Rachel Maddow throws down gauntlet with blistering rant on 'indefensible' moves by ruthless new MSNBC president

MSNBC's $25 million liberal icon Rachel Maddow torched new president Rebecca Kutler and the network brass Monday after they canceled Joy Reid's show.

The anchor appeared on the last episode of The ReidOut earlier in the evening, where she declared herself 'bereft' that Reid had been fired but didn't initially criticize the network.

When Maddow - who was rumored to have taken a pay cut when signing her new contract at MSNBC - took to the airwaves later on, it was no-holds barred, with Maddow slamming the network for firing Reid and a slew of other 'non-white' anchors.

'I do not want to lose her as a colleague here at MSNBC, and personally, I think it is a bad mistake to let her walk out the door. It is not my call and I understand that. But that's what I think,' Maddow said.

She added: 'I will tell you. It is also unnerving to see that on a network where we've got two – count them – two nonwhite hosts in primetime, both of our nonwhite hosts in primetime are losing their shows, as is Katie Phang on the weekend. And that feels worse than bad, no matter who replaces them. That feels indefensible. And I do not defend it.'

Phang, Jonathan Capehart and Ayman Mohyeldin have also been given the boot from their current timeslots by ruthless new boss Kutler.

Maddow did praise whomever would replace Reid, which is reported to be Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders Townsend and Michael Steele in the interim.

'Everybody who's going to be in anchor chairs from here on out are great colleagues and great at what they do. And you are not going to be disappointed in who's on our air and what you're going to be seeing,' she said.

News comes as leading network star criticizes management for decision to cancel shows hosted by non-white anchors

MSNBC has told the majority of the employees who produce Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid’s primetime evening news shows they are being let go as part of the network’s programming overhaul with the option to apply for new roles, according to two people directly familiar with the matter.

Maddow, the biggest star and highest-rated anchor at MSNBC, will get to keep her executive producer, Cory Gnazzo, and several other senior producers, the people said.

But the rest of Maddow’s team – along with producers who worked on the other cancelled shows, hosted by Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart, Ayman Mohyeldin and Jose Diaz-Balart – have been given the option to claim severance or reapply for new roles at the network, the people said.

The Maddow team was let go because of a quirk of how they worked on both Maddow’s show and Alex Wagner’s show, when Maddow scaled back to hosting only Mondays and Wagner hosted Tuesday to Friday.
