Our trading partners need access to America's markets more than America needs their goods and services.
This is why diversified supply chains are critical to national security. Imported goods need to be multisourced across multiple nations so no single nation can have dominance or leverage in supplying the US with critical goods, like medicines.
I fully agree. Except that we have been the world's whipping dog for decades around trade. So like in this case, Tariffs and Trade wars, if used in a negotiative way may have some long term benefits. They also are a high stakes game of chicken, and right now in most cases it is a Bull Dozer vs Mini-Cooper duel.
I have all my life been a unapologetic capitalist.... But in this case, I think and hope we give Trump a little leeway in working this out. Ask me again in 6 months though, and I might give another answer if Trump screws this up.
