Actress Katie Holmes and her 6-year-old daughter were lying low Sunday in their new Manhattan apartment as a creepy crew reportedly from the Church of Scientology watched their every move.

Holmes and her child, Suri, have stayed out of sight since she blindsided hubby Tom Cruise by filing for divorce in New York.

But five burly and menacing men parked outside of Holmes’ Seventh Ave. building in Chelsea made no attempts to hide Sunday.

The mystery men sat inside a white Cadillac Escalade bearing Tennessee license plates with the engine idling and the AC running. All casually dressed and 40 to 50 years old, they refused to identify themselves or even roll down their windows when a reporter from the Daily News knocked.

The men only got out of their SUV to photograph reporters interviewing neighbors in front of the building between 24th and 25th Sts.

Citing unnamed sources, TMZ.com reported Sunday that the men in the Escalade were sent by the Church of Scientology to shadow Holmes and her daughter.

Scientology officials denied the TMZ report Sunday.

“There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes,” Gary Soter, a lawyer for the Church of Scientology International, told The News in an email.

Holmes fears Scientologist big wigs now see her as a threat to their organization because she is dumping their celebrity Top Gun.

The Daily News reported Sunday that Holmes had concocted an elaborate escape-from-Cruise plan that included renting her Chelsea pad weeks before filing for divorce on Thursday and asking for sole custody of Suri.

The papers were filed a week before Cruise’s 50th birthday.

Frankly after what he did to Nicole Kidman and then basically took their kids away from her, I am thrilled to see Katie being the dumper rather than the dumpee...

Katie's Cruise kidnap fear as 'Scientology' goons eye building

She’s a prisoner in her own home.

Katie Holmes fears she can’t take one step without a Scientology goon following her every move in a heavy- handed intimidation attempt, multiple sources close to the actress told The Post yesterday.

The pretty actress last night was holed up in her Chelsea pad — terrified that soon-to-be-ex-hubby Tom Cruise might kidnap their little girl, law-enforcement sources said. Holmes told another building resident of her abduction fear — and that neighbor called police on Friday, sources said. But without Holmes phoning in the report herself — and Cruise known to be 2,600 miles away shooting a movie in Iceland — police couldn’t take any action.

Managers at Holmes’ plush Seventh Avenue building, though, have been put on alert for Cruise or any strangers who might want to get inside, the sources said.

Holmes, who filed for divorce from superstar Scientologist actor Cruise last week, knew this was coming, the sources said.

“Katie saw all the pressure. They [Scientologists] are professionals at pressuring people to be quiet,” said a friend of the actress after her bombshell divorce filing in Manhattan last week. “That’s why she did this [filed for divorce] in secret.”

A team of beefy armed men parked themselves in a white Cadillac Escalade outside Holmes’ place all day yesterday, snapping pictures of people outside the building and demanding to know who they were. Cops finally pulled up in a marked NYPD squad car behind the SUV and checked out its Tennessee license plates. The officers said they were acting on complaints of “suspicious activity in a white Escalade” but did not elaborate. They spent about 15 minutes eyeing the SUV before leaving. At least two of the five men sitting in the SUV were clearly packing heat. When asked who they worked for, one wisecracked: “We’re waiting for a bus.”

A Holmes rep said the mystery men weren’t with the actress.

Cruise’s team denied the guards were working for the actor. A Scientology lawyer told TMZ the church is not tailing Holmes.

The actress and her daughter, Suri, were not seen in public all day yesterday.

Now that Suri, is 6, Holmes reportedly wants to take her as far away from Cruise’s Scientology pals as possible.

Holmes, who was born in Ohio and raised Catholic, is seeking full custody so that Suri can be shielded from alleged Scientology brainwashing, sources said.

“Suri is at the age where they are going to start educating her in Scientology centers and indoctrinating her into the religion,” Holmes’ pal said.

“Katie did convert when she and Tom were married, but she didn’t take to [Scientology]. Behind closed doors, and when the private planes and the red carpets were gone, she didn’t like it. And she decided she does not want that for Suri. ”

Holmes had been planning her marital escape for weeks, surreptitiously moving with Suri into the Chelsea apartment while Cruise was out of the country.

The box-office superstar Cruise was spotted working on the set of his movie “Oblivion” yesterday in Iceland.

Holmes told her neighbor she was afraid he’d charter a plane to get back to New York.

“[Holmes] did not want that much influence and power and control [from the Church of Scientology] over her child and didn’t want to go through with” her education in it, according to Holmes’ friend.

“She was not going to let that happen to her daughter. Katie does not want them making all the decisions for her child,” the source said.

Cruise’s first two wives, Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, reportedly also had problems with the church’s hold on their then-husband.  Another former Hollywood wife, actress-photographer Carmen Llewellyn, who was married to “My Name is Earl” actor Jason Lee — a Scientologist — has said the reprisals are swift and brutal against spouses who leave mates who are in the church.

“I lost my manager and my career,” Llewellyn said in a published interview after her split from Lee. “People didn’t return my phone calls.

“Scientologists followed me down the street. They took pictures of my kids. They’d stake out my house, wait until we came our and follow us. They came looking for me to scare me.”

Cruise, who turns 50 tomorrow, and Holmes, 33, were married on Nov. 18, 2006, in a lavish Italian ceremony.

Holmes reportedly signed a prenuptial deal that will give her $3 million for each year of marriage, meaning she could walk away with a cool $15 million — and a mansion in Santa Barbara County, Calif.

From the Daily Mail (U.K.):

Katie Holmes's fears that daughter Suri was set to be inducted into a hardcore Scientology organisation were the driving force behind the end of her marriage to Hollywood star Tom Cruise.

The actress was allegedly convinced husband Tom Cruise was planning to send Suri, six, away to Sea Organisation -  an association of Scientologists established in 1968 by L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction writer and founder of Scientology.

Sea Org, as it is known, is where the highest levels of Scientology are taught and children as young as five can be sent to live there - without their parents. ...

One of the principle reasons behind the split, say Holmes’s circle, has been her growing scepticism towards Scientology, which was founded by Fifties sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard, who taught his disciples that humans are descended from space aliens called Thetans.

To begin with, Katie played the dutiful convert. The couple had a lavish Scientology wedding in Rome in November 2006 at which the church’s leader David Miscavige was Cruise’s best man — he was even said to have accompanied the couple on honeymoon.

Six months earlier, Katie had given birth to Suri amid rumours she had gone through a ‘silent birth’ (Scientologists insist mothers should not scream or shout out in pain during labour in order for babies to be born in a calm environment).  And for anyone who imagines such tales are merely colourful myths, Kelly Preston, the wife of fellow celebrity Scientologist John Travolta, publicly admits she went through a silent birth with their son Benjamin in 2010.  ...
