Title: Do you get along with your neighbors?

Sign Of The Times: 75% Of Adults Aren’t Friends With Any Of Their Neighbors

by John Anderer

Do you know your neighbors? Survey reveals that nearly 1 in 4 people are living somewhere with “no sense of community spirit” in their neighborhood.

LONDON — In decades past, it wasn’t uncommon at all for the average family to know each and every one of their neighbors living close by on the same street. Those dwelling on the same block would regularly gather for holiday parties in the winter, and barbecues during the summer. As the years have gone by, however, people have slowly become more inclined to keep to themselves and shy away from even greeting or speaking to their neighbors.

Now, a new survey of 2,000 British adults shows the staggering extent to which the concept of a neighborhood community has fallen by the wayside. In all, 75% say they consider their neighbors mere acquaintances at best. Sadly, nearly a quarter wouldn’t dream of knocking on one of their doors uninvited because there is “no sense of community spirit” in their neighborhood.

The survey, commissioned by Lottoland, also found that one in 10 modern adults mine as well be living next to an empty house as they only see their neighbors less than once per month. Still, four in 10 say they are at least “friendly” with a few of their neighbors, but still wouldn’t call them actual friends. The average survey respondent reports knowing the names of just five people living on their street.

Shockingly, one in 20 couldn’t name a single other person from his or her block.

   When I first bought this house 20 years ago, they called the cops on me 3 times for excessive (Stereo) noise, there is actually a City Ordinance with a hefty fine.   All those people have since moved on (to hell, probably).  Other than the young lady (45ish) closest to me we drink and party often, the other 4, we get along but I avoid them if I can.

Since we've moved in a year ago, we've met one of the neighbors to the left of us,the Walkers' Johnny (kid you not) and Shirley -- they're ok, he's kind of quirky and if I met him on the street and didn't know he was married, I'd say he's likely gay. She's seems nice enough.  They brought over some left over muffin/bread of some sort from their church when we met them; um... who brings leftovers to meet neighbors for the first time?  Just sayin'.  The nice thought was there I suppose.  We have empty lots on either side of us and hopefully they'll stay empty for awhile.  In back of us is a 80' canal -- then 4 side by side empty lot so don't have to worry about neighbors behind us.

Living in liberalville, the neighbors stopped talking to me when I put my "I'm a deplorable" sticker on my truck...

Yes. They all have helped me, when I moved in.  But, I also share my fresh baked goods with them.  The Illegal neighbors, right next door, are a bit harder to deal with. No English language and loud Polka music, late into the night.  I wear ear-plugs.  I gave their kids some treats.  A few weeks later, they came over with a green plant to thank me.  They let me know, If I forget to close my garage door at night.  Sometimes, after I hit close, it jumps, and opens again. I learned to stay a while and see it close.
So far so good.

Offer to take them to your local gun range and blow through about a $100 in ammo.  Great icebreaker.

So, like the other day I had convo with my weird neighbor. It was a little one sided, but It went something like this:

"I know you're in there, old man! Listen up, mister! That piece of scum barking rat of yours has just taken his last dump on my lawn! I find one more- just one- I'm gonna catch him and staple his ass shut!"

I have couple of neighbors (sorta being we live on 3 and 1/2 acres). One is Salt of the Earth excellent (need a tool, we share what we have, he even put up a couple of my famous Christmas lights in his trees).... Other neighbor is a good fellow with a wife and one kid from Hades. Daughter (with a drug problem) pulls up and blares rap music with MF this and that and finally I had to tell her I wasn't having it (would call the police). She stopped the crap music (I told her she was welcome to play any music loud she wanted, just not with vulgar language). Other day bumped into her and she acted like nothing had happened. Druggies are funny folks.

This NTer keeps his dog on one of those shock collar systems (so I have surprises all over my yard). The system works great (until the collar battery wears out about twice a year). She (little beagle) know right up to the inch where her roam range ends.  Leaves her with about 1 and 1/2 acres to do her business.

When I bought the house, I was just fine until I backed the Harley in. Then, the BS started. Finally, one of the neighbors had the guts to face off with me, and I informed him I didn't know who was the source of complaints against me, but assured him I was there to stay and I'd outlive them all.
We buried the hatchet some time later, but I have outlived them all.
The new kids around aren't so bad, with one exception. There the police visit so often, I have thought about buying the place and getting a zoning change so I could put in a donut shop. (People are creatures of habit, and I'd have a good starting customer base).

We built this house 10 years ago and were so happy to move out of the little college town in which we formerly lived. We were surrounded by leftist nutballs there. I hated that place.

 Here, we get along cordially with our neighbors, help each other out when the need arises, but otherwise give each other space.

The nearest town has a "Trump Store", brick and mortar, selling Trump Flags and such. You won't see that back East.

Three cities in my County with 20-30,000 each have full-time (year round) brick and mortar GOP HQs, and we do a bang up business selling Trump swag.

Grew up in a small, close knit neighborhood where everyone knew everyone else and would help if you asked,  but not meddle. Good people -- never had to worry about crime.  Could leave your doors unlocked and, in summer, wide open when you weren't home.

Moved to the big city in the 1970s -- what a change! -- where everyone kept to him'herself.  In 1989, I bought a house in the old neighborhood and moved back, Still not a bad place for the first few years, but by the mid-1990s as the older generation died off and the younger generation moved away, the town became infested with gangstas, then illegals and alleged refugees.  As I mentioned elsewhere, the town has now become a dumping ground for the homeless, mentally ill, drug addicts and alcoholics and a few days ago, I learned there is a convicted pedophile living a block away.

So no, I'm not close to my neighbors.  Don't want to know them.

@Applewood

You might consider moving if you can afford to move and your location isn't dependent on your job.  A used mobile home on a 1 acre lot in the country won't cost that much,and you can live in peace.

@sneakypete

Thanks for the advice.  I' had thought about selling a few years ago, but I procrastinated.  Now I'll be lucky if I could recoup the price I paid in 1989.  A shame since I've sunk serious money into the place to improve and maintain it, but I won't get that money back for sure.

I have an aunt, age 88, who is looking into an assisted living/retirement community.  I gathered some info for her and kept a copy for myself.  I may join her.  This community will, if desired, take the house and sell it or whatever to help pay for a client's fees and costs to live there.  Since I'm not going to get any money for the house anyway, I think this might be the best course of action for me.

I dunno. Mowing the yard cuts down on ticks, and leaves that much less close in to burn if something gets out of hand.

Sure... mowed down, not 'mown' ... It ain't 4 feet tall or nothin like that... And since I don't water it, once it dries out, one more mow and it ain't growing anymore... so fire is no worry. I cut it to keep in front of it all spring... maybe twice in july, once in august, and forget about it. Even trim it sometimes too... A far cry from the suburban definition, and I am pretty sure most here would be aghast...

The Castle is on about an acre, much of it steep.  The neighborhood all has "Natural Desert" which means everybody just ignores it so it's full of cactus, Manzanita and some tumbleweeds.  We just have to maintain the patch of gravel that surrounds the buildings.

I get along fairly well with all my neighbors, at least I try. Some years back though, I was at the end of my rope. A woman down the street started calling the cops on me most every day claiming I hadn't moved my truck in over 24 hours. The city had passed a law that you can't block the sidewalk when you park in your driveway. And then there was a new law, you can't park in your yard. So I had to park on the curb. It got so old I prepped the family to document everytime the cops came to see if I could get her for harassment. Then one day the cops came out 3 times on the same day. I had a pretty good idea of who it was so I put the word out for her to cut it out and no more visits by the cops.

Well, I need to throw pre-emergent on it every spring, after Mrs/ Liberty finishes planting stuff.  90 % of the land needs zero maintenance.  My kind of "lawn."  Mrs. Liberty does have a blow-torch to handle the occasional pop-up weeds.  So, we don't weed or mow, we burn off.  I might be a redneck.

Bob has lived here 30 yrs.  We know the neighbors but we don't associate with each other - EXCEPT IN TIMES OF EMERGENCY.

One day the side gate was opened by someone and Prissy got out.  By the time we knew that, we had no idea where she was.  Bob took off down the block and I quickly put on shoes (had on houseshoes) to go up the block.

Went outside and the woman who lives on one side of us, right then, drove into our driveway, with Prissy inside.   She was picking up her kids at the local school about a block away and on the sidewalk, she saw Prissy about to cross the street into traffic to get to the park with kids in it next to the school.  She stopped the car, got her, and brought her home.

Another time it was dark and I fell when coming back from our mailbox, and my head slammed down on a big rock.  A man walking on sidewalk saw me, called 911 and a woman who lived two doors down from us, Bob knew her, I didn't, suddenly showed up, went in house, found my phone, called Bob who was shopping to tell him; took Prissy into house and shut her up in a bathroom.

So, we neighbors leave each other alone, unless someone needs help.

Beautiful. Redneck jr grade (Blow sh*t up is usually tannerite or dynamite, but it'll do with any disaster producing sort of combination of fireworks) The rest will come wit time  :laugh:

Story:
Husband was an officer of American National Insurance Co., (home office in Galveston, Texas) and we were living outside St. Louis, Mo. for a year while husband "fixed" problems in the St. Louis office as that office dealt with all healthcare policies.  My husband was a Marine and liked to blow things up.  There was a big stump in our backyard, no fences allowed there by HOA so it was like common ground, anyone could walk there.  He wanted the stump out and had black power to blow it up.

It happened to be July 4th when he blew it up.  The sound was enormous when the powder exploded.  Then, coming down the hill many people were coming to the explosion.  They thought it was fireworks due to July 4th.  I was embarrassed, but husband was laughing with all who came.

@Victoria33

I have a little secret for you. ALL men love blowing stuff up. It's a man-thing on a genetic level.

Some men love it a little more than others. We call these men "Scary",and take great care to not piss them off.

Been awhile, but for the 4th of July hubby used to save up empty plastic pop bottles of various different sizes and brands and come the 4th he'd buy dry-ice.  Put a bit of water in the bottle, drop in a few pieces of dry ice, seal it tightly and throw it.  Next think you know -- va boooom!  Police came out a couple of times for reported explosion coming from our house -- nope just a little dry ice being thrown into an empty field.   :laugh:  Oh .... we were reminded to pick up the empties.
