Of course, he will be most remembered for TAGS, The Andy Griffith Show.  The first 4-seasons were lovingly crafted and beautifully written morality plays (I was sorry when Don Knotts left the show and it never was quite the same after that).

TAGS inspired my love of bluegrass with the frequent appearances of The Dillards and because of the many folk tunes Andy or a guest would sing.  The shows were laced with the home-spun stories that were part of Griffith's act when he was breaking into show business--and they were truly delightful.  My favorites were Romeo and Juliet and the Shot Heard Round the World.

Here's one of my favorite moments with Joanna Moore guest staring:

(Whistling sprightly tune)  Rest In Peace, Andy Griffith.  You brought joy to millions.

Liberal or conservative, we're all the same at the end of our time.

In a Tuesday statement, President Obama mourned the passing of actor Andy Griffith.

"Michelle and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Andy Griffith this morning. A performer of extraordinary talent, Andy was beloved by generations of fans and revered by entertainers who followed in his footsteps. He brought us characters from Sheriff Andy Taylor to Ben Matlock, and in the process, warmed the hearts of Americans everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy’s family," Obama said.

Griffith, best known for "The Andy Griffith Show" and “Matlock,” died Tuesday at age 86.
