Hunter Biden cites financial woes in request for federal judge to dismiss laptop data case

Hunter Biden asked a federal judge Wednesday to dismiss his lawsuit against an ex-Trump aide that centers on the publication of contents of a laptop attributed to the former president's son, saying his dwindling financial resources have made it difficult to proceed with litigation.
 
In documents filed in California federal court, Biden's attorneys urged U.S. District Judge Hernan D. Vera to dismiss the 2023 lawsuit filed against Garrett Ziegler. They said Biden "has suffered a significant downturn in his income and has significant debt in the millions of dollars range.”

His financial troubles were made worse, Biden's attorneys said, following the wildfires in the Pacific Palisades that "upended" his life by making his rental home "unlivable for an extended period of time."

Biden "has had difficulty in finding a new permanent place to live as well as finding it difficult to earn a living,” they wrote, adding that Biden needs to direct his time and available resources to dealing with his relocation, the damage to his rental house, and his family’s living expenses, “as opposed to this litigation.”

Just six weeks after his father left the White House, Hunter Biden is broke again.

The on-again, off-again artist and recovering drug addict has told a judge that dwindling sales, combined with the destruction of his home in the Palisades, California wildfires, has left him destitute. The disclosure came within a request by the embattled Biden to toss a suit he originally brought against a Trump ally alleging he broke state and federal laws.

Continuing the legal saga, Biden went on, is no longer financially feasible because of “significant debt” accumulated while “litigating the case” against Garrett Ziegler, the founder of the company Marco Polo, which published an extensive list of documents and photographs found on Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop in the form of an online searchable database.

“[Hunter] has suffered a significant downturn in his income and has significant debt in the millions of dollars range,” attorneys for the former first son wrote in a recent California court filing.

The situation was “exacerbated” by the fiery, windswept destruction of his Palisades home, which is now “unlivable,” an understatement based on photographs showing a charred foundation with nothing left standing except a brick chimney.

“Like many others in that situation, I am having difficulty in finding a new permanent place to live,” Biden claimed in the motion. “While I was aware that my financial position had significantly deteriorated over time, it was not until the past month that I realized I had to take drastic actions to alleviate this situation.”

Judge Grants Hunter Biden’s Request to Dismiss Lawsuit Because He’s Broke

A federal judge dismissed Hunter Biden’s lawsuit filed against a former Trump administration staffer in California after Biden requested the case end because of his financial difficulties.

U.S. district judge Hernan Vera terminated Biden’s lawsuit against Garrett Ziegler Thursday over the public database Ziegler made with emails and images from the younger Biden’s infamous laptop hard drive and iPhone server.

An appointee of Hunter Biden’s father, former President Joe Biden, Vera tossed Biden’s legal challenge with prejudice, meaning he cannot bring the lawsuit again at some point in the future

“To be clear, the Court does not express any opinion concerning the underlying merits of the case. And the Court accepts the detailed representations made by Plaintiff as to the reasons motivating his request to dismiss. But under Fed. R. Civ. P. 41, and on these facts, Plaintiff’s request to dismiss without prejudice is not warranted,” Vera said in an order.

Hunter Biden asked Vera to toss the case last week because of financial struggles due to dried up book sales and art sales starting in late 2023, when he was indicted on federal tax charges and the subject of a high-profile impeachment investigation by House Republicans. The loss of income also coincided with the collapse of Joe Biden’s political career last summer due to his advanced age and evidently declining mental faculties.

Kind of a no-brainer. Hunter is the plaintiff who asked for dismissal.  No reason for the court not to dismiss the the case. But his financial woes are laughable.

More likely the lawyers didn't think he had a chance of winning, and the payout wasn't worth the risk.

Probably because if he loses the case the other side can counter sue for their lawyer fees. By not having a final judgement he just walks away.
