Man holds dog tight after fire

The picture of a Windsor Heights man holding his dog after a rescue by firefighters on Thursday has become a powerful tool to create support for the family.

Date 10/19/12,

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I know how he felt. When we lived in CA our home was in the hills and backed to a wilderness area, we had stopped on the way home to pick up our van which had been in the shop and looked up and saw all this black smoke coming from the general area of our home.  We drove home and the had the turn off down to our street blocked off and you could see the fire had burned up our back hill toward our backyard and the fire was not controlled... I freaked out knowing out dogs were in the house and fire was headed toward our house..... I literally got out of the car and walked over to the policeman who had the street blocked, showed my drivers license, told him my concern and started walking down the hill (in the meantime my husband who had been behind me was trying to figure out what in the world I was doing , he parked the van and then moved my car out of the street.. by then they would not let him or anyone else through the police line.  Half way down the steep hill in my high heels the fire chief stopped and picked me up and drove me to my house, the fire department was in my driveway and in my backyard,  all the gates were open and my dogs were both in the house shaking totally freaked out......  I Go them on leashes and out of the house and we went across the street to my neighbors yard to wait things out... one thing the fire department worried about is the high heat can sometimes build up under the roof tiles and start a fire in the attics of homes around these wild-fires... but frankly my only concern was just getting to my dogs...

Just about every video has commercials embedded these days.  Seems the guy's dog was locked in a bedroom, house caught on fire, he was at work, came home, FD wouldn't allow him in, when they opened the bedroom door the dog literally darted out of the house and to her owner who was in tears at her still being alive... the site of him hugging her in tears has gone viral -- seems it was an electrical fire.

Shaun Duling, Former Marine, Raises $4,000 To Bring 'Bolt,' Stray Afghan Dog, Back To The States (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By Ryan Grenoble Posted: 10/25/2012 10:41 am

A war-zone halfway around the world seems an odd spot to find a new best friend. But for Shaun Duling, Bolt was no average dog.

Duling, a former Marine, first met Bolt when he arrived in Afghanistan last October. Bolt and his sister, Xena, used to hang around the base. While all the soldiers favored Xena, Bolt was more skittish and standoffish.

"I was stationed with the German army. The German guys were taking care of Xena. They had built her a little house, feeding her two to three times a day. Bolt was kind of left outside. No one really gave him food. He was very malnourished, very skinny but still a very happy dog," Duling told ABC News.

So Duling and a friend began to bring Bolt, a Labrador-Shepherd mix, into the fold. Bolt soon became Duling's loyal companion.

"When I'd go out on runs, he'd be right there next to me. Every morning, he'd walk to the office with me. I think once he established that trust, he was almost inseparable,” Duling elaborated to WJLA.

That bond was tested when the base commander ordered all dogs be removed and dropped off in a village 12.4 miles away, a situation Duling described in a blog as "pretty rough... especially after seeing how confused he was when they came to take him."

The next day, miraculously, when Duling woke up at 2:30 a.m. for work, "there [Bolt] was, tail wagging and happier than ever."

According to soldiers, after they'd dropped the animals off in the far-removed village, Bolt would have none of it. He ran behind the convoy for around 10 miles before the commander ordered them to stop, picked up the pooch, and decided he could stay.

When the time came for Duling to leave Afghanistan for good, he told ABC News that Bolt tried to jump into the helicopter with him and had to be physically restrained.

Now, thanks to a UK-based dog rescue organization called Nowzad, Bolt is headed state-side. Empowered by over $4,000 in donations collected online, the group sent Bolt on a 14-and-a-half hour plane ride around the world.

Bolt is currently in quarantine; NBC5 reports he'll be back by his owner's side in Virginia by November 5.

Marc & Anax: Can Marc Certify with his new dog Dark?
Posted on 15th October, by Chuck in Dog Advocate.

This is the next chapter in the compelling story of Army Specialist Marc Whittaker, his military working dog (MWD) Anax (now retired) and his new MWD, Dark. I suggest you read the first few pieces to get caught up if you haven’t already.

Readers Digest version: Anax is injured in Afghanistan protecting Marc. Anax loses his leg as a result. Anax is now located in Texas with Marc’s family. Marc is in Germany trying to get back “on the leash” and channel his passion for dogs through MWD Dark. But MWD Dark is no MWD Anax.

Marc and Anax Original Story

Memories that Never Fade Part I

Then and Now Part II

The Struggle between MWD Anax & MWD Dark Part III

Mark and Anax: The Struggle to Move On  Part IV

Marc & Anax: Will Dark Ever Pass Certification? Part V

Marc Whittaker slammed his hand down of the buzzing alarm clock and turned over. He wasn’t in the mood today. He pulled the sheets over his shoulders tightly. He lay in bed not wanting to move. But that wasn’t an option.

He was a Soldier, an Army dog handler, and there were dogs at the kennels that needed his attention. Two dogs to be exact: his current dog—patrol narcotic dog Dark and his former dog, patrol explosive detector dog (retired)Anax.Anax cheeks Marc & Anax: Can Marc Certify with his new dog Dark?

The frigging military system was taking forever to approve Anax’s retirement. There were so many bureaucratic hoops to leap through. Anax had three legs for God’s sake. You would think it would be easier for Anax to retire and then for Marc to adopt the dog that lost his leg protecting him.

Be patient, Marc, he told himself. It will happen. Everything happens for a reason. If the process was quicker Anax would already be home in Texas. Then you wouldn’t get to see him every day, he told himself.

It was time to get back on the horse. It was time to regain the swagger he lost during the fire fight in Afghanistan, the same fire fight that injured his pal Anax.

He had certification coming up with Dark. They had failed certification last time. Marc wasn’t used to failing anything, so it was a bitter pill to swallow. It was embarrassing that he couldn’t work law enforcement or missions with Dark. It sucked that other teams in the kennel had to pick up his slack.

He was determined to get Dark righted and put on the correct path. He would fix this puppy, they would certify, and things could resume some semblance of normalcy until he got ready for his Permanent Change of Station. The newest and greatest news was that Marc had been able to land a slot at Fort Hood, Texas. In October he would leave Germany and be about three hours from his home town.

He was ready for a change. No, he needed a change—a fresh start, a new kennel, and a new dog were exactly what he needed.

But that was in the future. He had work to do here in Germany first. He needed to fix Military Working Dog Dark. So he would fix Dark.anax hugging marc1 Marc & Anax: Can Marc Certify with his new dog Dark?

After his last certification his supervisors ordered him to spend less time with Anax. But that was never going to happen. Marc would never give up spending time with his little son Anax. So he snuck extra time in with Anax whenever he could. But he spent the majority of time training Dark.

The other handlers of the kennel stood behind Marc. As a kennel they worked hard on fixing Dark’s issues. Marc was confident he could fix Dark because his fellow Soldiers had his back. Another team from his kennel, SSG Lee and MWD Fibi, were preparing to deploy, so SSG Lee and Marc spent a lot of time training together.

Dark’s first problem was that he was fringing. Fringing is what it’s called when a working dog gives a final response like sitting as soon as he is in the odor cone of the explosive. This means the dog hasn’t identified the exact location of the odor but is close. In the dog community this is referred to as “not working the odor to source.”

Dark’s second problem was his false sitting. Dark just sat even when there was no odor in the area. Marc knew that his dog was just frustrated and wanted his toy. He knew that Dark was trying. He also knew that Dark’s frustration could be running down the leash from Marc.

He refused to allow that to happen again. He would be patient with his new puppy. He just had to come to terms with the fact that Dark wasn’t Anax. Of course it would be nice if Dark had a high drive like Anax. But he didn’t, so Marc was stuck with this low drive puppy.

Marc was excited as he drove to his second certification attempt in Grafenwoehr, Germany. He was confident in them as a team. He knew he wasn’t devoted or attached to Dark like he was with Anax. Sure, this could hinder their FULL potential as a team. But he was confident they would pass certification.Marc in Afghan Marc & Anax: Can Marc Certify with his new dog Dark?

He was elated to see the same certifying official, Master Sergeant Hillis, from his last certification in Baumholder. Marc wanted to show Hillis that he had listened, fixed his dog’s deficiencies, and was on track.

His heart beat fast and he nodded with anticipation as HIllis provided instructions.

“Whittaker, you and Dark are up first,” Hillis said.

Marc nodded and knelt down next to Dark.

“You can do this pal. I believe in you,” Marc whispered as he stoked Dark’s head.

“Whittaker, let’s go,” Hillis said.

Marc stood back up, looked down the road he was preparing to search, and nodded. He leaned over, released Dark from his leash, and commanded, “Seek.”

Dark surged forward. His tail wagged slowly, his nose was about eight inches from the ground, and he searched the road in a tight pattern.

Marc smiled. He knew this was it. He was going to do this!

How does Marc fare at his second attempt at certification?

Has Marc’s frustration affected Dark’s performance?

Can he ever build a bond with Dark like he had with Anax?

Stay tuned for the next chapter in this series!

Rescue dog has its day at the Pawmetto Lifeline Fur Ball
By Julia Rogers Hook

Blue Sky and the Stray Cat dancers Blue Sky and the Stray Cat dancers The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center was jumping on October 13 as animal lovers and advocates across the Midlands turned out for the 6th annual Pawmetto Fur Ball, a black tie event that raises money to house homeless animals, spay and neuter pets, and rescue doomed cats and dogs from the city pound’s death row.

The invitation suggested that guests “put on the dog and cat around” and promised food, drink, music, and dancing, and it was a promise beautifully delivered. The guests were all dressed to the nines, and the food and beverages were displayed flawlessly and even more delicious than they looked. “ We are so excited about this year’s turnout,” said Delores Mungo, Pawmetto Lifeline Board president. “ We were expecting over 700 people and got almost 800 that came,” Mungo said. “Between the generous donations from the corporate sponsors and the businesses and individuals who have donated auction items, we think this will be the best Fur Ball yet.”

Denise Wilkinson, CEO of Pawmetto Lifeline, and Army Sgt. 1st Class Chuck Shuck with the American Humane Association Hero Dog of 2012, Gabe. Denise Wilkinson, CEO of Pawmetto Lifeline, and Army Sgt. 1st Class Chuck Shuck with the American Humane Association Hero Dog of 2012, Gabe.

The Fur Ball, held every October, is one of the two major fundraising events for Pawmetto Lifeline, the other being Bark in the Park in the spring. While this was the foundation’s sixth year, Jan Jernigan, chairwoman of the Fur Ball event, said it was the best yet. With almost 800 people attending, we have broken all records,” Jernigan said. “It’s obvious that we have a whole lot of animal lovers in the Columbia area.”

Since one of Pawmetto Lifeline’s biggest priorities is saving animals from death row, an honored guest of the evening was Gabe, a retired military (army) dog who completed more than 200 combat missions in Iraq.

He was snatched off death row himself to serve his country, and earlier this month, he was named American Hero Dog of 2012 at the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards in Los Angeles. He was selected as the winner by a panel of celebrity animal advocates that included Whoopi Goldberg and Kristen Chenoweth. Gabe even got to have his picture made with America’s most famous animal advocate, Betty White.

“Jan ( Jernigan) has always wanted Betty White to attend our Fur Ball,” Mungo said with a smile. “And now, through Gabe, it’s kind of like she’s here.”

Gabe was chauffeured to the event by Army Sgt. 1st Class Chuck Shuck. After he was introduced to the crowd and they found out that during his military career, Gabe found 27 caches of explosives, potentially saving dozens of American lives, everyone wanted a photo with him.

Natasha and Andrew Drozdak Natasha and Andrew Drozdak “Imagine if he had been euthanized,” said Louise Reid, a Fur Ball guest and fellow animal lover. “So many of our military could have been killed without him there to find those explosives. It’s such a good thing to be a part of something that pulls these innocent animals off death row.”

And indeed, that seemed to be everyone’s sentiment. The silent auction included everything from pretty baubles to a trip to Paris, and it was all donated.

Mungo said she was deeply grateful to all the people who worked so hard to make the Fur Ball happen.

“This evening represents all that is good,” she said. “Tireless meetings, wonderful sponsors, and marvelous donations for the silent auction and our amazing volunteers who never say no to the animals and our incredible staff who is completely dedicated to our mission…a staff that gives way more than their paychecks could ever reflect, and they give from their hearts.”

Fran Fellers and Deloris Mungo, Pawmetto Lifeline Board president Fran Fellers and Deloris Mungo, Pawmetto Lifeline Board president Pawmetto Lifeline gave Jernigan her own page of thanks in the program since the Fur Ball was her idea.

“Pawmetto Lifeline wishes to thank our Fur Ball Chairwoman, Jan Jernigan, for her vision for the Fur Ball and for being the driving force behind this beautiful event since its inception,” the page read. “ We honor you for what you have made possible.”

For her part, Jernigan said the idea of the Fur Ball was not hers alone, but shared with Cyrus Frakes, a friend and fellow animal lover. She emphasizes that there wouldn’t be a ball without the people of Columbia.

“I am so grateful to our community for supporting Pawmetto Lifeline by attending this wonderful event! We are blessed with many animal-lovers in the Midlands. Everyone who attended helped to save a life!”

I haven't been a dog owner since I was a kid, but I DO remember that dog groomers were few and far between then.  We used to put our dog in the shower stall to shampoo her, and pray she wouldn't shake off too much before we could get her outside afterwards.

I have a FB friend who lives in Texas in the country.  They own 5-6 large dogs, all of whom they adore.  Their last name is Rose--every few weeks they post about running them "through the Rose Car Wash" - all in one afternoon.  One of their labs is cute--he loves the extra attention so much that he'll put up with a shower just to get it.
