It's getting to be that time of year again, so I figured it was time to reboot the football thread. NFL preseason is underway, college starts this weekend. As always, this will be open as a catch-all for discussion of any level of the game.
-
(sigh)
I thought we were over this, but I guess I have to iterate this again:
If your sole purpose of posting on this thread is to whine about how you're "not going to watch those whiny kneelers," then please just don't post. You wouldn't walk into a room, unzip your drawers, take a leak on the floor and leave, would you? Well, that's what you do when you make those kinds of posts. This is not an airport. You don't have to announce your departures, so bye, Felicia.
Sincerely,
Your mostly-friendly sports board moderator

Every time the BILLS would score a TD, they'd play that over the sound system.

I'm truly baffled by the hype there is around the Jets and Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers is 40 years old. He hasn't won a playoff game in a decade. He went 8–9 last season, the same 8–9 record that convinced Tom Brady to finally retire in Tampa Bay. Plus he's clearly not right in the head.
Yet this is the guy that's supposed to surpass Josh Allen and the Bills for the division lead? I mean, I think Miami is a bigger threat to that (assuming Tua doesn't get scrambled brains). They're at least a solid wild card team. New England appears to be heading into the sunset.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL...WEEK 1
Mad Dog has the BILLS at 7-1 entering week 9 vs. BENGALS.
Smith says 6-2 but 6-3 after week 9.
Seems to me that Allen is going to HAVE to target "The Captain" a lot more in the future rather than running around trying to make a highlight film.
It's better for his health, too!
-
Agreed, @jmyrlefuller
Rodgers is not the cure for the Jets' woes.
-
First week of College football was a snoozer to me. Hope it picks up this week.
-
WVU vs. Penn State tonight.
We've enjoyed watching a few local high school games lately. Last night, both of our alma maters were on TV, and both won.

Most of the games usually are. These first few weeks are when most of the big schools schedule their cupcake opponents to run up their records. So you see a lot of blowouts. It's basically preseason, unless you're one of the cupcake opponents, then it's the highlight of your season, even if you get predictably crushed as the cost of that hefty payout.

It's more noticeable in college hoops...Georgetown University would play nobody but scrub opponents for the 1st month of their season in order to raise their national ranking. University of Maryland did it too!

Yeah, they're pretty good this year. WVU is more my team - parents and husband are alumni. I don't expect much of the Mountaineers, however. Joining the Big12 was a huge mistake.
-
So... you bank your team on a 39-year-old QB. You get a half-dozen prime time games, most of which are too early to be flexed out, on your schedule. That QB goes down with a season-ending injury a few plays into Game 1. Solution?
At least for the networks...
You get the biggest pop star in America to start dating a football player and cause a distraction for the game.

The 15-yd penalty didn't help either. The proper defensive response on any last second hail mary play is to blitz. The WRs need at least five seconds to make it down field. So don't give the QB that much time to throw.

Social Media Calls Out The Refs For “Rigging” Eagles-Bills
Game After Controversial Game-Changing Call (VIDEO)

NFL fans were outraged after watching the Eagles get what they believed was a very favorable call against the Bills during their clash on Sunday.
The refs absurdly called intentional grounding against Josh Allen after he got taken down by Haason Reddick in the second quarter. The tackle screamed horse-collar, considering the fact that the quarterback’s jersey ended up getting torn.

FSU got screwed. And I say that as an Alabama fan. In the end, it is entirely possible that a not-undefeated team wins the college playoffs. And FSU as the undefeated champion of a major conference will not end up #1.

I'll tell you this... I'd rather see Kyle Shanahan get $50M per year than any professional athlete on the field.
What is it that Shanahan has, that can make Brock Purdy a superstar quarterback?
Are you telling me that Opee Dildox could just "Run the 49er offense"?
He's either damned lucky in his draft picks/trades...or he knows where the light switch is inside a QB's head!
-
Shanahan has had two good years in his career. And he isn't the QB coach. He sucked in Washington. And he cost the Falcons a Superbowl.

BILLS (9-6) win 24-22 vs. CHARGERS (5-10)
Bills boost playoff chances with late victory vs. Chargers

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The Buffalo Bills defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24-22 to keep their bid for the playoffs alive and well at SoFi Stadium on Saturday.
The Chargers, playing their first game since firing coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco last week, got five field goals from Cameron Dicker and briefly took the lead late in the fourth quarter. But a Tyler Bass field goal with 28 seconds left sealed the win for Buffalo.
The victory moved the Bills to 9-6 on the season with two crucial games to play against the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. The Chargers dropped to 5-10.

Bills’ Deonte Harty Shares 3-Word Response to Wild Punt Return TD
Deonte Harty had one of the biggest plays of the Buffalo Bills‘ season on Sunday, returning a punt for a franchise-record 96 yards for a game-tying touchdown against the Miami Dolphins.
The big play helped shift momentum toward the Bills after a mistake-filled first half, pushing them to a division-clinching 21-14 win.
But after the game, an exuberant Harty could not tell reporters exactly what happened on the play.
“I blacked out,” Harty said, WKBW’s Matt Bove on X.
https://heavy.com/sports/buffalo-bills/bills-deonte-harty-punt-return-blacked-out/ (https://heavy.com/sports/buffalo-bills/bills-deonte-harty-punt-return-blacked-out/)
“I can’t tell you what happened,” Harty said, via The Associated Press. “I’d just seen a crease. I hit it. And the next thing you know, I was free.”
Harty’s punt return gave the Bills an important spark. The team held the Dolphins on the next possession then took the lead on an Allen touchdown pass to tight end Dawson Knox. The defense that held the Dolphins scoreless for the second half then iced the game with a late interception of Tua Tagovailoa.

NFL playoff games should NOT be played in outdoor stadiums when the temperature is ZERO or below!
It's no different than having thoroughbred horses running on unsafe surfaces...it's stupid and a hazard.
Especially when they have changed the game trying to protect players with no helmet-to-helmet contact and other illegal contact.
ENOUGH!! Postpone the games until the temperature rises.
-
Tell the Packers that...lolololol.
@Jack Russell
Understand you point, but players today earn in 1 year what Bart Starr made his entire career.
Heck...the wide receivers and lineman probably do.
You don't play 18 weeks dealing with players' injuries, etc., to reach the playoffs to have the weather dictate the quality of the sport.
...just an opinion.

As the 49ers take the week off to see who they'll play next week, we take time to look back at MVP candidate Christian McCaffrey tying AL Bundy's long standing record for touchdowns in a single game earlier this year.
Polk High's all time rushing leader, also known for his sales of women's shoes, congratulated CMC after the game.
"The best piece of advice I could give him is to never get married" said Bundy.
Bundy's record has stood since 1966.
