
OH, MY GOD! Why isn't this article on the top of this website? Everyone get a pig and raise it for market. When I was growing up, my father would get two pigs and we had a pig pen at the back of the property. In the fall, he and men helpers, would slaughter the pigs. I was not allowed back there to see that part. It was my job, as a kid, to turn the grinder as my Mom made sausage. The hams and bacon were put in a smoke room we had outside. I grew up having bacon with eggs for breakfast, plus home made biscuits.
I cannot live well without bacon - it's part of my DNA. Someone call Trump so he can do something worthwhile, write an executive order starting pig raising across the nation, something like if you raise pigs, you don't have to pay income tax. SAVE THE BACON!

Whatever the DoD is up to here, I approve.
Or perhaps the CIA has finally taken up my idea for a new enhanced interrogation technique, bacon boarding. Effective against terrorists, yummy for the innocents.

I've actually noticed some good sales on premium brand bacon the last 6 months. Usually it's $6-7 a pound. I have been getting it around $4.

Same here..we have 3 families in our food deal. We buy one cow and one pig each year and split each 3 ways.. pick up the meat at the packing house. Vacuum pack much of it-takes a whole day.
Saves big bucks. was worried about electrical cost but electric bill did not go up that much.
4 years ago we did not have a generator and power went out for 4-5 day and lost most of it.oh well. We now have automatic back up generator and a portable one.

I've had that before. It would have been good if it weren't for the ice cream.

OK! I'll take your word on it cause I know you NEVER lie!

The headline is backward.

What -- "Demand and supply" economics isn't a thing?

What -- "Demand and supply" economics isn't a thing?
It's a process. Piglets don't become bacon immediately. It's impossible to know what next years demand will be.
-

It is correct either way, or can be correct either way. If prices rise, say because demand has changed for extrinsic reasons, then reserves will drop as more suppliers put a greater percentage of their output into the market instead of reserving it.
-

It's not impossible to have a pretty good idea what next years demand will be. If it were, then raising pigs would be a crap shoot and few farmers would do it, leading to much higher prices.
-
Does anyone make bacon ice cream?
My brother does. Do you want me to get his recipe?

I was just funnin' ya.
But in the unlamented language of an endless other thread, even if piglets aren't bacon now, they have the potential to become bacon....

We used to have a beach house. One of the fridge/freezers died. My wife went for visit while I was working too many hours. Give the stench and the amount of maggots, it had to have been dead for a couple weeks. It was probably the only weekend I was glad I didn't go with her.
We didn't even consider trying to reuse it.
