MSNBC Led Fox by 1100% Among Black Primetime Demo Viewers in 2013

In the cable news ratings race for 2013, Fox News was the clear winner, with MSNBC and CNN duking it out to spin the Silver Medal round, but there’s on category in which MSNBC achieved a level of dominance that none of its competitors can touch. In the weekday prime daypart (8 pm-11 pm, Monday through Friday), MSNBC led its competitors by country miles with African American viewers in the key 25-54 year-old demographic. For the same time slot and age demo, CNN held the edge with Hispanic viewers, in a much more level field.

2012 saw MSNBC achieve stunning growth in its already-large black audience, and in this year’s annual ratings memo, the network announced its continued success with a single line:

2013 is the fourth consecutive year MSNBC primetime is #1 among cable news nets among African-American viewers with both A25-54 and Total viewers.

But a deeper look at the numbers, from Nielsen Media Research, shows a level of domination that their memo doesn’t quite convey. Here’s how the numbers break down:

It's difficult to measure this comprehensively, because Pew doesn’t normally break out its news interest crosstabs by race, unless there’s a black-skewing story, or three, in the news. However, in a June study, black people showed more interest than whites in every story in the survey, with the exception of the Supreme Court’s marriage equality rulings, where interest was equal. In 2013, black people made up about 19% of the primetime cable news audience in the 25-54 year-old demo, about 150% of their representation in the U.S. population.

Is anyone surprised that a demographic that votes 90% or more for Democrats watches PMSNBC?
