Live updates: Trump inauguration weekend commences as protesters rally in Washington

Inauguration festivities will begin in full force Saturday as President-elect Trump and his allies — and protesters — arrive in Washington ahead of Monday’s inauguration of the 47th president of the U.S.

Trump is expected to arrive at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, and he will later host a reception and fireworks display at his Virginia golf course. There will also be a Cabinet reception and dinner for Vice President-elect Vance at the National Gallery of Art on Saturday evening.

The D.C. People’s March, organized by several activist groups, is also slated to kick off Saturday morning across the city. It will culminate in a rally outside the Lincoln Memorial at 3 p.m., and about 50,000 people are expected to attend.

On Sunday, Trump will host a rally at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, where allies such as tech billionaire Elon Musk are expected to deliver remarks. The Village People, Kid Rock and Billy Ray Cyrus are also set to perform.

Although Saturday is expected to be balmy, Monday’s inauguration ceremony was moved inside the Capitol as freezing temperatures and a snow storm are expected to envelop Washington later in the weekend.

On a slightly drizzly day, what appear several hundred protesters have shown up to one of the kickoff points for the People’s March in Franklin Park.

Many attendees are wearing pink “bleep” hats in a nod to President-elect Trump’s infamous comments about groping women in a leaked “Access Hollywood” tape.

The atmosphere seems cheery and calm despite the weather.

Thousands of liberals march through DC ahead of Trump's inauguration

Thousands of people from around the US rallied in DC for women's reproductive rights and other causes they believe are under threat from Donald Trump.

The march reprised the original Women's March days before President-elect Trump's second inauguration.

Eight years after the first Women's March at the start of Trump's first term, protesters said they were caught off guard by Trump's victory.

They were determined to show support remained strong for women's access to abortion, for transgender people, for combating climate change and other issues.

The march is just one of several protests, rallies and vigils focused on abortion, rights, immigration rights and the Israel-Hamas war planned in advance of the inauguration on Monday.

Around the country, more than 350 similar marches are taking place in every state.

Jill Parrish of Austin, Texas, said she initially bought a plane ticket to Washington for what she expected to be Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris's inauguration.

She wound up changing the dates to march in protest ahead of Trump's swearing-in instead, saying the world should know that half of US voters didn't support Trump.

Shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration eight years ago, half a million people headed onto the streets of Washington DC to protest the new president.

Now, as Mr Trump prepares for his return to office, an attempt to repeat the event and stir up mass resistance to the Republican fell flat. One unimpressed attendee described it as “disappointingly tiny”, while another said turnout was “unfortunate”.

For an event that billed itself as the “People’s March”, not a lot of people ended up marching.

Protesters lined the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to listen to speakers who branded Mr Trump a “Nazi”, condemned the evils of colonisation, and declared that anti-Semitism had been “weaponised”.

Rapper Nelly has defended his decision to perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, calling it “an honor.” Nelly said in an often contentious interview with fellow rapper Willie D that he will be performing at the Liberty Ball on Monday out of respect for the office of the president.

“I’m not doing this for money. I’m doing this ’cause it’s an honor. I respect the office,” Nelly said. “It don’t matter who is in office. The same way that our men and women, our brothers and sisters who protect this country, have to go to war and have to put their life on the line for whoever [is] in office.”

“So, if they can put their life on the line for whoever [is] in office, I can damn sure perform for whoever [is] in office,” he added.
