I'm not a good cat owner by many people's standards. There too many predators...owls, hawks, coyotes, dogs...

So I prefer that they remain indoors. Most dogs don't face similar problems, but  I prefer for  them to be in my fenced backyard or house. Truth be known, they would love to roam free as well.

I can't be that way @berdie ... A cat needs to BE a cat. They need to hunt. They need it.
Sure, there's risk. I have actually seen cats carried off. But not much. Shoot, if they are car wise, and have a human supporting them, they are likely to die old...

Same with a dog - If you've ever seen a dog at hunting camp, you've seen a dog in heaven. Entirely different than in town. That dog is HAPPY and free. For days. It's really a trip to see it. And again, there is risk. I've seen dogs come back to camp all tore up and die. But they NEED it too.

So, not cussin you, but for me, I think them critters would not want to give that up for mere safety, anymore than I would. I'll let em.

I hear what you're saying @roamer_1 . But cats just don't last long around here outside, even if human supported. Although I had one cagey feral that made it 10 years...and then moved inside. She did her hunting keeping the house clear of mice. And  a mighty fine job she did! As for the dogs...as soon as they get jobs and can afford their own vet bills, they can take their own chances, lol. Although I'm a pretty good nurse, the injuries that that exceeded my veterinary skill were darn expensive. It's also been my experience that they usually wanted to be inside...underneath foot.

But like I said...I hear where you are coming from.

I have a bunch of cats, all inside kittens.  We have Coyotes, Bobcats and Hawks outside....Say no to predators.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16

Get a couple big dogs. They'll keep all but the hawks off your land - surprised the donkeys don't already wrt coyotes... They hate em.

A pack of Yotes will take down a big dog.  Our best time was when the donkeys were here, because they really do scare off the Yotes.  They stomp them to death.

That's why you need two. So long as they can guard each other, there will be no profit in it for the coyotes. And not always btw... I speak a bit about my last Malamute, Brown... I never tied him in camp. The coyotes would call him out, and he would go, every time. That dog loved a good tussle. I came across his work up the trail one following morning... four dead yotes, and he was just fine.

Best word of the day I’ve ever seen.
G-d bless America. G-d bless us all

Adopt a puppy or kitty from your local shelter
Or an older dog or cat. They're true love❤️
