Title: Who has the Best Fish Sandwich?
Post by: Wingnut on August 30, 2019, 09:57:02 pm
Screw the chicken sandwich...lets talk fish!

In what has now become a well-worn piece of fast food legend, the birth of the drive-thru fish sandwich almost never happened. And just like the pop-top can, the hot dog, and the rubber boot, we have a small town in Ohio to thank for this rather fishy invention.

The year was 1959, and Cincinnati-area McDonald's franchisee Lou Groen had a major problem: his new business simply wasn't driving the revenue he expected. Groen suspected that the area's 87 percent Catholic population was a factor — they weren't visiting his humble hamburger stand on Fridays and during Lent, when Catholics traditionally forgo meat.

Groen had an idea for creating an alternative fish-based sandwich that would appeal to locals, and in the early days of the McDonald's corporation, franchisees could simply pick up the phone and speak to Ray Kroc directly.

According to the Smithsonian, Kroc initially hated the idea of "[stinking up his stores] with the smell of fish." In 1962, Kroc's counter offer was the ill-fated "Hula Burger," which featured a wildly undesirable slice of grilled pineapple with cheese on a bun. After testing both concepts, the newly-minted  "Filet-O-Fish" was the clear winner, and the product became a bonafide hit for McDonald's, eventually selling 300 million of the sandwiches each year.

In the nearly 60 years since the invention of the Filet-O-Fish, fast food fried fish sandwiches have become big business. But which chain does it the best?

Grouper sandwich at Crabby's Beachwalk in Clearwater Beach.  Served fried, grilled, blackened or Caribbean style.

Yeah, I know, it's not fast food and it isn't processed.  But once you have it, you won't want McDonalds.

I am the first McDonald's vote - And while I have not had one in many, many years, I must admit that my own fish sandwich is patterned after the simplicity of the Fillet-O-Fish, a truth that forever stopped me from buying fish sticks and Horton fish patties.

Yes, my efforts to mimic McDonald's Fillet-O-Fish brought me to breaded Alaskan cod which, for ease of use and superior taste replaced all pre-manufactured fish products, to include the Fillet-O-Fish itself.

Credit where it's due.

I voted Burger King, it's passable as edible.  I just buy the filets in a bag at the frozen food sextion and slap with horseradish sauce in between my annual visit to Burger King (4 blocks away).   Someone needs to start an Enchilada Poll.

Good, but there's better.  A bar across from the arena in the Channelside area of Tampa used to have the best ever.  The breading had wheat/bran flakes (Wheaties?) and thinly sliced almonds.  These days it's probably Skipper's.

I just looked at Skipper's menu online.  Smoked gator ribs.  Hmm.  Gonna have to try that next week.

And by the way... It ALL pales compared to my locally caught Kokanee salmon, fried in butter/cast iron laid out open face on a bed of lettuce, Greek yogurt based tartar sauce, and a big slice of tomato on top... all on grilled sourdough.

You lose.

That's too bad.  I liked that place but I also understand economics.  Hooters probably made them an offer they couldn't refuse.

I keep the fixins around for pizza all the time...
Can't keep kosher (turkey) Italian sausage around in the freezer - it will burn in a month or two... so when I get it I fry it up right away, with onion and g. and r. peppers, and maybe a half of a Jalapeno... Then I can bag all that up in a zippy and it will freeze and keep just fine...

And I buy canned tomato sauce in a half-can, so it ain't nothing to crack one of them open, and throw in some garlic, basil, and oregano, and worry it up right in the can (use the rest on toast with eggs tomorrow)

So basically, I just make bannock (indian fry) bread, roll it out dang flat, and throw it in the cast iron.... Fry it up till I can flip it, then throw on the frozen fixins and some mozzarella, and toss the whole works, pan and all into the oven for a bit...

It ain't great, but it ain't bad. Surely better than freezer pizza by a long shot...
The thing I am missing is a pizza dough that I can freeze already shaped...

I haven't had the nerve to try it.  It's a pretty simple recipe that sounds deelish if you like Ramen (I do).

Calories for Ramen are crazy high for Carbs.  Almost no fat but lotsa salt.  For a package it's 380 Cal, 1,500mg Sodium.

Just had some fish spaghetti last week. It was fantastic.
Make spaghetti with pesto, add a few a few fried or baked fish fillets, and that's it.

888high58888  I have eaten there and they have some decent food.  I most confess though, I absolutely love grouper and was about the only fish that I did eat -- but grouper and other fish may have Ciguatera and Scombroid bacteria/poisoning and if ingested by humans can last up to months or even years, especially if you have a weakened immune system or are elderly.  As many hurricanes that we have had stirring up the waters lately and contaminants that are in our waters; no thank you!  I no longer eat fish, except on occasion I do eat canned tuna.

NOPE... That'd be me...

Home fried hash browns, sausage patty, 2 over easy eggs... all glued together with american and gruyer cheese, inside two slices of fat-sliced vienna white, pan fried garlic bread... Pan fried onion and green pepper, and there's a mustard/garlic/green onion aioli in there somewhere too... FANTASTIC...  the egg gravy made the whole thing!
But I will need a shower before I go anywhere... I am wearing almost as much as I ate.

Me too. I am also a fish person. Man does not live by bread alone...they don't live without fish either.
Even Jesus knew the value of fish. Like my father used to say when I was a tadpole.
You never asked what was on the table. My father would yell, "That's food boy! Eat it! Dammit Eat it!"
And that's all there was to that conversation.

Yeah, That's right... Me too - but nobody has to holler at me to eat my fish... There ain't much that can top a salmon steak in a honey-mustard glaze... Or just about any fish put to the smoke... Especially trout or salmon... Even cod, breaded and fried... What about a mess of perch fillets fried up in butter?
It's ALL good.
