A site called Liberty News (http://www.libertynews.com/2014/05/breaking-huge-explosion-in-iran-reports-suggest-may-be-nuclear-in-origin-all-roads-blocked-within-2km-radius/) reports:

UPDATE 7:18 AM EST 05/07/14: The AP is reporting there are multiple deaths and unconfirmed local reports suggest there are at least 50 deaths with many more injured. Fox News is finally reporting on the explosion, but hasn’t yet updated their story with the AP’s new update confirming loss of life. Multiple sources say the depot has long been suspected of containing nuclear facilities. Iran has sealed off the entire area and is controlling information about the explosion.

05/06/14: Via Gateway Pundit we’re learning about a massive explosion that just rocked Qazvin, a city about 100 miles north of Tehran. The INN reports the blast may be related to nuclear activity in Iran.

An immense explosion has been heard throughout the northern Iranian city of Qazvin, semi-official Fars news agency reported, and many casualties are expected from the blast.

Around 1.1 million people live in the city, which is located about 100 miles north of Tehran.

The blast may be related to nuclear development in Iran, according to the Los Angeles Times. Iranian officials in the past have strongly denied claims by Mujahedin Khalq Organization, or MKO, a cult-like Iranian exile group, that it has a secret nuclear enrichment facility in Abyek, near the major city, according to the daily.
Other news sources report only an explosion. Iranian officials claim there have been no casualties:

Large explosion rocks northern Iranian city

Associated Press

A heavy explosion rocked an industrial city in northern Iran on Tuesday, state television said, saying that no one has been reported killed so far.

It citied Governor Saeed Mirbaha as saying there were no deaths in the explosion, but firemen and rescue workers have intensified efforts to control a raging fire that has covered the sky in a large part of Qazvin city.

The city's emergency department said two rescuers had been badly injured from smoke inhalation.

Earlier, the semi-official Fars news agency said the explosion happened in a wood and oil storage facility, leaving nearly 50 people injured -- many in serious condition. Many cargo depots are located in the city, some 80 miles west of the capital, Tehran.

Fars also said police have closed off roads to the area where the explosion took place, in an old neighborhood. ...

An explosion at a machine-oil depot in western Iran caused a roaring blaze that firefighters were able to bring under control only after several hours, local authorities said on Wednesday.

The fire caused widespread damage at the facility in Qazvin city, but there were no fatalities, officials said.

The provincial governor told IRNA news agency that some people were hospitalised for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The area around the facility was evacuated due to the danger of possible further explosions, including from an endangered 18,000-litre storage tank.

There was no information yet about the cause of the explosion.

Qazvin, Iran – Large Explosion Rocks Iranian Industrial City; Conflicted Reports Of Injuries
Yesterday  6:19 PM by JP Newsroom

A heavy explosion rocked an industrial city in northern Iran on Tuesday, Iranian state television said, saying that no one has been reported killed so far, according to AP.

A Pakistani News agency, however, cited unconfirmed local report that as many as 50 people are feared dead and hundreds injured in a huge explosion that ripped through Iran’s Qazvin city. The authorities expect the casualties to rise, Iranian media reported.

The blaze engulfed the city in a cloud of smoke. Roads leading to the site of the fire within a 2km radius have been closed off and people evacuated, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.

The fire has been burning for more than three hours, according to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA). Despite the efforts of firefighters, the situation is not yet under control. Local media has suggested that a nearby oil depot could be at risk.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the city might also be home to a secret nuclear facility. According to their report Iranian officials in the past had strongly denied claims by “a cult-like” group of Iranian exiles called Mujahedin Khalq Organization, or MKO, who claim there is a secret nuclear enrichment facility in Abyek, in Qazvin.

According to the Times, the MKO has ties to “neoconservative opponents” of Iran’s nuclear program in Washington.

So it either was or wasn't nuclear, and there were or were not casualties. You read it here, folks!  :pondering:

GOOD question.

If it were a nuke we'd know by now. They have a very distinct profile on seismographs and it's not something you can exactly keep quiet. Far more likely that an armory went up.

If it was nuclear in origin air samples in the area would prove or disprove that theory. Also, a flash would be detected by one of our space-based nuclear sensors it would prove or disprove that something had happened.

the seismographics would also indicate nuclear or non-nuclear.

You are correct. There's actually a whole network of 500 seismograph stations around the world. Also, it's possible to "hide" a nuclear blast, for instance by detonating it in a tremendous underground cavity, which decreases the effects on the ground because the blast's energy goes into compressing all that gas in the huge hole. These limitations in the seismograph system make atmospheric testing a necessary component in the detection system.

Was it a strike against a nuclear enrichment facility?  I think that would be the operative question.

It could be.
