Pelosi's archbishop calls for Communion to be withheld from public figures supporting abortion rights
By Joseph Choi - 05/03/21 11:51 AM EDT

The archbishop of San Francisco, Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone, is calling for Holy Communion to be withheld from Catholics who support abortion rights, which may cause some friction in his congregation, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is one of his parishioners.

"[T]hose who reject the teaching of the Church on the sanctity of human life and those who do not seek to live in accordance with that teaching should not receive the Eucharist," Cordileone wrote in his statement, which is dated May 1.

Cordileone noted that the 50th anniversary of the landmark "Roe v. Wade" decision is coming up in 2023.

"Abortion is the axe laid to the roots of the tree of human rights: when our culture encourages the violation of life at its youngest and most vulnerable condition, other ethical norms cannot stand for long," Cordileone wrote.

"The Church’s teaching and discipline on worthiness to receive Holy Communion has been consistent throughout her history, going back to the very beginning," he wrote.

My bet is she won't even care or she'll try to lay down the gauntlet against the Church.

While probably not at the cathedral on Cathedral Hill, I'm sure many priests in SF would fight each other for the "privilege" of giving communion to Pelosi in defiance of the Archbishop.

The Church ain't what it used to be.

Vatican to US bishops: Not so fast on Biden and communion

In Germany, the Vatican has a fight on its hands over radical progressives in open defiance to Pope Francis. The Congregation for the Defense of Faith wants to nip another potential division in the bud in the US, this time over a conservative push to put teeth in Catholic teaching on abortion. CDF prefect Cardinal Luis Ladaria sent a letter to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops warning them to proceed cautiously — and only in unity — on access to the Eucharist and abortion policy.

Any new policy, Ladaria strongly advises, would have to apply to all Catholics, not just prominent public figures:

Teddy the Snorkel is laughing his ... off. I'd gladly be set straight by a Catholic, but it seems to me that Joe Biden being given the Eucharist is scandal (the theological term) of national scale, while abortion supporter Joe Schmoe from Kokomo being given the Eucharist would probably not even be scandal of city-wide scope. So, while both should be refused the Eucharist, prominent public figures should be given scrutiny proportional to their prominence, their visibility.

I'm for banning them all, but those who are carrying the standard of defiance should be first.
