Longtime Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen not seeking re-election in 2026 in key northeastern swing state
Republicans control the Senate 53-47 after flipping four seats from blue to red in last November's elections

Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire is the latest Democrat in the Senate to announce her retirement rather than seek re-election in the 2026 midterms.

The Wednesday announcement by the former governor and three-term senator in a key New England swing state will further complicate the Democrats' efforts to regain control of the Senate from the Republicans in next year's elections.

The news also marks the beginning of the end of a long and successful career of the first woman in American politics to win election both as a governor and as a U.S. senator.

"I ran for public office to make a difference for the people of New Hampshire," Shaheen said. "That purpose has never and will never change. But today, after careful consideration, I am announcing that I have made the difficult decision not to seek re-election to the Senate in 2026."

DOGE's findings  may end up mixing things up more on Capitol Hill than anyone realizes.  Koffee Klatch had a good discussion this morning, around what % of our legislators have personally gained from corruption.  I think we came up with a consensus conservative estimate of 75%.  And I think that is a conservative, benefit of the doubt low end estimate.

Could Karoline Leavitt be a candidate for US Senator from New Hampshire?

Sununu is the obvious name, but he declined to run in 2022 when Trump was endorsing a bunch of losers.

Forgot about the MAGA ass kissing aspect.  That worked out so well for us for with Senators Oz and Walker.   :thud:

I’m watching to see if the behavior changes this cycle.  The House is almost certainly lost if history is a guide, but the senate majority can be preserved if Trump picks up the phone and calls Sununu and Kemp.  NC, OH, AK, ME will be difficult to hold, and maybe KY, MT, IA as second tier concerns.

Seriously, why would she seek reelection at 78?

78 is young for the US Senate.  She's still spry and ambulatory.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...

As far as I'm concerned after all that has been uncovered, we are flat out at war with Rats, and I have no desire to play nice.

Want a solid majority? Put these corrupt Rats in jail, and use the time before the appointment or special elections to use it to pass law. The pearl clutchers won't like it but let them bleat.

As a side note, if it weren't for Turtle we'd likely have a filibuster proof majority already.

Time to put her out to pasture.  To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds, and basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes.
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

  • Great President, but a 'do-nothing' Congress

Maybe she can take San Fran Nan with her.
