Title: For How Long Do You Expect To Be "Socially Isolated?"
Post by: Cyber Liberty on March 22, 2020, 07:38:21 pm
OK, so the Chinese Virus AKA COVID-19 is an undeniable "thing," for better or worse!

A lot of us are in some kind of "Lock-down," or simply "Socially Isolated," by Gummint order.  Places like California have enacted prohibitions to non-essential driving.  Lists are published by jurisdictions like States, Counties and Cities of essential activities, and also lists of prohibited gatherings.  Nevada's closed all Casinos, and Restaurants must close dining rooms (take-out only).  The Mayor of my city has asked Restaurants to close their dining rooms.  Grocery stores have been stripped of many items, the biggest joke-generator being toilet paper.  Just try to buy a box of pistol ammo in a store.  Traffic is reduced to almost zero in places, in fact a look at the CalDOT website Friday showed all area freeway maps as "green" in both LA and SF Bay area.

Most Briefers are in these places, so there is some level of restriction.  Economic hardship is staring us in the face.  A third of my City's workforce was laid off in one fell swoop when Nevada across the Colorado River ordered the Casino's closed, even the one on the Res south of Laughlin.  (Good news!  The Indian Smoke Shop that sells fireworks is open!  So are the weed dispensaries!  happy77 )  Trouble for the local paper, as the majority of the adverts are for the Casinos.

So, the question:  How long to you expect to be in this situation?  Days?  Weeks?  Months?  More??

I'll lead off:  I retired a year and a half ago, then took my time moving to a new location in a "small-ish" city of about 35K or so.  I started being somewhat of a hermit after that, now I do some volunteer work.  TEA Party, Mrs. Liberty's ladies clubs and watch parties have all been cancelled for at least a month.

My answer would be "Doesn't apply, I'm a hermit."  What say all y'all?

Well, we're retired, so we don't have the "work" people to be exposed to.  Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, beaches, theaters, schools, gyms, libraries are all shut down, so .... until they open up... we'll be more like hermits than we were before.  We had out of town company that visited when they were sick, so we're getting over (hopefully) what they had.  Keeping our distance from family that we see for a few more weeks just to be on the safe side; don't want to infect them and vice-versa.

I'd say that this virus is going to get much worse before it gets better -- planning on at least 6-8 weeks.

4-6 weeks, we're already practically one down here in New York. So 3-5 more. Right now, still no cases here, thankfully.

If it goes on much beyond a month, I suspect there will be serious revolt.

We'll know more about how much "sheltering in place" is really happening tomorrow, when we can look at traffic cams and DOT traffic maps in the cities.  I would think that information goes directly to your proviso.

I should add an option to the Poll:  Zero.  I provide an essential service

Meh. I don't think residential IT would be considered essential, but I am doing it. Animal feed, fencing, fetching hay. watering, and etc, for ours and those who can't, all that happens whether or not.

Revolt?  It depends on what happens.  If we start seeing cases rise like that are in Italy, Spain and France and dying, people will stay put out of fear.

The President wants things back to pre-Chinese virus days as much as most of us. His re-election is dependent upon that. The containment will hopefully fulfill that goal.

My wife laughed when she first heard the term "social distancing".  Told me i have been practicing that for 40 years.  Which is true, since ...unless you are related to me, there is no reason to get within 4 feet of me anyway.   I always called it "personal space".  Just not a huggy, touchy person.  Not really a knock of myself....   just my nature.

The news has been very bad. But the ONLY thing you can control is how you respond to it.

Sure!  It actually makes my life a bit easier, because now I don't have to force myself to go out and face...shudder...people.  I hadn't been happier with being retired before now.  I'm hoping the restrictions for everybody else are gone by the beginning of May.  I'm supposed to be a Delegate at the AZ GOP Convention.  It would be a 2-3 day junket to Phoenix.

Hermit here. Not really because I want to be but because I have multiple chemical allergies. Except for not being able to shop at will, my life won't change at all. I have no family except for cousin who live in various states. I can't be around people who have fragrances or use scented laundry products, etc. Of necessity, I've learned to live a sequestered life. The transition to 2020 Pandemic USA is barely noticeable.

Thank God I'm not allergic to animals. Walking the park with my dogs is my only activity in the "outside world."

Sighlass...
Nobody knows... not me, not you... If folks would just isolate now (and I mean everyone not essential) then in 3 weeks we can be back to normal.

First off, to all Briefers...it is most likely there will NEVER be normal again as we once knew it.  This is not going to be the end, this might be the end of the beginning.  Three pandemics from China, and what, you think this is going to disappear into the woodwork.  That may fall into the category of wishful thinking.  And you think this is the last pandemic from China?  Really?  The next one will come sooner than you think.

It is imperative for us to understand these totalitarian nations.  Losing people means nothing.  People have absolutely no value.  That is part of the reason China was slow to react.  And the idiot liberals in the USA are looking for any reason to blame Trump.  A measly Trainer from the CDC working in China may well have prevented this.  Right!!!!  Have we become that f*&^ing stupid as a nation?

I hope this last no more than 2 weeks, but I suspect it will go 4-5 weeks.  If this economic shutdown last more than 4-5 weeks, Donald Trump would not be able to get elected dog catcher.  For the first time in all this, someone addressed the destruction of the living, that the living would suffer greater losses than those caused by the virus. The Next Generation with Steve Hilton on Fox News, Steve said enough is enough, we will end up with millions lost from the economic life shutdown.  So I say 4-5 weeks, and then the damage is long lasting and destroys the Republicans in November.  And I for one do not want an escapee from the assisted living home as POTUS.

And let's get serious, there is no evidence we are on track with Italy.  NONE!!  Watch the analysis by Liz Wheeler, and tell me I am wrong.  She is the best in journalism today from my point of view.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeGjXFyaXis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeGjXFyaXis)

People like Dr Marty Makary, from John Hopkins is lazy.  His analysis, 2 million dead, is nothing but to declare we are doomed like Italy.  No wonder Trump wants to bite the heads off these jerk*ffs!!!  Same goes for the anti Trump media.  I want them gone.  Keep Trump and flush these f*&^ers right out of the WH Press Corp, and good riddance.  At a minimum, displace the anti Trumpers by half and replace them with folks from conservative media to at least have a balanced media.

Trump's wishful thinking this virus is going away is not reality.  We need to adopt policies to protect the vulnerable as much as possible, and life must resume.  We had 60 million get H1N1 and 13,000 deaths and virtually nothing was done to change society.  This panic is bullshit.  Implement policies to protect the vulnerable, start using the drugs that have an indication of helping, i.e. the malaria drugs, and resume living.  Last but not least, begin a policy to curb trade with China.  Repatriate all pharma to start by executive order as a policy of national security.  Begin bringing back all industry that has anything to do with DOD.  ANYTHING...that will be a huge sector, and end education in the USA for Chinese nationals, including employment here.  END THE THEFT OF $500 billion worth of intellectual property.

China is a rogue nation, and it is time the USA leads the world away from these cretins.

3 months, not 6 months will end this virus...all wishful thinking, and the living will not survive.  Most household live paycheck to paycheck, and even 2 weeks shutdown is catastrophic!!!  That is why Trump loses if it goes 4-5 weeks.  The damage done will be long lasting, far beyond November!!!

It was not immediately clear why the man had jumped, though neighbors worried it may have been related to the state’s new regulation around self-isolation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“You have to be mentally strong to take on isolation. The uncertainty of what’s going to happen is scary,” the woman added.

My life has not changed even a little bit.
As an introverted antisocial person, I always keep to myself.
Never go 'out' for no reason and don't want to.
Use Uber/Lyft once a month to overstock on groceries and supplies, and that's about it.
And I love it. Never in my life have I felt such peace with myself.
What everyone is calling 'isolation' is how I have lived for years.
My brother asked me once, 'Why don't you buy a car?'
I said where would I go? What would I do with it?
I'm satisfied right where I am.
As for sanitizer, I always use it when I get home and have for years.
All of this stuff is so new to so many people, but for me it is just my regular life.
And it always has been. And I like it just fine. Everybody is freaking out while I am in my rocking chair.

There's got to be more to this than the isolation thing. Some are cut off from others because they want to be. Others because they have to be due to health issues. I didn't choose it. I don't want it. But I've learned to live in isolation for decades. When times are normal (non pandemic), I get sad when I see others getting to live normal lives, but I never, ever considered ending my life. BTW, full disclosure -- I'm not 100% alone because I always have a dog or two in my life.

Anyway, I don't believe just being temporarily isolated would cause someone to commit suicide. There's more to this story.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW, folks. Got extra time on your hands these days and don't like being alone? This is a great time to rescue an animal. The shelters are filling up and are in desperate need of homes for the critters. If adoption is too much of a commitment, fostering is an option. Please consider it, and please ask those in your sphere of influence to consider it as well.
That said, people kill themselves every day.
Exactly. The more people comply, the more quickly it will end.  The more stubborn people are in rejecting the advice of the scientific and medical community and putting the rest of us at risk, the longer the restrictions will be needed.
So one month if people are smart.  Far longer if people lack wisdom.
I'm not entirely self-isolated and this is causing my family and friends fits.  They are all self-isolated, but I keep going to the supermarket and on walks in the neighborhood when the weather is decent.  Presumably, walks outside are still allowed so long as one keeps a distance from other people  But the governor is now making noise about forcing people to stay inside with a few exceptions.  Don't know if a stroll around the neighborhood would be exempted.
I'm at high risk  -- age 67, diabetes and a history of heart disease.  But I believe being on lockdown will kill me faster than this virus.
Gov. Dewine has said (correctly) that getting outside is important for mental health.  Telling people to stay inside is just stupid.
Yep...a few years behind ya, but I have the same health issues.  We've sheltered in as much as we're going too ... they've closed the libraries, pools, sporting events, concert halls, movie theaters, beaches ... I'd go crazy if I couldn't walk my neighborhood, especially the parks.  Besides ... I need to walk for heart health!  I have a treadmill ... but it just not the same.  I need the change of scenery, sunshine and fresh air.
Don't forget the Markets have tanked, hard. It supposedly rained stockbrokers in '29...or it might have involved  the loss of distant loved ones with no way to be there. Many motivations, few specifics.
